Josiah PRATER (b about 1804 NC, d before 1878) married Sarah Elizabeth HARPOOL (b about 1804, d before 1870 TN). Josiah is the son of Archelus Archibald Prater (b1766 MD or SC, d1854 SC) and Mary Rosann LENTZ (b about 1771, d1849 NC).
Well, I have some new information from a tape I made of my grandmother telling me about her family history. This tape was made in the mid-60s and grandma was 95 years young and sharp. Any way she told me that when her grandfather (Josiah PRATER) died, his wife remarried to a HOLLOWAY. Does anyone have any information on this second marriage???

Archelaus Prater is my Great-Great-Great-Grandfather. I link to him through his youngest son Benjamin Prater born 1819.

Goodspeed Histories of Cannon, Coffee, DeKalb, Warren, White Counties of Tennessee (reprint from 1887 edition) lists “Archibald” Prater and Allen Youngblood among the first settlers of the eleventh district of Warren County, TN. The article states he arrived there sometime before 1810. At that time, the eastern half of Cannon County was part of Warren County and would be in Warren County until Cannon County was formed in 1836.

Allen Youngblood’s father was Jonathan Youngblood. Warren County land records show Jonathan Youngblood was residing there as early as Sept 29, 1809. Jonathan was in the 1811 Warren County Tax Lists. Land records indicate Jonathan Youngblood held land holdings on Miller Branch in Warren County. From census records, Jonathan was born in North Carolina but Allen was born in Georgia. I have no research of the exact location of where they were before they settled in Warren County, Tennessee.

Archelaus Prater started his family in South Carolina about 1790. He moved with his wife’s family to Buncombe County, NC., between 1798-1900. You’ll find him in Buncombe Co., NC., census in 1800. They lived near Asheville near his wife’s Lance family. His wife was Rosanna Lance.

Archelaus sold his farm land in North Carolina February 18, 1807. The deed was witnessed by “Bazzel” Prather. I suspect this was his brother Basil King Prather/Prater because Basil married into the same Lance family that Archelaus married into. Archelaus married Rosanna Lance daughter of Peter Lentz(Lance).

Archelaus’ brother Basil also married a Rosanna Lance. Basil’s wife Rosanna was the daughter of Samuel Lance – he was the brother of Archelaus’ wife Rosanna. Basil married about 1807 and he and Rosanna’s first child was born July, 1808, but I do not know where. A second child Elijah was born 19 July 1810 in Tennessee. On February 27, 1815, “Bazel” Prather and Jas. Lance witnessed Archelaus’ first land holdings in Warren County when Archelaus bought 18 acres of land in Warren County (a location which would become Cannon County when Cannon was formed in 1836).

This James Lance who also witnessed the 18-acre land purchase by Archelaus was James Jasper Lance – the husband of Archelaus and Basil’s sister Mary Prather Lance who also married into the North Carolina Lance families.

Your Allen Youngblood was in the War of 1812: Tennesseans In The War of 1812 (Sistler)Pg 547. Allen Youngblood, Pvt, Capt Wm Douglas, Infantry.

Allen applied for soldier's pension for service in the War of 1812 on 3 July 1871: Declaration of Surviving Soldier For Pension (Act of February 14, 1871) State of Tennessee Warren County. On this 3d day of July, A.D. one thousand eight hundred and seventy one, personally appeared before me J. H. Robinson Clerk of the Warren County Court a court of record within and for the County and State aforesaid Allen Youngblood aged 77 years, a resident of county of Warren and State of Tennessee, who being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is married; that his wife's name was Verlina Prater to whom he was married on Stones River on the 11th day of February 1820; that he served the full period of sixty days in the Military services of the United States in the war of 1812; that he is the identical Allen Youngblood who was drafted in Captain Wm Douglas Company in the State of Tennessee and was honorably discharged at Fayetteville Tenn May 1814; that Claimant was not in any engagement and was stationed at Fort Williams in Alabama; . . . that his post office is at Clearmont, County of Warren, State of Tennessee, and his domicil or place of abode is at Clearmont about eleven miles from McMinnville, Warren Co., Tennessee. Signed Allen Youngblood.

This Verlinne Prater was the daughter of Archelaus and Rosanna Lance Prater. In 1820, her father Archelaus was living on Parchcorn Creek – a creek which empties into the East Fork of Stones River in present Cannon County. Archelaus was a Minister of the Gospel. Records of early Warren County marriages were lost in a fire in the Warren County Courthouse. Archelaus married his son Benjamin in 1839 in Cannon County so it is possible that he married his daughter Verlinne and Allen Youngblood.

In the book "Tennessee Postoffices and Postmaster Appointments 1789-1846" Page 189: Samuel Edmondson was Postmaster of Clearmont Post Office in Cannon County 29 May 1841. The post office was transferred to Warren County 28 May 1846. Allen Youngblood was appointed Postmaster of the Clearmont Post Office in Warren County 28 May 1846. The Clearmont Post Office in Warren County was discontinued 20 Feb 1867.

Originally part of Cannon County, TN, the small town of Clearmont, near "Youngblood Creek" was established in 1841. According to Robert L. Mason's "McMinnville as a Milestone 1810-1960", Clearmont then became part of Cannon County. However, in 1846 Clearmont again appeared in Warren County with Allen Youngblood as Postmaster. The post office closed in February of 1867 to be later reopened. The post office was permanently closed in 1907.

I can point out some landmarks for where these families lived and where some of them are buried but I can’t insert a map in this email. I’ll have to ask you to create the map. If you would go to

< http://www.mapquest.com/ > and request a map for Clearmont, TN you can follow along the map and see where these landmarks are.

When you get the map on your screen, you’ll see “Clearmont” with a star in the middle of the map. Expand the map until it gets large enough to be able to read the road names and the creek names. When you get there, move your pointer about half-way between the star and the upper right hand corner of the map and click the mouse at that point. Then print a copy of the map and you can follow these landmarks on the map. If you haven't used Mapquest before and need some help, email me and I'll send more info.

Archelaus Prater sold his first land holdings in (what is now) Cannon County in 1828. That location is off this map to the northwest. He moved down on Bullpen Creek (it’s a blue line running through Clearmont) in the 1830s and acquired 315 acres of land and built a grist mill and large mill dwelling house right on Bullpen Creek right inside the Warren/Cannon County line.

There’s no more village or post office at Clearmont. It’s all farm land now. That’s where Allen Youngblood was postmaster for several years.

Go north from Clearmont up to Scott Road and go to the right to Ivy Bluff Trail (Ivy Bluff Road now). Go north along Ivy Bluff Road up to where a faint blue line crosses the road. That’s Youngblood Creek. Follow Ivy Bluff Road to where the road takes a sharp turn to the right (to the east). Right where the road takes that sharp turn to the right and just across the creek to the left of that right turn is a cemetery. That’s Ivy Bluff Cemetery and that’s where some of your people are buried. James Jasper Lance donated the land for the cemetery in 1846. The cemetery was on his land at the time. That’s where James Jasper Lance and his first wife Mary Prather Lance (sister of Archelaus) is buried along with James Lance and his second wife Margaret Youngblood (sister of Allen Youngblood).

Now go on up north to the town of Devenport on Highway 70S. Turn right on Hwy 70S. If you went straight ahead you would be on Prater Town Road and that winds on up to the north and you can go over to the old town of Prater in Cannon County that way.

Go to the east (actually southeast) on Highway 70S until you see the Dixie Hale Road (on your left) and you’ll see another faint blue line crossing the road. That’s Miller Branch where Jonathan Youngblood had his 1809 land holdings. Right after where the road crosses Miller Branch is a sweeping but slight turn to the left. Right there to the left is a small sign “Youngblood Cemetery.” It’s a small road that is not on the map. Last time I was by there the gate was locked but somebody back there will know who owns the gate. In Tennessee, land owners have to let you in to visit a cemetery.

On the map, if you look from where the cemetery is down to the southwest to Clearmont, that’s the area where Jonathan, Allen, and Josiah Youngblood, and Mary Prather Lance and Mary’s brother Archelaus Prater lived.

Archelaus’ other brother Basil King Prater lived to the south of Archelaus about 5 miles. The place he lived isn’t on the map. His first Rosanna died about 1827-1828 and he married again and his family and second wife moved to Fayette County, IL where he died in 1835.

I’ve been to the Youngblood cemetery several times back when the gate wasn’t locked and have looked for headstones with names on them. The Warren County Historian runs an insurance office in McMinnville. His name is James Dillon and he has an office right downtown across the street from the courthouse. He runs Dillon Insurance Agency. He told me once that he believed that old Jonathan Youngblood and Archelaus Prater were buried in that old cemetery. I can’t prove it or can’t disprove it.

Jonathan Youngblood and Archelaus were living right next to each other at the time of the 1850 census. They were in adjacent dwellings which means that their houses were close to each other. Jonathan Youngblood died in 1852. Archelaus Prater died in 1854. Between the two families there was more than one marriage. My GGreat-grandfather’s daughter Sarah Prater married Allen Youngblood’s grandson Houston Monroe Youngblood. He was in the Civil War and after the war they moved to Missouri then to Arkansas and died there. Some of their descendants are still here in northeast Oklahoma.

I hope all of this helps. It’s a bunch of information.

You had asked if Archelaus Prater had a son Archibald. I’ve not found a son by that name. His oldest son was John born 1794. He had another son born between 1790-1800 and we don’t know who he is. He had three daughters born between 1790-1800 and we don’t know who any of them are.

His next child was Verlinne born about 1802 in NC and she married your Allen Youngblood.

His next child was Josiah Prater born about 1802-1803 in NC. He may have been a twin of Verlinne but I can't prove that.

His next child was Joseph Prater born 1804 in NC.

The next child was Martin L. Prater and he was born 1808 in Tennessee. Martin was the first child to be born in Tennessee. All the rest were born in TN.

The next child was Susannah born 1811

The next child was Kessiah born 1812-1816

The next child was Thomas born 1817

The next and last child was Benjamin born 1819. He’s my ancestor.

      Bob Prater, Tulsa, Oklahoma
