There appear to have been at least two -and possibly three- pioneer Mitchell (or Mitchel) families in the area that is now Van Buren County, Tennessee. There is the Mitchell family settled in the Big Bottom and Hickory Valley area of what is now White County -who can be traced back to 1700's Caswell County, NC; there is the Mark Mitchel family of Bone C Mountain and Rocky River (Mitchell Knob is named for this family, I believe.); and there was Jacob Mitchell -who obtained a land grant around 1808 in what is now the Cummingsville community of Van Buren County.

Can the subject William Mitchell be connected to one of those pioneer Mitchell (or mitchel) families?
