      by son, Charles Winfield Lee

As Charles talks about the remembrances of his father, the first thing that comes into his mind is that his father had a very important position with Jefferson County. He was one of the Jefferson County Court Auditors. Charles remembers going to work with his father and sitting on the bench in Judge Abernathy's courtroom. Also, remembers traveling with his father to Montgomery and Tuscaloosa at various times. The automobile was a county car and he remembered that they were yellow.

Charles Vernon Lee was in World War I as a 2nd Lt. While he was posted in Houston, Texas, he had to ride around on a motorcycle with a side car. He had to protect government equipment and while riding around so much out in the cold weather, he never got over that cold feeling years after the war.

Around 1936 or 1937 when the state was in the processing of electing a new Governor, Charles Vernon fell in with supporters and was promised a state job of auditor. The nominee was Frank Dixon. He was elected Governor but he chose another fellow as state auditor. Since Charles Vernon had been working for this governor, he had fell away from others that he worked with at the county level, thus he lost his job as Jefferson County Auditor. After this debacle, he went to work for a short time with a bakery where he was employed as a bookkeeper. His bookkeeping skills was learned from his father, Lafayette Winfield Lee.

Charles Vernon took on lots of odd income tax jobs for people and some other odd jobs in bookkeeping until he retired when he was 65 years old and able to get his social security.

In 1939, unbeknownst to Charles Winfield, his mother and father separated. They had not talked about this but that summer, Mildred Louise took Charlie and took a trip on the train out to Dallas, Texas and Holdenville, Oklahoma to visit relatives. They stayed the whole summer and Charlie got to know his grandfather, Dick Hennessey and other Vick relatives that lived in Texas and in Oklahoma. When they returned home, his father had packed up and moved to live with his mother, Frances Massey Lee. Nothing was every mentioned about a divorce and it is believed that they continued to be married, just living in separate houses. Charles Winfield was always close to his father. Mildred Lucille HENNESEY and Charles Vernon LEE had the following children:
