Some men told too late that they are fathers

I respond to a recent Forum page column by Molly Ivins headlined, "Unmarried fathers should pay heavily for their irresponsibility." The ideas that Ivins give do not apply to every man who gets a woman pregnant. It is not the man's fault if the woman does not tell him that she is expecting. I know that there are plenty of women getting welfare for children whose fathers are not around or are not paying support for their children. But what about the men who are not informed that they are fathers and have children?
Last year, my husband went through a paternity suit for him to pay support for a child he didn't even know existed. The mother failed to tell him that she was pregnant. When he found out, she told him he was not the father. When she decided he was the father, eight years later, she had papers drawn up to make him pay support. The deoxyribonucleic acid tests proved the child was his; now he pays for a child he doesn't know.

It is the woman's place to tell the man that she is pregnant - not wait eight years to decide to tell him that he is a father and that she wants him to pay now. Also, there should be a statute of limitations on how long the mother of a child can wait before she decides to sue for child support on the alleged father. I believe eight years is too long to wait. My husband pays for a child he doesn't know and can't visit by court order.
