1947 Mercedes Benz 170

I bought this car for $600 from another student while I was at FAU. WOW, was this car cool or what? There was a pedal, above and left of the clutch, when depressed, lubricated the entire chassis. You've got to give credit to those Mercedes engineers.

The dashboard and door sills were polished, burled wood, 3-on-the-floor transmission with a 4-cyclinder engine.

After a couple of weeks an electrical problem appeared. I could not take to the local Mercedes dealer as they were charging $20 an hour labor. I did find a repair shop in Boynton Beach which specialized in German cars and were charging $10 an hour. No-Brainer. I arrived on location and was met by a friendly, bolding, older mechanic who owned the business and seemed very interested in helping me. I also noted that he had a large back property filled with old model Mercedes, BMW and Audi.

He inspected the car, told me he knew what the problem was and quoted $250 for repairs. I agreed and picked up the car a couple of days later.

A couple of weeks later, another problem appeared. Again, I took it to the mechanic in Boynton. He looked at it and said $300 would do the job. I agreed and returned for the car three days later and paid him.

A couple of weeks later and I had the car towed to Boynton. This time the cost was $450 and left the car there - so that's how he had such a backlot full of German cars...
