  • Notes
    • The Dr. Eli P. Hawthorne Cemetery is located near Maggart. Turn off Maggart Road on Bush Hollow Road and continue for four-tenths mile then walk down the dirt trail going towards Cordell Hull Lake for approx. 75 yards then go to the left for 40 yards thru the woods. The area is covered with the cemetery ground cover called periwinkle. The very large stone is down. Located on Corp. of Engineers property.

Note: Dr. Eli Hawthorne's family state that both he and his horse were drown in a flash flood in 1885. He was a civil war veteran serving as Surgeon for the 28th Tennessee Inf. CSA. He was married to Isabella A. High daughter of Winston and Margaret High.

Above info is from Smith County Cemetery online records. Copied by Retta Waggoner, July 23, 2003; Listed in Smith County Tennessee Cemeteries - South of the Cumberland River page 226. Thanks to John Waggoner for photo.

It is also noted that Dr. Hawthorne's wife Isabelle is listed on the stone as "I.A. Hawthorne, 8 Nov 1831" but there is no death date. Further research located a death certificate for her which states she died on 9 Sep 1925 in Nashville, Davidson Co., TN and was buried in Watertown, TN. [2]
