When her husband, Tilford Passons, died in a military hospital in 1861 she was left with 12 children. Only one was married. She had 11 children at home ranging from 2 to 23 years old. She farmed to support her children. Five of her sons served in the Civil War. During the rest of her life six of her 12 children died.
