JESSIE EXODUS RUFFNER HUGHES
Jessie Ruffner Hughes married Lavelle Hughes. They had two children, Lynn and Anna Sue (Susan). During the depression Jessie and Lavell followed Jessie's sister's Kate and Ora and brother Charles to California. Times were very hard and later moved back to Jonesboro, Arkansas. Jessie was the bookkeeper for their business. They moved the business from Jonesboro to Blytheville where Lavelle died. Jessie was living with her son Lynn and his wife in Blytheville at the time of her death.

SUSAN'S MEMORIES:
I was 10 years old, attending the Mt. Washington School. We lived in a nice house in an area west of the Southwest Museum
in 1923 (Probably called Pasadena by now). Uncle Charles would come visit us 1924, there are some photos of us together. Mother took me to dance classes in Hollywood, we often visited Echo Park, West Lake Park and Exposition Park. Photos show me in a lovely brown organdy dress with matching hat, which mother made. We visited an Ostrich farm and I rode on one in 1923! We also partook (Lynn and I) in programs at the museum ("Bird Fantasy", held in Hollywood in1925), one of which required costumes mother made of over lapping fabric feathers. We also participated in plays at an outdoor "stage" (dug out of the side of the hill!) I was a dancer in one ("The Thief of Baghdad" 1925). I have photos of this too. Mother and I frequently rode the street car into Los Angeles to the famous Farmer's Market. She was also engaged in embroidering chiffon pillows and handkerchiefs for a company. We had an Airedale dog which I remember being taken away. I don't remember why. The bead necklace and embroidered bib I made in the third grade are still with me! Mother was extremely creative. She designed and made all of my clothes (out of men's suits, draperies, burlap, curtain material, table cloths, etc.) I had a new evening gown for every dance at Arkansas State College!
Susan also remembers her mother wring a chickens neck, then use hot water and pluck the feathers. Aunt Kate was a good cook.

A MEMORY FROM JESSIE:
Mother paid me an 1826 half dollar when I was a girl. After school was out I would work for her at her hotel for 50 cents a week. She told me when she paid it ot me "to keep it". I have all these years!. (there is no further information as to what the name of the hotel was, but presume it to be in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas).
