- Life and Influence of Alice (nee Johnson) Graham By: Brenda Rowland Clark
Alice “Allie” Elizabeth (nee Johnson) Graham, daughter of Dudley Alonzo Johnson and Emiline (nee Styles) Johnson, was born June 6, 1877 in North Carolina. According to Mary Graham Love, Allie Johnson Graham's mother, Emiline Styles Johnson, is full blood German which would mean Allie Johnson Graham is half German. Mary Graham Love stated that Allie's mother, Emiline Styles Johnson, was physically a large woman. Allie's father, Dudley Alonzo Johnson is a descendant of Old Hop Hopper through his Raper, McDaniel, Hopper lineage. Old Hop Hopper Kana Gatoga “Standing Turkey” was a Cherokee Chief in Chota, near the Little Tennessee River at Cherokee Nation East. Alice Johnson Henson is registered on the Dawes roll as #22024. Her Cherokee blood quantum is listed as 1/32, card number 9799. At some point during the US Government's removal of indians from CNE (Cherokee Nation East), Allie Johnson and family moved to Arkansas and/or Oklahoma. She was also listed on the Miller Roll #13879.
Allie's father, Dudley Alonzo Johnson, died at an early age in 1885 when Allie was around 6 or 7 years of age. Allie's mother and father were separated before Dudley A. Johnson expired. Although Allie did maintain some contact with the extended Johnson family, we have little information about the Johnson/Raper/McDaniel family, other than what is documented in historical records. According to Mary Graham , Dudley Alonzo Johnson is buried in Stillwell, Oklahoma (he died with TB). Therefore, the Johnson family must have been living or visiting in or around Oklahoma in 1885. Allie's mother, Emiline Styles Johnson, remarried. She married a man with the last name Ingram/Ingraham, first name unknown.
Allie's mother remarried two additional times, once to William Pettit and additionally to a man named Neel/Neal unknown first name. William and Emiline Pettit had two children: Nancy “Nannie” Ann Pettit, born in 1882 and Rosa “Rosie” Pettit, born in 1886. Allie had two half- sisters; however, Rosa Pettit died as a child. Rosie Pettit is buried at the Cherokee National Cemetery in Ft. Gibson, Oklahoma. Rosa's Find a Grave Memorial is #23403714 and may be found at <http://www.findagrave.com> . Allie and her sister Nannie (nee Pettit) Stanley were close as siblings. According to Mary Graham Love, Nannie Pettit Stanley looked like her mother, Emiline Styles Johnson Pettit.
Alice Johnson Graham attended the Cherokee Female Seminary in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Allie was also the cook for the Female Seminary. Allie learned the art of cooking and was known as an excellent cook. She was also well educated. According to the document Cherokee Lineages, Alice Johnson married Andrew J. Henson before 1906. It was a brief marriage. According to History of the Cherokee Indians Their Legends and Folklore, Allie Johnson graduated from the Female Seminary in 1907. Mary Graham Love stated that her mother, Alice Johnson Graham, was a professional cook and a school teacher.
Alice Johnson Henson married Augustus “Gus” Washington Graham on November 7, 1908 in Crawford, Arkansas. Gus and Allie Graham had two children: Mary Emma Graham born 12/28/1911, and Nannie B. Graham born 09/10/1914. Their daughter Nannie was named after Allie's sister Nannie Pettit. They reared their two girls in Claremore, Rogers County, Oklahoma. Allie's daughter Nannie married Ransom Gullett and died, in 1932, of an ether overdose during the birth of their son Donald Gullett. The death of their daughter Nannie was tragic for Alice and Gus Graham. After the death of Nannie Graham Gullett, Alice and Gus reared her son Donald Gullett.
Alice and Gus moved to Ft. Gibson then later to Muskogee, Oklahoma. They lived near their daughter, Mary Graham Love, and her husband Clyde Love. They had several grandchildren: Donald Gullett, Beatrice Love Rowland, Mary Love Hardman, Barbara Love Crowder, and Dewey Love. Gus always raised a large garden of fresh vegetables, while Allie used her talent to cook the fresh vegetables. Even though Alice Johnson Graham was a good cook, she was petite physically, and therefore was called “little granny”. Beatrice Love Rowland stated she can remember her grandmother as an excellent cook. According to Bea, Allie Graham was known for her dumplings, pies and cobblers. Alice passed many of her cooking secrets and family recipes to her daughter Mary Graham Love who in turn passed the recipes to her children and grandchildren. Allie produced a family heritage of great cooking, especially in making pie dough to produce excellent cobblers and pies. The Graham's love for fresh vegetables and Allie's art of cooking fresh vegetables was in turn passed to her children and grandchildren.
Allie lived a relatively healthy life. However, at the age of 79, she contracted pneumonia and died in 1956 in Muskogee, Oklahoma. She is buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in Claremore, Oklahoma. Allie's Find a Grave Memorial is #32039434 and may be found at <http://www.findagrave.com> . [1]
