NOTE
There are many MYTHS about Pioneer John Lydick and Anna Mary May! Unfortunately, the myths found their way into the histories and cost researchers plenty of time and money. However, when these are used and copied, they must be copied faithfully--errors and all.
The following myths have been debunked: 1. The tradition of a ship-board romance from Ireland , complete with her father being the captain.
2. The notion that she was called "Meary" - that came from the calligraphy of the day which ended upper case "M"s with a final loop!--Nothing more than that.
3. That they settled in the area in 1760! In 1762, John and his brother, Andrew were petitioning the Court of York Co. for Letters of Administration for the estate of their executed father, Andreas for the murder of his wife, Elizabetha in May of 1759. It took nearly 3 years for the Proprietors to decide not to make the children forfeit the property as they were left with "sundry debts" of the father.
At least the first two sons, Jacob and John were born in Littlestown and probably Patrick.....1767, 1770 and 1772
Pioneer John Lydick is first found on the petiton from Fort Shippen in 1774.
4. Gravestone birthdate of Pioneer John Lydick. The DAR, when asked for supporting documentation, came up empty-handed. They had failed to get the evidence.
The date on the stone is actually that of John's youngest brother, Joh. Jacob Lydick m. Julianna.
5. Lydick-Stuchell Myth: The Stuchell Family History states that John Stuchell arrived here in 1785 with his family from Germany! Not so.
He was married to the sister of Pioneer John Lydick, Catherine Mary Lydick.
Their first child, Mary Stuchell was b. 1770 in Littlestown, York Co., PA! The other children's birth/baptismal records have also been located in this country.
WHAT WE KNOW:
1. The parents of Pioneer John (Leidig) were Andreas & Elizabetha Leidig. This family is first found in Littlestown, York Co., PA in 1743 when they served as sponsors for a neighbor's child.
2. Andreas Leidig was a constable, road supervisor and a tax collector in Mt. Joy Township, York Co., PA.
3. In May 1759, Andreas brutally murdered his wife, Elizabetha and he was executed in June 1750. His death sentence had been reviewed and upheld with a speedy execution date asked for by the provincial government.
Dr. Charles Glatfelter, Director of the Adams County Historical Society, did a 9-page feature article about this case showing how estate records can hold a wealth of data. I received permission from him to reprint the article, "Behold, I Come Quickly," in The Lydick Connection. All of the source materials were available for publication, too.
4. Baptismal record for Pioneer John Lydick. Unless research proves otherwise, the record found in Duchess Co., New York, for a Johannes Lydig, baptized in 1739 with parents, Andreas Lydig and Elizabetha Hassalaarin (Hassler), appears to be the closest found to date that could be the same family.
Research continues... Hope this helps. Connie

> James LYDICK was a descendant of Andreas LEIDIG who was the father of John LYDICK one of the founding pioneers of Indiana County. Andreas LEIDIG was in New York....wasn't it Duchess CO. I think??? when John his son was born. So I am having trouble figuring this out then: HOW could he be one of the Lydicks settling Germantown if he was in NY instead? I am confused. Anyone has an answer to that I'd appreciate it because Andreas LEIDIG is my so many times removed Gr/Grandfather. Melissa
