      Evan "Jack" Watkins moved to St. Clair County in 1819. He lived just west of Hopewell Church, where the D.A.R.School was situated. He and his sons, Jack, Evan, and Phil, were all great lover of fine horses, and sports. They were also great hands to joke and have a good time.

      A will for Evan "Jack" Watkins can be found at the St. Clair County Archives in Ashville, Alabama (Deed Book "B", pg 668, written 17 May 1834, filed 21 Sep 1840). The will was witnessed by John F. Dill, Lorenzo Whisenant, and Nancy Dill, wife of John F. Dill. (Some research says Harry/Hebry Dill also witnessed the will.) In the will Evan leaves his estate to his "wife, Polly". He mentions all 10 of his children by name. At the time the will was written, all four of his daughters were married and are listed by their married surnames, rather than Watkins.

      The 1800 Census for Marlboro County, South Carolina shows the following for the Evan Watkins household: 1 white male, 0-10; 1 white male, 16-26, 1 white female 16-26, and 3 slaves.

      The 1810 Census for Rutherford County, North Carolina lists an Evan Wadkins (incorrectly spelled surname).

      The 1820 Census for St. Clair County, Alabama lists Evan Watkins (white male 21+) as head of household. In the household are 6 white males under 21, , 1 white female 21+, and 2 white females under 21.

      The 1830 Census for St. Clair County, Alabama lists Evan Watkins (white male 60-70) as head of household. Also in the household are 3 white males 15-20, 2 white male 20-30, and 1 white female 50-60).

      Other Watkins in the St. Clair County 1830 Census include Lewis Watkins, and Willis Watkins. Also, there is documentation for the marriage of an Evan Watkins and Sarah Berry on 29 Jan 1824 in St. Clair County, Alabama. Sarah Berry's father was Armstead Berry, and her guardian was Moses Harri

    • The attachment is Evan Watkins' Last Will and Testament recorded 09 Nov 1840. I attempted to transcribe the will. A couple of things don't make much sense, but it's the best I can do for now. For some reason the spacing for the bottom part will not cooperate with me. I'm sure you can retype it to suit your needs. I have been able to figure out a good way to send you my connection to Mary Ann "Polly" Dill Watkins. If I don't get that to you today, I will send it soon.

      I, Evan Watkins, of St. Clair County State of Alabama, contious (maybe meant to be conscious) of the uncertainty of human life, and not willing to die intestate do now in the full possession of my faculties make this my last Will and Testament. I do hereby will and bequeath to my loving wife, Polly Watkins, all my real estate during of her natural life consisting of land and house where I now live, also one horse and two cows and all the house hold furniture and at her death to be divided between my five sons John Watkins, Philip Watkins, Evan Watkins, Jr., Bennet Watkins, and Green Berry Watkins viz the land at her death to be divided between my said sons as they may agree on and at the death of said wife, John Watkins, Philip Watkins, Evan Watkins, Jr., Bennett Watkins and Green Berry Watkins is to pay my son Willis Watkins each one severally of them the sum of twenty dollars which is to be his part of said land. I do further will and bequeath to my four daughters Rebecca Philips, Patsy Wesson, Frances Wesson, and Susannah Humphrey all my personal property and moveable effects to be sold and the money equally divided among my said daughters, at my death it is further my will and desire that my said wife, at or before her death, to give or dispose of all house hold and perishable property as she may think proper.

      I do hereby nominate and appoint my two sons my executors viz Philips Watkins and Evan Watkins, Jr. of this my last will and testament. I testamony (unsure if "testamony" is correct ) of the a will and testament I have set my hand and affix my seal this the 17 day of May 1834.

      day of Sept 1840.
