KINGSPORT Volunteers with the Kingsport Animal Shelter have decorated "Santa Paws" and "Santa Claws" trees at the Kingsport Town Center.

The trees feature handcrafted ornaments, each of which includes the photograph, name and breed of a dog or cat currently available for adoption from the shelter.

The Kingsport Animal Shelter, a component of the countywide SBK Animal Control Center, is located at 2141 Idle Hour Road.

Placing the trees in the mall makes it easier to showcase for the public what dogs and cats are available — and to provide a quick way to help them in one way or another, shelter volunteer Johnnie Hennessee said.

"This way people who don't want to go in the shelter itself can come out here and see what we have available," Hennessee said.

"They can pick an animal, write down the information from the ornament, and take it to the shelt er. "

This is the second year the volunteers have set up the "Santa Paws" and "Santa Claws" trees, Hennessee said — and last year the effort helped find new homes for 30 or more animals.

But you don't have to adopt a dog or cat to help out.

In addition to full-fledged adoption of an animal, you can opt to foster an animal, or sponsor an animal through monetary or pet food donations.

You can also donate money specifically to cover the cost of someone else adopting a pet through the shelter (an $80 fee covers the cost of spaying or neutering and the dog's or cat's first round of shots, Hennessee said).

This year, event organizers are asking those who help out to leave each animal's ornament on the trees throughout the campaign, in order to give each the maximum exposure for potential new owners or sponsors.

General donations for the shelter, be it monetary or pet food, also are welcome.

Hennessee said over 80 dogs and over 100 cats were available last week.
