I am trying to find any info on my Gr.Gr. Grandfather, David Crockett Cantrell. He was born in 1825 in Warren County, Tennessee. I do not know much about him, and anyone related to him or his one son ( that I know of ) Leonidas Cleburn Cantrell, Please contact me. David married Margaret ( Blair ) in 1845 in Davidson County, Tennessee. I would very much like to know anything else about him, and if there might be any pictures of him anywhere. Also did he have any other children, besides my Great Grandfather Leonidas?. Thank you, Appreicate it. Donna & Paul

      25 May 2007

      Dearest Cousin David,

Thank you again so much and really appreciate all the work and time you put in to typing and sending all this info to me. Just taking a fast look over the info, I have some updated corrections Please , if there a way I could get a pic of you, since we are distantly related?

I CAN tell you right off the bat, on some corrections. My grandfather Leonidas Cleburn Cantrell, was not well known as Leonardo C..... BUT on some census that I had been sent or found over the years, listed him as either Lee C. Cantrell or L.C. Cantrell. On his wife ( Minerva Thompson ) Martin's death certificate, he is listed, as is she, as just L.C.Cantrell.
From info that I have been able to gather on them:

Minerva Thompson was born 16 October 1877 to John Thompson and Lula Mae Purdue, in Overton County Tennessee. Nothing is known about her childhood, or early adult life. All that is known is that she was married first to Ethan Etcher Tera Martin in 1895 in Tennessee. He was born in Putman County, Tennessee. Together they had one son, Van Clare Martin. Minerva's first husband died, and she later married her second husband, Leonidas Cleburn Cantrell about 1905. Minerva was recorded and listed as being a "Grass Widow" when they married. ( Info from Third Cousin and family Genealogist Charles " Tom" Cantrell )
She is listed on Leonidas's military draft registration card dated 1907 in Davidson County, Tennessee, and also on the 1910 Federal Census as living in Nashville Tennessee, Davidson County at 1629 5th Ave North, in the Civil District of Davidson County. She is then listed on the 1920 Federal Census , ( Line 42,Sheet 9A, Page, 13th Ward ) as living in Chicago Illinois, Cook County, but was dead before the 1930 Federal census. she died 12 Feb 1928 in Illinois, but her body was returned to Madison Tennessee, Davidson County. ( Info taken from Death Certificate, Dept. of Public Health, Nashville, Tennessee, File Number # 2819, Reg. Dist. Number 2190. Listed as Housewife, her husband living at the Y.M.C.A. Cause of death, 3 Tumors of cancer of Uterus. Buried at Spring Hill Cemetery, Madison Tennessee, Davidson County.

      What I have on Leonidas:
Leonidas Cleburn Cantrell was born to Parents David Crockett Cantrell and Rebecca McGinnis on 22 Sept 1878 in Davidson County, Tennessee. ( Shared info from Mrs. Rita Feltner ) He grew up on a farm, living a hard life, of doing daily farm chores.
Leonidas was a Printer by Occupation and learned the trade. In 1900, he is listed in the Federal Census, as being a " boarder" in the home of R.C. Rose, in the town of Liberty Tennessee, DeKalb County. Mr. Rose being the Publisher of the local paper in Liberty Tennessee. Leonidas Married a grass widow, Minerva " Minnie" ( Thompson ) Martin about 1905 in Tennessee. In 1910 They are recorded as living in Nashville at 1629 5th Ave, North, in the 1st civil district of Davidson County, Tennessee. Leonidas is listed as still being a printer and together at that time, had two sons, along with Minerva's 14 year old from her first marriage. By 1920, the family had moved form Tennessee to Chicago Illinois, Cook County, where Minerva died in Feb 1928. her body was returned to Tennessee where she was buried in Spring Hill Cemetery, Near Madison Tennessee, Davidson County. ( Info in paragraph given to me by third cousin and family Genealogist, Charles " Tom" Cantrell )
      ( Federal Census of 1920, Part of 1st Civil District, Davidson County, Tennessee, Line 41, Sheet 9A, EM # 2673dated 10 Jan 1920. )
( Info taken from military Registration card, Number 41-3-29C, Serial Number 353, Order Number 1128, Dated 1907. ) Leonidas was then Living at 623 3rd, Davidson County, Tennessee and listed as Carpenter being his occupation. Minerva, His wife, Minerva is listed on the card.
Leonidas Cleburn Cantrell died on 3 Feb 1946 in Chicago Illinois, Cook County. Buried at Elm Lawn Cemetery, Illinois. The grave is unmarked, and the site is located as Grave # 135, Row 4, Section 28

      Leonidas & Minerva's children:

      1) Hugh Cantrell was born August 7,1905 in Nashville Tennessee, to parents Leonidas Cleburn Cantrell & Minerva "Minnie" Thompson. Not much is known at this time about his life, but that he served in the military during WW2, with the rank of Private 1st Class in the U.S Army. He was Honorably Discharged. He then later married to Bernice ( maiden Name not known, no info on her ) He moved from Tennessee, to Chicago Illinois, Cook County, and worked for an Advertising firm. Together they had two children ( that is known ), 1) Betsy Cantrell ( no info on her ) & Audrey Cantrell ( what info is on her, is mostly hear say from Mrs. Rita Feltner, and no proof to any of her info ). He was known to be a heavy smoker and that is part of the main cause of his death. He is buried in a Cemetery out in Marquette Michigan. He is listed on the January 10, 1920 Federal Census as being age 13 years old at the time. Roll-T625_1734, Page 9A, Image 0527.

      2) Paul Cantrell was born to parents Leonidas Cleburn Cantrell and Minerva ( Thompson ) Martin on 4 February 1909 in Davidson County, Tennessee, Nashville City. He was one of three siblings born to the couple. ( info taken from Birth Certificate # 35333 State of Tennessee, Division of Vital Records ). He shows up in the 1920 Federal Census , dated 10 January 1920, listed at the age of 10, Living with his parents and siblings living in the city of Nashville Tennessee, first civil district. ( Roll- T625_1734, Page 9A, Image 0527 )
He at one point, in the late 1930's or beginning of the 1940's along with his father and two brothers, moved to Chicago, Illinois, where he met and later married his first wife, Louise Rose Steigart on or about 1930, in Chicago Illinois Cook County. They During their 13 year marriage had two sets of twins born to them.( Info remembered from Louise, when I was young ) The first set in about 1932, but were stillborn. The second set on March 15, 1934, but only one lived., Their only child, Rita Jill Cantrell, born on 15 March 1935, Chicago Illinois, Cook County.
His occupation was in Advertising. He was never in the Military service. He was a heavy smoker. He and Louise later divorced in about 1945, and he later married his second wife, Laura P. Simms. Together they had three children, 1) Laura Cantrell, 2) Judy Cantrell, 3) Paul C. Cantrell. (NOTE: info from Mrs. Rita Feltner states that They had ONLY two children together, Laura's son was from her first marriage, which Paul gave his name to. ONLY problem with THIS info is that there is no proof. Laura DID marry, but AFTER Paul had died. Info taken from the Cemetery where they are all buried ) Paul died on April 11, 1966 in Skokie, ( as stated on his death certificate # 25938, State Of Illinois, Cook County ) Illinois. He is in tombed at the Skokie Cemetery. Skokie, Illinois.
No more info is known at this time. Cause of death, Lung Cancer.

      3) Howard Cantrell was born on 7 April 1913 to Parents Leonidas Cleburn Cantrell & Wife Minerva ( Thompson ) Martin Cantrell, in Davidson County, Tennessee Near Nashville. Not much, if anything is know about his early life and childhood. At some point while growing up in Tennessee, his parents and brothers all moved from Tennessee, to Chicago ,Illinois.
Howard Cantrell enlisted into the U.S. Army during WW2, on March 14, 1941 with the rank of Private First Class, at Fort Rieley, Kansas. Also served at Camp Silbert Nebraska, Presidio San Fransisco, Fort Richardson Alaska, Fort Meyer Virginia.
Citations received during military service: Atlantic/Pacific Campaign Ribbon
      American Campaign Ribbon

After the time in service during WW2, he was honorably discharged from the service ( NOTE: info taken strictly from his Military separation paper ) on 3 March 1945, with the rank of Private First Class. He then married Clara Kathryn ( Slown ) on 29 December 1956, in Evanston Illinois. Thus far they had three children together, and all but their one daughter was adopted by Clara's second husband ( source of info: Slown family History and Family Genealogy, Page 6 or additions and Corrections to Aug 1, 1958, which states under listing of military Service, that both sons, Robert Erle Laurance, and Gregory Thomas Laurance were fathered by Howard Cantrell. The Laurance last name was her second husband's last name.
Howard was known for being a smoker and many pictures were taken of him smoking. He later died of lung cancer, due to cigarette smoking on 11 June 1968, Maywood Park Illinois. Buried at Elm Lawn Cemetery, near Arlington Cemetery, 401 east lake St., Elmhurst Illinois. 1 ( 603 ) 833-9696. Section 20, Lot 45, Grave 5.

Info on my natural Mother Mrs. Rita ( Cantrell ) Feltner:
Rita Jill (Cantrell ) Feltner was born to Parents Paul Cantrell & Louise Rose Steigart on March 15, 1934 in Cook County, Illinois. ( Birth certificate, City of Chicago, Illinois State, Cook County # 8830 Filed on March 15, 1934) The certificate states that she was born at an address and not a hospital. The address was: 1539 North Leavitt Street. The Doctor that attended was Dr. C. C. Draa, M. D.
She was the only one out of the twins that her mother, Louise had. The other twin was still born, but named Rene Cantrell. Since Louise did not want to have much to do with her, she was sent off to boarding schools for the most part. Louise and her father divorced when she was only 13 and she never saw her father again until after his death, from Lung Cancer in April 11, 1966.
She was married a total of three times in her life, thus far. Her first Husband was a Russian emigrant, Igor Zelinski whom she married on April 24, 1953. To them, a child was born, Barbara Ann Zelinski on February 20, 1954 Chicago Illinois, Cook County. The marriage was not a happy one and Rita filed for divorce with reasons being repeated cruelty. On June 29, 1956 the divorce was granted, ( Record # 54 C 15846, Circuit Court of Cook County, State of Illinois, Cook County ) and by this time, Rita was seeing a man named Robert Miller. They went out on a few Double dates, and when Rita found out she was pregnant, and after telling Robert, he spilt and left her to care for the child and raise her alone. A daughter was born through the partnership of Robert and Rita, Donna L. ( Miller) on January 10, 1957. Since Rita didn't want her second daughter to be named as Illegitimate, she gave Donna the child last name of Zelinski, so that on paper, anyway, she would have a father.
Rita then met and married Vernon Carlise Wilson, on February 28, 1959, in Chicago Illinois, Cook County. Their marriage was very rocky, and he was very physically abusive. Another daughter was born, Verna Marie Wilson, whom was born on November 10, 1960 at St. Elizabeth hospital. The abuse continued and was reported to police on march 15, 1962 and again on May 27, 1962 and Rita filed for Divorce.( Docket Number# 62 S 14514, superior Court of Cook County, State of Illinois ). Divorce was granted on November 26, 1962.
Rita put the three daughters up for legal adoption and gave them over to HER mother, Louise Rose ( Stiegart ) Bronke, and Louise's second husband, Lawrence Francis Bronke. The children were there fore also kept in the family as well. The adoption took place on October 24, 1963, and Rita's natural daughters became the adopted daughters of her mother, Louise and Lawrence Francis Bronke. Their names were also changed a bit to show that the last names of all three half sisters. Names now becoming 1) Barbara Zelinski became Barbara Ann Bronke,2) Donna ( Miller) Zelinski became Donna Louise Bronke and lastly,3) Verna Wilson became known as Doris Marie Bronke ( Adoption record, docket number # 63 Co.A 2333, The County Court of Cook County.
Rita met and then later married Robert Alvin Feltner on September 21, 1963 Cook County, state of Illinois ( record # 2715550 ). Robert A. Feltner was born on November 17, 1937 in Skuddy Kentucky. They had a child, a son. Roy Allen Feltner born on March 15, 1963 at the Illinois Masonic Hospital.
They, Rita and her third husband Robert currently live in Carpentersville Illinois, West Dundee Township, Kane County where they have resided for over 15 years. Both are retired.

Info on my Grandmother Louise Rose Stiegart Bronke:

Louise Steigart was born in Chicago Illinois on June 13,1908, to parents Rose Burzlaff, and Charles Steigart. At the time of her birth, according to her birth certificate # 81798, registered # 3104, her parents and her resided at 32rd & Musspratt St, in Chicago, Illinois. It also lists that she was the forth child born to her parents. Not much is known about her early life, but what was known within what ever family still services. She attended Catholic schools and remembers being hurt over the hands with a nuns ruler many times when she did wrong. She loved and always wanted to be an artist, and used to talk about it many times, as she grew older.
Her first marriage was to Paul Cantrell, in or around 1929, in Chicago, Illinois. There were two born,on March 15, 1934 a set of twins, one, Rita Jill Cantrell, and Renee ( whom Died) at birth . It is said that they were divorced about 1942, but at this time there is no proof as to the exact marriage or divorce date. Her daughter, Rita said that she worked for a short time at the famous Blackhawk restaurant, in Chicago, Illinois, where she retained most of her cooking skills, and later worked at Webcor, in her later life, either before or after she married her second husband, Lawrence F. Bronke on June 27,1949, ( taken from their marriage license filed in the courts, Record # B 25495) and recorded in the state of Illinois, cook county. Together, with her 2nd husband, Lawrence F. Bronke, they went to court and legally adopted her daughter Rita Cantrell's three daughters, which she had had by two former marriages of her own, and one partnership with another.
The papers( Docket # 63C A2333 of the State of Illinois, Cook County) were drafted and signed in August 29th, 1963, and finalized in October 24,1963.
Louise and her Husband, in later years, moved from their home of some 35 years at 261 Concord Dr, Melrose park, Ill, out to a condo in Hoffman estates, in 625 Huntington Commons in Mount Prospect, Illinois. Louise Died ( Info taken from her death record No# 88-013173, Registration No# 93, district 16.35) on February 6,1988 at Gottlieb Memorial Hospital, in Melrose Park, Illinois, Cook County. She is laid to rest at All Saints Cemetery, Grave 8, Lot 19, Block 108 in DesPlaines, Illinois ( info taken from Cemetery Records
NOTE: I posted info on Louise Rose Stiegart being once married to a Bryne Bowdish, form what Rita had told me over the years that we communicated, but could never find any proof that they were married. I DID find a Bryne Bowdish that was born in Chicago, but never married to Louise, he was married to another. That info was found on census records. So as for NOW, Louise was only married twice. Paul Cantrell for about 13/14 years and then to Lawrence frances Bronke for the rest of her life, over 30 years.

Info on my father ( adopted and also gradfather, from being married to Louise )

Lawrence Francis Bronke was born on January 10, 1912 to parents Leonard (Bruhuke)Bronke and Eva (Luisa Bauga) in Chicago, Illinois. At the time the family was residing at 1832 Freemont St., Chicago, Illinois and his father was that of a Motorman on the Streetcars, ( According to his Birth record # 1231 recorded in the state of Illinois, Cook County. Also there was later an amendment made to said record, which was also recorded and filed, pertaining to line 8 -9 which pertained to His mother's American name as Eva, not Luisa, which was then signed on November 28,1932. ) Not much is known as to his his childhood or schooling at this time, but it is known that he enlisted in the United States Military, in the branch of the Army on April 21,1942, with the rank of Staff Sergeant., 136th Infantry Comp I. During his time in service, he spent some time in hospitals,( information taken from Hospital Admission card, by the office of the surgeon general Department of the Army, on April 17,of the year 1944.) It states that he was 31 years of age. That he was admitted October 1943, at Ft. Lewis, Washington general, the cause being for an injury, non battle. The record later states that it was from a fall that was diagnosed as a Dislocation of his left Shoulder, which he later had to have wired, and was put in a body cast. Further down, it lists a second Stay in the hospital, due to being shot accidently by a sentry.. While in service he was awarded The Good Conduct Medal, The American Campaign Medal, The WW2 Victory Medal and the Honorable service Lapel Button . He was later Honorably Discharged on January 4,1944, ( Record # 14826 - 9 ) ( This researcher, being his adoptive daughter, has compleat file and copies of his service, and dental records, which took me almost three years to gather after his death. The reason given was from the now deformity in his left Shoulder.
After the service or sometime during, he met and later married his first wife, Florence M. Mayeux on June 24,1944 ( Marriage license # 2564 471, recorded in March 15,1948 in the State of Illinois, Cook County). During the marriage, they acquired a double lot of Property , with a Log cabin type summer home on said place located in Salem, Wisconsin. The property was mentioned in the later divorce, which took place on March 15, 1948, in Chicago, Illinois which was bought out by Lawrence, and he is said to have kept said property. The divorce was recorded on April 26, 1949 ( Record # 49-4244)Then he married Louise (Steigart) Cantrell Bowdish on June 17, 1949 in Chicago, Illinois ( Record # B 25495 of the State of Illinois, Cook County).
During their marriage they bought a home at 261 Concord Dr. Melrose Park, Illinois. They later, raised and later adopted Louise's three granddaughters. ( Adoption record 630a2333 which was filed on August 29,1963, and finalized in October 24, 1963)
He and his wife, in their later years bought a condo in Huntington Commons, in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. He died on October 19,1994 at 5:45 P.M. from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, ( Heart Attack) He is laid to rest at All Saints Cemetery, His wife lays next to him. Sorry that this is so long, but you would think, as much as I know about computers, ( having just days ago finished updating and rebuilding my own computer,) that I would know how to make an attachment and then send it as you did me. What I did, was simply go into my Genealogy program and copy and paste my notes on each one, and then paste them all in this e-mail. Right now that is the only way I know how to do it.

Again thank you for the info and hope what I sent you, corrects some of the info that was originally posted or given. At this point, I am STILL trying to get a marriage or divorce record form Chicago, but finding it hard since they they need an exact date, and can't find ( or won't take the time to ) find people by their full names. As you will notice in the notes, I only have an idea of when they were married. ( Rita told me many times, on what she thought was the year that they were married, from what she could remember, but she is 74 now, and she also had no proof as to when they were actually married )
