Biography
When Thomas1 Gaskins (c.1601–1665) claimed a headright for transporting his daughter Elitia, she was recorded as Mary Gaskins. 'Mary' doesn't appear to be a clerical error, but it's not clear why she used two names. The name 'Elitia' is very unusual and is considered to have originated in America. It's possible the first person to use it was this Elitia (Gaskins) Mayes. Amongst the descendants of Thomas1 Gaskins, the immigrant, it appears at least three more times. The name appears with many variant spellings like Elesha, Elisha and Elisher, but spellings like Eliza and Alicia appear to be modern mistranscriptions.
Elitia was born say 1630. She married Lieut. Col. Henry Mayes say 1651. Administration of her estate was granted at Northumberland County, Virginia 19 Aug 1708.
