      Cornett Family History

It is believed by some that the Cornett family is descended from King Canutte II of Denmark. King Canutte II of Denmark "Canute the Great" (995-1035). He was the first Danish King of England. Under his rule Norway was conquered. He was the son of Sweyn, King of Denmark. On the other hand, if the Cornetts were of French origin, as others researchers believe, it is likely that the family came across the English Channel with William the Conqueror - see separate story on the meaning and origins of the name Cornett by Dr. D.D. McTavish..

Erin Cornett was born in 1676 in Northumberland, England; he raised sheep. There is no record of his wife's name. Some researchers claim that Erin Cornett was the son of William Carnute, born 1606 in Trinity, England. He supposedly graduated from Cambridge University in 1626. His college application says his ancestors came from Denmark with the Vikings when they invaded England in 1029. William would have been 70 years old when Erin was born..

Erin's son, Earl John Cornett , was born in Southampton, England in 1696. He was a farmer and a member of the Church of England. He had seven sons: John, Roger, George, Francis, Frank, Jesse, and James. John Cornett ...born in Southampton ,England in 1727. In 1740, he sailed to the Colonies with six of his brothers. They worked as indentured servants on an English lord's farm near Philadelphia, Pa. After gaining his freedom, John went to Henrico, County, Virginia (near Richmond) and raised tobacco for a living. He was taxed for land there on March 24,1747... His will lists that he had six sons and no daughters. His second wife was Elizabeth Bacon Mosby. She was a widow with one son... John died about 1776 at Elks Creek, Va. He was a member of St. John Episcopal Church. Four of his sons fought in the Revolutionary War (another source says six2). These four were later given land grants for their war service.William and Sam settled on Line Fork... Nathaniel and Roger settled in Benge, Clay Co.4 "[He] died about 1776 in Elm Creek, Virginia... his children were Rebecca Canute Cornett; David Cornett, born about 1750; James Canute Cornett, born about 1755; John Samuel Cornett, born about 1759; Nathanial Cornett born about 1760; William Jesse Cornett, born in 1761 in Henrico County, Virginia; and Roger Cornett, born about 1768..[8][9][10]

      About Earl Cornett, the Immigrant
      Additional Curator's Notes:

"Earl" was not commonly used as a given name in the 1600's. The use here is based on family websites. No documents have turned up to prove or disprove the name. I have seen the surname Canute used by one researcher, but most use the Cornett name.

Family lore also has it that his father was named Erin Canute, and that he was a sheepherder from Northumberland, England. "Erin" was also not commonly used as a given name. It is more likely that his name was Aaron. The story says that the family is descended from Danish King Canute. A few researchers believe that Erin/Aaron also emigrated to America, bringing with him the Canute coat of arms. Sheepherders are not generally granted a coat of arms. From what I can tell, the Cornett family, while prosperous in America, gave no inkling of a royal descent.

Where no documents are found, I am noting that items are "family lore." Where documents can be found, they will be attached as sources or discussed on the overview tab.

      *****************
According to family lore, Earl Cornett was the first of his name to come to the New World. He was born in England, but the dates given for his birth vary widely among researchers, but was probably about 1696. He died c.1788 in either Virginia or Pennsylvania, but most likely in Henrico County, Virginia. He had seven sons.

Son John was born in Virginia in 1726, which places Earl's emigration prior to that date.

Sources say that either married Ann Canute/Cornett, daughter of William Canute/Cornett, or that he married Elizabeth Mosley. No records have been found for either marriage. The more probable wife is Ann, daughter of William. This would have been a cousin marriage. It took place in England c. 1723, prior to emigration to America.

      Children of Earl Cornett/Canute:

John L. Sr. Cornett was born on 2 May 1724/1727. He died about 1776.
James C. Cornett was born in 1729. He died in 1796/1797.
George Canute was born about 1732. He died in 1776.
Francis Canute was born about 1734.
Franklin Canute was born about 1735.
William Jesse Canute was born about 1737.
Roger Canute was born about 1739. He died in 1817 in Clay County,Kentucky.
