  • Notes
    • Here is all that I have from the report made for Foster C. Griffith in the late 1800's, by the Welsh Genealogist, Thomas Allen Griffith (some added by family members after the report was turned in) XVI. Winfrey Dan Griffith, b. abt 1792 in Spartanburg District (96), Spartanburg, SC, the fourth or fifth son of William Wells and Elizabeth Griffith. He married Margaret Rotan, daughter of William Rotan, abt 1815 or 1816. Margaret was born 1794-95 in SC.

As of this writing, primary evidence has not yet been located that definitely establishes Dan as a son of William Wells; however, significant evidence places Dan with Wells' family throughout their migration from SC to KY.

In his will, Wells leaves a portion of the family farm to his son Winfrey; however, no census, tax, probate or other records can be found for a Winfrey Griffith. Dan Griffith is listed in two of the original land grants to Wells and shows up on Christian Co., KY tax rolls in 1813 (the year he would have turned 21) immediately following the entry for Wells and again in 1816.

Dan is further linked to Wells' family by the birth of his first son, William Rotan Griffith in 1817 in KY and the fact that he named his second son Wells. It is the opinion of Lewis G. Griffith and this author ? that Dan is, in fact, the Winfrey listed in Wells' will.

Hope you can take this info and run with it.

    • Clues to the Rotan | Griffith families...

This is all I have for my Grandfather's Grandmother:

Martha Rotan Griffith married William B. Denton -1868 (?do not know where)

I did find the marriage date and a list of their children, and Martha's last name is spelled Grifatt.

William was born in Tenn., was in the Civil War, and died in Ark. So she could have been from Anywhere.

Maybe there would be hints in family names (some altered naming pattern) the couples' children...

Susie Ella*, Luther, George, Willie, Lillie, O'Dell,Sarah, Nora, Julia, Isom, James,

The only real place names I have is White co. Tenn., Sharp & Lawrence co. Ark., and Susie probably died in Des Moines ,Iowa.

I know this is a long shot, but never hurts!

      Thanks all, Good luck!
