Do you have further info on the Amherst County, Va Wilchers which you could share with me? I have come across references to Charles and John W. Wilcher being sons of Joseph and Barbara Wilcher of Amherst Co, Va (late 1700s time period). There was also a Thomas Wilcher who may fit as another relative. Thomas Wilcher, formerly of Amherst co, Va, is listed in land records of Burke co, Nc along with Charles Wilcher. This same Thomas had issue who removed to Warren and Cannon Counties, Tennessee.

I would appreciate any details you might have on any Amherst co, Va Wilcher family, which might help me verify or add to the limited Wilcher info I have...

Have recently received info that Thomas Wilcher, d. 8 Aug 1816 in Warren County, TN has been certified as a Revolutionary soldier. Have a little more info if anyone is interested.

"1409. THOMAS WELSHER 100 A. on No. side of Catawba River, on a conditional line between Welsher & Alexander Erwin, adj. McKenny. Ent. 31 Oct. 1779, #1020. CB: Micajah Sansom & Benj. Harris. Grant issued 16 Nov. 1790. [Warrant for survey mentions John Deals line and the Improvements made by Thomas Day.]"

Early Wilchers...

The name is spelled Welcher, Whelchel, Wilsher, Wilshire, Wicher, Willshire, Whiltshire, Wilsure, Wilkshire in various early VA and NC records. In 1654 John Wiltshire is listed as a Virginia immigrant, and in 1679 several of the Wilsheir family immigrated from Barbados. There was a Thomas Wiltshire in Northampton country, VA in 1672 and in the Isle of Wight Country in 1682. By the mid 1700's Thomas, Dorcas, and Joseph Wilshire are in Caroline County, VA. John Weltshire was in Augusta County, VA in 1762 and David Whiticher is there in 1769.

The name seems without doubt Wiltshire, at first, and shows an English origin - becoming Wilcher in both English and pioneer usage, until Wilcher became generally adopted. Thomas, of Warrant County, signs himself "Thomas Wiltshire" on several county records, one of them among the last he signed, in 1816 - the year of his death. (Copied from "The History and Genealogy of some pioneer Norther Alabama Families" by Mary N. Gibson - Brittain, Marie Brittain Craig, and Marjorie Craig Churchill.)

Research on the surname "Wilcher" shows it to be a variation on the name "Wiltshire," a county in SW England. About 90% of all people with that name 200-300 years ago came from there. Wilshire, England, is probably where the American Wilchers came from.

The vast majority of the Wilchers (or other spellings) who came to the New World in the 1600s and 1700s came as indentured servants, usually as an alternative to other punishment for petty offenses.

The first Wilcher in America showed up in Virginia in 1635 as an indentured servant. Over the next 150 years a couple dozen others showed up in various places: Maryland, Pennsylvania, and the Bahamas.

About ¾ of the Wilchers came to Virginia in the 1600s and 1700s.

One of these early Virginia indentured servants was likely the progenitor of the Wilchers in Amherst-Bedford.

The earliest records of Thomas Wilcher, Sr. are in Amherst County, Virginia and were two court cases which were started in Dec 1767 against Thomas Wilcher for slander decided in Wilcher's favor. The other was for trespass and assault, but it was dismissed by the plaintiffs. He was probably born in the 1740s in Virginia. A good assumption might be that he was about 21 years old when the court order on road work was issued on 2 Jun 1766. Thus, he might have been born about 1745.

On 5 Feb 1776 he was appointed as 1 of 4 appraisers for a personal estate in Amherst County, VA. During the 1770s in Amherst County no court cases could be found. He did buy and sell land with the purchase of 174 acres on 16 Apr 1770 of part of tract which had been conveyed by Peyton Randolph and Lusford Lomax, Jr. to Philip Grymes.In 1770 he bought 150 acres which he and his wife Anne sold on 13 Feb 1779. He bought 200 acres in Amherst County on 2 Jan 1785. On 7 May 1787 he sold 481 acres in Amherst County. Thomas Wilcher Sr and his wife Anne sold 681 of his 855 acres in 1787 and 1788. He and Anne sold 81 acres on 2 Jul 1787. On 4 Nov 1788 they sold 600 acres. He also sold 200 acres on the south side of Berry's Mountain which he had bought in Oct 1785. Also on 4 Nov 1788 Thomas Wilcher and Anne sold 400 acres on both sides of Harris Creek.

In May 1787 he served on the Amherst County Court grand jury. The court orders of the late 1780s and early 1790s show that Thomas Wilcher was the defendant in two suits and was the plaintiff in six suits. None of these appear to be overly significant. There were other suits for amounts of about $100 or less, some of which were ruled in Wilcher's favor, and others dismissed. A case in court in May 1791 mentioned that Thomas Wilcher was "not a resident of Amherst County." In an Aug 1789 case it was state that "it appearing to the court that the said Thomas Wilcher hath removed to the State of North Carolina . . "

He died in 1816 so he would have been about 71 years old at the time of his death. He moved to Burke County, NC in 1789, and to Warren County, TN in 1807.

Thomas Wilcher, Sr purchased land on John's River in Burke County, NC as early as 1778. He moved there from Amherst Country, Virginia in 1789 (the suit against David Tinsley proves that Thomas Wilcher moved from Amherst County, VA, to North Carolina prior to Aug 1789).

Thomas Wilcher's wife is thought by most Wilcher researchers to be Anne Walton.

William Walton, Sr., was a Revolutionary Soldier, born 1735 in Virginia, son of William and Susannah Walton who were in Amherst County, VA by 1761 and in Burke County, NC 1792.

Thomas Walton purchased 600 acres at the mouth of John's River from Thomas Welcher (later a plantation belonging to Colonel John Sudderth).

Thomas Welcher's land in Burke Co., NC was granted to him by the State of North Carolina (copied from Burke: The History of a North Carolina County, 1777-1920). Thomas Welcher and William White were overseers of John's River in 1796.

Patrick Hennessey lived on the south side of John's River. After Thomas Wilcher Sr's death it was conveyed in 1818 by "Joseph England, Thomas Wilcher, Jr. and Benjamin Wooten, all of Warren County, TN to William Erwin of Burke County, NC" ... "tract adjoining the lands of John and Samuel Franklin, William Erwin and the children of William Walton",. This was a tract of land granted to Thomas Wilcher Sr. in 1799 by the State of North Carolina. This deed is recorded in Deed Book C, Warren County, TN.

Thomas Wilcher Sr moved to Warren County in 1807 (actually was White County that became Warren County about 1817-1820) from Burke County, NC. His business life is very well documented with many legal proceedings, including land deals and various disagreements with associates (see Moses Park reference). On 4 Dec 1807 he was 1 of 12 men appointed or commissioned as Justice of the Peace by the Tennessee General Assembly as part of the first County Court of Warren County [McMinnville at a Milestone 1810-1960 in the Birmingham Public Library written by the Southern Standard in McMinnville].

Thomas Wilcher Sr first arrived in White County in 1807, part of which became Warren County in late 1807. About 1807, Thomas Wilcher assignee of three Revolutionary War Soldiers, Martin Armstrong, John Nelson and Grady Byinham, entered a part of the land called for in the warrant of each. This was land extending south from the Barron Fork river to beyond present day Liberty Lane. Wilcher built a two-story brick home sometime after 1807, a portion of which exists recently as the home of Dr. B.C. Smoot. Thomas Wilcher Sr. died in this house. His earliest land grant records were in Aug 1808 in White County. There were six in the amount of 75 to 240 acres. He had 4 land grants for land in Warren Country of 33 to 125 acres on 24 Aug 1808. There were numerous other land related transactions. It is noted in the Warren County, TN marriage records prior to 1852 and court records prior to 1848 were lost or destroyed leaving quite a void for researchers.

When Warren County was organized in 1807, according to the laws of the State, a temporary log house and jail were erected near the center of the county, where the courts were to be held until the citizens of the county should elect commissioners who were to select a proper place for a permanent county seat. In 1808 a small log courthouse was built on top of a high hill, near a big spring just above the Barron Fork - at the towns southeast fording place - and where the Looney's Trace then crossed the river. From 1808 until sometime in 1811, circuit court was well as the other courts, met in the little log house twice a year at which time other lawyers from other towns with the circuit attended.

From Laughlin's "Reminiscences of McMinnville "as it was in 1811, he says "On occasions when the courts met in the log court house across the river, the judges and lawyers boarded about in the neighborhood as best they could. Most of them stayed in the home of Thomas Wilcher Sr. - two miles from the place of holding the court. After the death of Mr. Wilcher in 1816, the late Joshua Coffee occupied the house until his death in 1842 (Mr. Coffee didn't occupy the house until after Mrs. Wilcher's death).

There will be sold to the highest bidder, at the late dwelling-house of Thos. Welcher [Wilcher], deceased, on the first of January next, the following property belonging to the estate of said decedant [sic], viz:

One tract of first rate land, lying on the Barren fork of Collin's river, containing 300 acres, with 12 acres cleared and under good fence:

One tract of 90 acres, with 18 acres cleared:

One town lot in the town of M'Minnville. Twelve months credit will be given, the purchaser giving bond with approved security.

On 7 Oct 1818 the executors sold 333 acres for $1,053. They sold about 183 acres of land in Burke Co. NC on 25 Nov 1818 for $100 (was originally granted on 7 Jun 1799).

Thomas Wilcher Sr and his wife, Anne Walton, are likely buried in the Liberty Cumberland Presbyterian Church cemetery. He donated the land for the cemetery. Liberty is 1 mile south of McMinnville off Highway 55 on Liberty Lane. Turn left going south on Morrison St on Old Morrison Hwy then Liberty Lane and the Liberty Cumberland Presbyterian Church will be on the right as well as the cemetery.

Joseph M. Bragg and his wife, Richard M. Bragg, and other family members are buried here in order: Richard M. Bragg 14 Jun 1833 - 11 Dec 1858; Joseph M. Bragg 25 May 1798 - 9 Jul 1879; Clarissa T. Bragg 25 Sep 1806 - 16 Aug 1851; Hugh T. Bragg 25 Nov 1831 - 22 Dec 1845; and Martha Bragg 8 Feb 1845 - Jun 1845.

In summary Thomas Wilcher was probably born about 1745-46. He moved from Amherst County, VA, to Burke County, North Carolina (near Morganton), whe he was approximately 44 years old, in before Aug 1779. He moved on to Tennessee when he Thomas Wilcher, Sr. (cont'd) was about 62 years old.Thomas Wilcher died in Warren County, TN, Oct 1816 when he was about 71 years old.

Will of Thomas Wilcher, Sr

The will of Thomas Wilcher, Sr. to Annie Wilcher, et al was a Deed of Gift and is recorded in Warren County Deed Book D, pages 412-414.. It reads as follows:

"In the name of God, Amen. I, Thomas Wilcher of the County of Warren and the State of Tennessee, this 8th day of August A.D. 1816, being weak of body but of perfect mind and memory and calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed unto all men to die, do make and ordain this to be my last Will and Testament.

Principally and first of all, I recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God who gave it, and my body to the dust to be interred in a decent and Christian-like manner. At the discretion of my executors hereinafter named and as touching such worldly estate wherewith it has pleased God to bless me with in this life I give, devise and dispose of in the following manner. Viz,--I will and desire that all my just debts and funeral expenses be paid out of my estate.

1st Imprimis. I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Anne and son Archibald, all the tract of land whereon I now live lying north of John Harper old line to join a line of Thomas Wilcher, Junr said tract to run with the main road until it strikes the aforesaid line of Thomas Wilcher, Junr. Further I give to my wife and son aforesaid four negroes, viz. Isaac, Rella, Jo and Lawson with the increase of said slave Rella forever and should one or more of the aforesaid Negroes die before my decease in that case I will and allow the number to be kept up of others of my Negroes of my son's own choice. Also to my said wife and son I leave all my household furniture that I possess at my decease together with all stock of every description with all farming utentials and every necessary thing or things suitable for a farm and necessary to make life comfortable and living convenient to my wife during her natural life and to my son Archibald his heirs forever, and I do put my son in possession of the above with the injunction laid of my son Archibald that he shall during his mother's natural life support, take care, and nourish her as comfortable in this world as will be in his power.

2 Item. I give to my son Thomas Wilcher the tract of land where on he now lives containing 250 acres agreeable to the survey, be the same more or less to him and his heirs forever.

3 Imprimis. I give and bequeath to my daughter Sally Hennessee a Negro woman named Sucky with her off spring, the tract of land whereon James Hennessee now lives, containing by estimation 223 acres all my right and title of the same to her and her heirs forever.

4th Item. I give to my daughter Christian a tract of land beginning on my son Thomas' line where it crosses the road south side of said road that is the line between my son Thomas and son Archibald running with the road till it strikes John Harpers line thence with Harpers line to a red oak south side of the ?ting being a corner of Harper's tract, thence northeastwardly to a poplar marked TW, thence with said line east to a corner of another tract, thence south to a corner thence continuing south till it strikes another line of mine being a preference of Edmond McMahons(?) purchased from Anderson and Thomas Wilcher, Sr. (cont'd)

Doak, thence east to a corner thence south to a corner thence east to a corner then north to a corner on Thomas Vaughans line then west with his line to his corner thence north with his line to Thomas Wilcher, Junr., line to the road to the beginning including all in that boundary except an acre for the use of the church, also a Negro girl named June and her offspring to her and her heirs forever.

5th Item. I give to my daughter Nancy Staton a Negro girl Peggy and offspring during her natural life and at her death to be sold and the money accruing therefrom to be equally divided among her children begotten of her body, to them and their heirs forever.

6th Item. I give to my grand daughter Rachel Chambers one hundred dollars when collected out of my estate by my Exrs.

I give to my daughter Betsey Harper a Negro girl named Pat which are (sic) now in the possession of John Harper and that said girl shall never be sold not put away by no bargain or contract whatsoever from the use and benefit of my aforesaid daughter and her children during my daughter's natural life, and at her death my will is that said girl and her offspring be equally divided between her children forever.

7th I give to my daughter Lucy England a Negro boy named John, together with $300 that she has already received making her dividend equal with my other children to her and heirs forever.

8th Item. I give to daughter Ritty the sum of five dollars as she has heretofore received her dividend of my estate.

9th Item. I give to Polly, Thomas, and Aaron Vaughan my daughter Ritty's children begotten of her body one hundred dollars each and no more, by my Exors. To be given them when they arrive at age or at marriage.

10th Item. I give to my daughter Winny the sum of $5 at the discretion of my Exors. Hereafter named and empowering them to consider my daughter Winny that if they see her necessity required assistance that they will allow her the use of Negroe girl named Lucy as her need requires and to recall her at their discretion also upon their discretion to allow her to the amount of three hundred dollars occasionally as her necessity demands and should it be that her circumstance should not required to that amount I wish the other part of the $300 to be adapted for the purpose of educating her grandchildren viz Sandy England and Polly Taylor. The property that I bought at William Brasel's sale to be returned to my Exors. And it to be at their discretion if not discretionally used. Two horses, thirteen head of cattle, 15 head of hogs and the house furniture.

11th Item. And the residue of my estate both real and personal not heretofore bequeathed I wish to be sold and equally divided amon my legatees viz. Sally Hennessee, Nancy Staton, Betsey Harper, Lucy England, Thomas Wilcher, and daughter Christian, Archibald Wilcher to them and them only and heirs forever.

12th Item. And I do by these presents appoint my trusty friends Benjamin Wooten, Thomas Wilcher, Jr., and Joseph England the sole executors of this my will and testament and none other ratifying and confirming this to be my last will and testament and revoking and disallowing all other wills heretofore by me made. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the date first written."

Per "The North Carolinian Journal by Wm. Perry Johnson editor in March 1960 the North Carolina Revolutionary War Pay Vouchers listed Thomas Wilcher (or Welsher) from the Morgan District, Burke Co., NC. No further information is available, but this shows clearly Thomas Wilcher Sr was a Revolutionary War soldier from the state of North Carolina. He was in North Carolina from 1789 - 1807.

Thomas Wilcher, Sr. (cont'd)

Research on the surname "Wilcher" shows it to be a variation on the name "Wiltshire," a county in SW England. About 90% of all people with that name 200-300 years ago came from there. Wilshire, England, is probably where the American Wilchers came from. The vast majority of the Wilchers (or other spellings) who came to the New World in the 1600s and 1700s came as indentured servants, usually as an alternative to other punishment for petty offenses. The first Wilcher in America showed up in Virginia in 1635 as an indentured servant. Over the next 150 years a couple dozen others showed up in various places: Maryland, Pennsylvania, and the Bahamas. About 3/4 of the Wilchers came to Virginia in the 1600s and 1700s. One of these early Virginia indentured servants was likely the progenitor of the Wilchers in Amherst-Bedford.

A summation of early Wilchers...

Below is a message I posted a couple of years ago to Geneva Anderson. She apparently has the "link" I'm looking for which puts my John Wilcher (b. 1783) in KY at the right time. However, we haven't connected yet. I think she sent me a monumental, several megabyte database dump in 1999, but nothing specific on the link.

I've posted this to her again in hopes she will be more specific. It doesn't look like my John and your John are the same guy, although they may have been from the same family before that.

I am descended from a line of Wilchers that found its way to the Pacific Northwest in 1868. I can trace back five generations (including myself) to a Stephen Wilcher, who was born in Casey Co. or Lincoln Co., KY, in 1810. He moved to Missouri in the 1840's, then on to Clark Co., WA, in 1868. His descendants all live in the PNW.

Stephen's father appears to have been named John Wilcher, who was 67 years old in the 1850 census and claimed to have been born in KY. That would put his birth in 1783, pretty early for KY, but possible if his parents were there with Daniel Boone and George Rogers Clark (and a whole lot of Indians).

The family seems to have been from Virginia. Your Amherst, Bedford Co., connections look promising because of the same set of names-- John, Joseph, Charles, etc.-- and because of the dates. They were there in the late 1700's and the same names show up in Casey-Lincoln, KY, in the early 1800's. This doesn't do much for John Wilcher's claim about being born in KY in 1783, but works well for connecting Wilchers in KY and VA.

I've also been looking back further to try to figure out how Wilchers got to Amherst-Bedford in the late 1700's. Most of my conclusions are based purely on statistical probablilities. For example, research on the surname "Wilcher" shows it to be a variation on the name "Wiltshire," a county in SW England. About 90% of all people with that name 200-300 years ago came from there. 3) figure out the who, when, and how of the Wilcher migration from England to Virginia and then to Amherst-Bedford.

Any information you can provide that might help fill in the "middle years" would be appreciated.

Do you have further info on the Amherst County, Va Wilchers which you could share with me? I have come across references to Charles and John W. Wilcher being sons of Joseph and Barbara Wilcher of Amherst Co, Va (late 1700s time period). There was also a Thomas Wilcher who may fit as another relative. Thomas Wilcher, formerly of Amherst co, Va, is listed in land records of Burke co, Nc along with Charles Wilcher. This same Thomas had issue who removed to Warren and Cannon Counties, Tennessee.

I would appreciate any details you might have on any Amherst co, Va Wilcher family, which might help me verify or add to the limited Wilcher info I have...

Hey cuz,

I was looking at your notes for Nancy Anna Walton and looking at the sources... I was wondering if you realized that the Family Search sources link back to trees that give her parents as the William who married Susannah Cobb? Even so, I still don't think this is correct because there is no proof that she was even a Walton let alone the daughter of William and Susannah. Also, I have seen (but not sure if it is sources) that Anne, the daughter of William and Susannah was married to someone else. Again, I don't know if that had sources or not but it is worth noting. I thought you might want to know in case you want to alter or remove those cited sources. So far I haven't found anything regarding her parentage or even real surname. I have definitely ruled out William Walton and Elizabeth Tilman as her parents. They were married on 1 Dec 1758. I found the record proving their marriage date and therefore proving they aren't her parents.

I have found quite a few deed records for Thomas Wilcher. I wasn't really thinking about Warren County having been formed from White County before. A lot of the land deeds for him are in White County...something to keep in mind when searching for records for Warren County. I will have to change the format from jpg to pdf for you so it may take some time.

Here is a plat map that shows his land in Warren County:

A note regarding Thomas Wilcher's death date... it is given by everyone as 08 Aug 1816...but that was the day he made the will. The transcription of his will indicates his will was proved in open court during the Oct 1816 term so his death date is sometime between when he wrote his will (08 Aug 1816) and when it was proved (Oct 1816). Then there is a note at the bottom which reads:
Given at office the 7th June A.D. 1823
So I am not sure what that is about.

Interestingly, on the page opposite to one of the Thomas Wilcher land deeds was one for James Cain. The name is mistranscribed as Caise but when you look at the bottom of the document it is more obvious that it said Cain. I also found this tidbit in the White County Minutes on GenWeb (this site also has lots several mentions of Thomas Wilcher suing various people for money owed).

Biography
Thomas Wilcher was probably born about 1745-46. He moved from Amherst County, VA, to Burke County, North Carolina (near Morganton), when he was approximately 44 years old, before Aug 1879. He moved on to Tennessee when he was about 62 years old. Thomas Wilcher died in Warren County, TN, Oct 1816 when he was about 71 years old.[2]

Collins River is the main stream of the county. this stream rises in Grundy County, passes near McMinnville, just below the town receives the waters of Barren Fork, and empties into Caney Fork. Hickory Creek is a branch of Barren Fork, and Charles Creek empties into Collins River, they, with the two named and Mountain Creek composing the principal streams of the county.
When the pioneers came to what is now the territory of Warren County, they found the valleys and coves covered with an almost impenetrable growth of tall cane and the mountains and hills with heavy timber. Game was plentiful and many are the stories of exciting bear and deer hunts handed down and now told with keen relish by the sons of the hardy pioneers.

Hello. I am researching the Wilchers who left Lincoln County, Kentucky and came to the Fountain, Parke and Warren counties in Indiana. My 3rd great grandmother is Elizabeth Wilcher who married Joseph Cox in Warren Co., Indiana in 1829. According to my 3rd great grandfather's (Joseph Cox) biography, Elizabeth was born near the Crab Orchard in Lincoln County, Kentucky.. excerpt: "...Mr. Cox was married the second time in 1827 to Elizabeth WILSCHER near Attica who was born In Kentucky near the Crabb Orchard February 4, 1804..." There is also a Daniel Wilcher (born about 1814 in KY) who married Mary Mickle in Warren Co., IN in 1833 and a Washington "Wilsher" (born in KY about 1812) that married Jerutia Fenton in Parke County, Indiana in 1838. Daniel and Washington are living in Massac County, Illinois in 1850. Daniel bought land there in 1847 and 1852. Washington bought land in Massac Co., IL in 1848. These Wilchers are all connected including John Wiltsher born in VA about 1775 and living in Fountain Co., IN in 1850. I need to figure out how though. Any information is greatly appreciated! Surnames: Wilcher/Wilsher/Welcher
Wilchers (in various spellings) arrive in Lincoln county in 1804, when Charles and Joseph show up as Early Householders in Lincoln County. These were white males over 21. Joseph's listing also shows one white male over 16 but less than 21.Then John Welcher joins the list in 1807. (Is he Joseph's son?)

All 3 (Welcher) are listed in 08-09. In 1811 Joseph and John are listed, but not Charles.. My book ends with 1811 dates.

Joseph Wilcher m. Susanna Hunter in Lincoln County KY on 6 May 1806. (in an adjacent county, Mercer, Nancy Hunter died in 1804 and bequeathed property to, among others, her daughter Susana).

John Wilcher m. Jane Combs in Lincoln County KY on 13 Feb 1809.

John and Joseph show up on the Lincoln County census in 1810.

I have not found Charles anyplace in the 1810 census, although just before he shows up in KY in 1804, a Charles was in Burke Co. NC 1800-1803, and I suspect this is the same one. So he could have either been missed in the 1810 census or in transit. Charles Welcher is in Lincoln County 1820 census at the right age. John (and William "Witcher") are in the Casey County 1820 census. Casey County was created from part of Lincoln County about that time.

In 1830, John Wilsher (again, the correct age) is in Casey County, as is Charles (Wilshire). Washington Wilcher and James Wisher are in either Lincoln or Casey in 1830.

It is interesting to note that John and Charles are the sons of Joseph Wilcher who died in Amherst Co VA in 1792, and are named in his will, along with their sister Sarah and Joseph's wife Barbary. Most online indexes and even abstracts fail to mention Charles in the will, although he is in the book. Charles had sold all or part of his interest in that VA land prior to 1795, and a Charles ends up in NC by 1800, and then in KY by 1804 (after selling NC land in 1803).I would like to get some confirmation that this is the one and same. Ages on census records certainly work, but I haven't had a chance to exclude all other Charles Wilchers in that time frame.

It is also interesting that your Elizabeth and Joseph Cox name their children Susanna, Joseph and Sarah, all of which are in this line.

There are a lot of Josephs, Johns, and Charles in Amherst and other VA Counties around this time, and I am not sure how all of this ties in, but I hope it helps.

I will be traveling and not on this post for a while, but do let me know what you find!

I'm glad to talk to someone who is equally interested in the Wilchers from Lincoln Co., KY. I found Levi Wilcher's Will in Lincoln County, Kentucky in 1848, he mentions Jeremiah Wilcher, Liberty Wilcher, Hansford Wilcher and Charles M. Wilcher. Charles was the administrator. Actually, he owed money to the above and their notes are mentioned. Levi states that he wishes to leave his entire estate to be divided among his father and brothers & sisters. I'm pretty sure that that John Wilcher in Lincoln Co., KY along with Joseph is the one that moved to Fountain Co., IN. I believe there were two Johns. Washington Wilcher moved to Parke Co., Indiana as did my Elizabeth (Wilcher) Cox. But Washington's brother, Daniel Wilcher, moved with Washington to Massac Co., IL where it appears they spent the rest of their lives.

Or any sources of information about the children of the earliest John Wilcher or Joseph Wilcher in Lincoln County?

I don't have any further information, these Wilchers seem to be pretty elusive. But after further breaking down of the census, that John "Wiltsher" living in Fountain Co., Indiana in 1850 was born about 1775 and doesn't fit the age bracket for either of the males in John Wilsher in Lincoln Co., KY in the 1810 census, unless there's an error. In the 1810 Lincoln Co., Kentucky census with John Wilsher, there are 2 adult males one in age bracket 16-25 (1785-1794) and the eldest is 45 and over (born before 1765). So which one is head of household? Could the younger one be Charles?
I had my DNA (Family Finder) done and I am connecting to Elisha Wilcher b. 1801 and died in Wayne Co., KY in 1878 and also connecting to Thomas Wilcher who died in Warren Co., Tennessee in 1816. I am related to these Wilchers but can't find how they are related to each other and so forth. They have that Thomas Wilcher born in Caroline Co., Virginia. I am also connecting to a George Calvin Wilcher born in Middletown, Fredrick, Co. in 1836. You should do the Family Finder DNA test! Maybe we can get some answers.

I would like to add more information on the Wilcher family from Lincoln County, KY in hopes that it might help us in connecting the Wilcher families from Lincoln County, KY. Our line is Joseph Wilcher (b ? d bef 1818) m Hannah Wilcher 20 Jan 1815 in Lincoln County KY. Hannah was b ca 1800 d aft 1860 in likely Cannon County TN. About the only info that I have on Joseph is that he died before 11 Nov 1818 in Lincoln County, TN. (Note Lincoln County, TN not Lincoln County KY). Was this the same Joseph Wilcher who first appears in Lincoln County KY in 1804?

In 1818, there was an Inventory of property sold and property set aside Hannah and two children at that time. There was a Daniel Preston mentioned in the sale of the inventory, but I cannot identify with certainty the the relationship to Hannah, possible father. Hannah (Preston) Wilcher m2 Vach (Vaach) Crabtree bef 1830 and the Crabtree family is found in the 1830, 1840, 1850 & 1860 Census in Cannon County, TN. We can identify the two Wilcher children as 1) Wm. Wilcher (b ca 1817 TN d aft 1870 in Marion County, AR?) m1 Unknown m2 1846 Cannon Co TN to Emeline Gilley and 2) Charles Madison Wilcher b 12 May 1818 TN d bef 1 Oct 1894 Cannon County, TN. Charles Madison Wilcher m Polly E. Cox, dau of James A. Cox (b 1771 - 1780 VA d ca 1842 Cannon County, TN) and Judith Jones (b ca 1779 VA d 1880 Cannon County, TN. Associated with family names Stone, Gilley, Jones, Elkins, and others. I would like to correspond with anyone having information on these families.

I still have not gotten my scanner to work, but I do want to send you this info from Tennessee Tidbits 1118 - 1914 Vol III. Quoted.

WILCHER, Thos. Died in 1854 as shown in the suit of Wm. W. Wilcher et als vs Paulina Wilcher et als.

Thos. Wilcher had in his lifetime advanced land to Jno. Cain for the benefit of his family. Complainants were his heirs and Paulina Wilcher was the widow.

There are now seven children. Paulina is to have 1/8 share. (War TN, Ch Ct Min, 2/183) A suit was entered 25 March 1857 by Johnathan J. Tucker vs John T. Wilcher & others.

Thomas Wilcher Sr. had made a Deed of Trust to John Cain for the payment of some debts therein mentioned, and Secured to his wife and children.

He had several children among whom was Thomas Wilcher Jr. who died previous to his Father.

Thomas Sr. left as his children and heirs at Law

John T. Wilcher, Virginia Paulina Thomas & George. (Ibid 215)

Wm. W. Wilcher & Archable P. Wilcher bought part of the land. (Ibid 228) On 24 March 1858

Mrs. Biggs, wife of Wiley Biggs, and Mrs. Moore, wife of Thos. Moore, were privily examined by the Chancelor touching the disposition they wish to be made of their share of their decd. father's Estate. They say that their husbands may receive their share.

There were seven primary heirs,

Thos.Moore, Wiley Biggs, A. P. Wilcher, Wm. Wilcher, the children of Joseph M. Bragg by his late wife, Thos. Wilcher's children. (This is only six but A. P. Wilcher received two shares.) (Ibid 332)

A suit was shown 28 March 1859 by William W. Wilcher, Hugh T. Morrow & Christian his wife, Wiley Biggs & Nancy his wife agst. Paulina Wilcher, Archd. P. Wilcher (Patrick H. Braggs, Nancy Braggs, Paulina Braggs, Richd. M. Braggs Admr., Archd. Braggs, Mary Braggs, Saml. Braggs & Joseph Braggs), Thos. J. Moore & wife Amanda E., also Thos. Wilcher Jr. children, viz, Jno. Thos. Wilcher, Virginia Wilcher, Paulina Wilcher, Thos. Wilcher & George Wilcher & others. The estate was divided into 7 equal parts.

The 7 parts were:

1 & 2. A. P. Wilcher & as assignee of Morrow;

3. Heirs of Mrs. Bragg;

4. T. J. Moore & wife;

5. Wiley Biggs & wife;

6. Wm. W. Wilcher;

7. Thos Wilchers Heirs. (Ibid 385)

At the September term 1865 in the suit of K. P. Green vs. J. M. Bragg and et als (very dim entry) leave is granted complainant to insert the name of Thos Wilcher, Grandfather of Defts., instead of Clarissa Bragg, Mother of Defts. (Ibid 3/252)

OLD BURIAL GROUNDS OF WARREN COUNTY, TENN. By MRS. BLANCHE BENTLEY

"One of the best known and first organized churches of Warren County was Liberty, a mile or so from McMinnville. As shown by his will, land was given by Thomas Wiltshire (Wilcher), the church house built and the church, Cumberland Presbyterian in doctrine, organized all in 1815. William Cheek Smartt is the reputed founder and he and John Allison, a Revolutionary soldier, were two of its first elders William C. Smartt, his wives, his venerable mother, and many descendants are buried in this peaceful enclosure which in the springtime, with its level grassy turf, its evergreens, flowers, and waving vines, looks very like a garden of the long ago. William C. Smartt was a commissioned general in the militia, but he won his spurs as a fighting man at Mobile under Jackson where he was promoted to the rank of major."

The other day when I talked to you, I mentioned that someone had moved to TN when they were 6 yrs. old. I said that it was Patrick but I was WRONG. It was Archibald W. Hennessee. Could you tell me where you found that fact. Reference in your notes: See testimony. What testimony and do I have it? I have not seen anything in detail on Archibald at all. Where are you getting this? I realize that you said that you did not have references on some of the things but if you have this, I would like to have it. I do have the rest of the references.

I discovered a White county divorce record for Jesse and Matilda England in 1807. My research leads me to believe that the Matilda is Matilda Braswell or Brasseal who died in Warren County Tn in 1821 after remarrying a man named Taylor. Her belongings were retrieved by Joseph G.England b:Jefferson Co Ky who was her uncle living in Warren Co Tn. In his court deposition he listed the property and delivered it to Matildas father William and mother Winnefred Wilcher Braswell to be held until Matildas children come of age. Her son was Landy England and her daughter was Polly Taylor.

Question---- Was the Jesse England in the divorce record the son of Aaron England in White county? If so he later remarried an Isabella Fryer and had several children. Any assist appreciated.

"One of the best known and first organized churches of Warren County was Liberty, a mile or so from McMinnville. As shown by his will, land was given by Thomas Wiltshire (Wilcher), the church house built and the church, Cumberland Presbyterian in doctrine, organized all in 1815. William Cheek Smartt is the reputed founder and he and John Allison, a Revolutionary soldier, were two of its first elders William C. Smartt, his wives, his venerable mother, and many descendants are buried in this peaceful enclosure which in the springtime, with its level grassy turf, its evergreens, flowers, and waving vines, looks very like a garden of the long ago. William C. Smartt was a commissioned general in the militia, but he won his spurs as a fighting man at Mobile under Jackson where he was promoted to the rank of major."

Thomas & Paulina Gordon Wilcher had another son named Thomas born Abt. 1813.

He moved to Amite Co., MS before 1850. He married Jane White 27 February 1844.

They are listed in the 1850 Amite Co. census. He died in 1853. His children are named in Thomas, Jr.'s will. These are his children named in the will: Jno. Thos. Wilcher, Virginia Wilcher, Paulina Wilcher, Thos. Wilcher, & George Wilcher, & others. The other child named in census records & note the will is William born about 1846.

I am looking for Christian WILCHER (b: Nov. 16, 1816, Tenn; d: Jan 1, 1900 Bartlett, Williamson Co., TX)
Married to Hugh Thomas "H.T." MORRISON abt 1847
Per the 1850 census, they were living in Warren Co., Tenn. Thomas MORRISON age 30, Christian MORRISON, age 36 and son Samuel T. MORRISON, age 2.
By 1880, they had moved to Bell Co., Tx.

I have that her parents were Thomas WILCHER and Pauline C. GORDON

I have Thomas parents as Thomas WILCHER and Nancy Anna "Ann" WALTON

H.T. and Christian MORRISON were my ggg-grandparents

Later found Gideon in Gainesville, Cooke Co., TX during census of 1860. Probably moved there in 1860 as his youngest child, Sarah, was born, in Missouri, in 1859. Also listed with this family was Elizabeth Mayberry, age 20.

Well, I found a land record for Thomas Hennessee in Wright County MO dated 1 June 1859.

Of note, there is a Thomas Hennessee in Robertson County, TN in 1862 on the IRS lists. He was listed as exempt which as I understand was the case with older people. Of course it could be someone else, I am not sure but thought it was worth sharing.

I am also including the land records I have for Gideon Cain. I wanted to see if perhaps he bought Thomas' land when Thomas left but it doesn't appear he did. I checked the land records to see exactly what the locations were. They are as follows:

1 June 1859 - Thomas Hennessee - North half of lots 1 and 2 of NW quarter of section 19 in township 30, range 13 AND NE quarter of the NE quarter of section 24, township 30 of range 14. Total of 124 acres and 43 hundredths of an acre.

15 Sep 1854 - Gideon C Hennessee - North half of lot 2 of the SW fractional quarter of section 18 in township 29 of range 14. Total of 26 acres and 33 hundredths of an acre.

15 May 1857 - Gideon C Hennessee - North West quarter of the south east quarter of section 13 in township 29 of range 15. Total of 40 acres.

1 Oct 1860 - Gideon C Hennessee - NE quarter of the SE quarter of Section 13 in township 29 or range 15 AND the south half of lot 2 of the northwest quarter of section 18 in township 29 of range 14. Total of 66 acres and 45 hundredths of an acre.

1 Oct 1860 - Gideon C Hennessee - south west quarter of the south east quarter of section 18 in township 29 of range 14. Total of 50 acres.

1 July 1861 - Gideon C Hennessee - south half of lot 1 of the south west quarter of section 18 in township 30 of range 13. Total of 40 acres.

Notice the dates for Gideon Cain's land patents. He and his family lived in Cooke county, TX in 1860 (census was taken 21 July). So that would put him moving there sometime between 14 Nov 1859 (his daughter Sarah's birth date) and 21 July 1860 and leaving there before 1 Oct 1860 unless he just made a trip there to buy more land before returning to TX of course. So it would appear his time in Texas was brief.

You will also be happy to know I FINALLY found a record for Gideon Thomas Hennessee's marriage to Mary Stewart! I looked forever for that thing before but I know why I didn't find it... someone incorrectly transcribed it as G F Hennessee and Marg Stewart. Also, they were married in Ripley County, Missouri although both lived in Walnut Ridge. They were married on 14 Sep 1891.

Was mean to Hannah. Children ran him off and lore has it he started a second family in Missouri. Appears in 1860 Wright Co.,MO Federal Census. Listed in Van Buren Co. during 1870 census.

Tombstone of his first daugter, Frances, lists his middle intial as "S".

Harrison listed instead of Nettie ( Sarah), married to Mc Gregor. on Audleys will he names Nettie ( Sarah). there is a typo on the will it reads Nutty which I assumed was Nettie, or have I missed something?

35th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry (5th Infantry) (1st Mountain Rifle Regiment)

35th Infantry Regiment formerly the 5th Tennessee Regiment Provisional Army, [also called 1st Mountain Rifle Regiment] was organized during September, 1861, at Camp Smartt, near McMinnville, Tennessee. Its men were from the counties of Grundy, Warren, Van Buren, Cannon, Sequatchie, DeKalb, Hamilton, and Bledsoe. It fought at Shiloh, Shelton's Hill, Richmond, Perryville, then moved to Knoxville, Shelbyville, and later Murfreesboro. During the war it was assigned to General L.E. Polk's, Granbury's, and Palmer's Brigade, Army of Tennessee, and from September, 1863, to April, 1864, consolidated with Nixon's 48th Regiment. The 35th participated in many battles from Murfreesboro to Atlanta, returned to Tennesee with Hood, and saw action in North Carolina. It had 369 engaged at Shiloh, lost nine percent of the 295 in the Richmond fight, and sustained 25 casualties at Murfreesboro. Twenty-nine percent of the 215 at Chickamauga were disabled and in December, 1863, the 35th/48th totalled 251 men and 207 arms. On April 26, 1865, it surrendered. The field officers were Colonel Benjamin J. Hill; Lieutenant Colonels R.B. Roberts, Joseph A. Smith, and John L. Spurlock; and Majors Joseph Brown, William W.J. Broawnlow, and G.S. Deakins.

Some years ago a number of old books and ledgers were discarded from the courthouse and were slated for the garbage dump when the courthouse janitor called me thinking I might want to survey the discarded material. I picked up all the books. Among them was a ledger containing a listing of insolvent estates for the period 1860-1881. Also listed in the ledgers was the Tax List for the 14th Civil District of Warren County for the year 1859.

It will be noted that the period following the Civil War was a difficult economic period for many residents who were considered somewhat wealthy prior to the conflict. This listing is valuable in determining the approximate death date of the individual involved in the insolvency.

ATTEMPTED SUICIDE.
Polk McVey, a well-to-do farmer of the Fourth district of this county, attempted suicide last Thursday night by blowing his brains out with a double-barrel shot gun. Part of his cheek was blown off and a very dangerous though not necessarily fatal, wound inflicted. Several days ago - an account of it appeared in our last issue - various creditors of McVey having claims aggregating several hundred dollars filed suit in the Chancery Court against McVey alleging that he was secreting himself from creditors and trying to dispose of his property to defeat their just claims, and attaching all his property, real and personal. It now develops that McVey was away on a big drunk and had no thought of defrauding creditors and coming home heard of these charges, and being still under the influence of liquor, attempted to kill himself with above results.

Mrs. Cecil Hillis McVey, 87-year-old resident of Route 9, died of a lingering illness in River Park Hospital at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. A member of the Church of Christ and native of Van Buren County, she was the widow of Palo McVey, who died in 1960, and daughter of the late Robert A.C. and Lucy Grove Hillis. She is survived by two brothers, Will Henry and A.C. Hillis of McMinnville, a niece and four nephews. Oscar Groves conducted services at 11 a.m. Thursday in McMinnville Funeral Home Chapel. Interment was in Crain Hill Cemetery.

16th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry

16th Infantry Regiment was organized in June, 1861, at Camp Harris, Tennessee, with 952 officers and men. Its companies were drawn from the counties of DeKalb, Coffee, Warren, Putnam, and White. Sent to Virginia, the unit was active in Lee's Cheat Mountain Campaign and later moved to South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, then Kentucky. After fighting at Perryville, it was assigned to M.J. Wright's, Maney's, and Palmer's Brigade, Army of Tennessee. The regiment participated in the campaigns of the army from Murfreesboro to Atlanta, endured Hood's winter operations, and saw action in North Carolina. It reported 199 casualties at Perryville and lost fifty-two percent of the 402 engaged at Murfreesboro. Of the 242 at Chickamauga, twenty-eight percent were disabled and in December, 1863, it totalled 212 men and 157 arms. The unit surrendered on April 26, 1865. Its field officers were Colonels David M. Donnell and John H. Savage; Lieutenant Colonels Daniel T. Brown and Thomas B. Murray; and Majors Patrick H. Coffee, Henry H. Faulkner, Joseph Goodbar, and Ben. Randals.

The Battle of Perryville, also known as the Battle of Chaplin Hills, was fought on October 8, 1862, in the Chaplin Hills west of Perryville, Kentucky, as the culmination of the Confederate Heartland Offensive (Kentucky Campaign) during the American Civil War. Confederate Gen. Braxton Bragg's Army of Mississippi[5] won a tactical victory against primarily a single corps of Maj. Gen. Don Carlos Buell's Union Army of the Ohio. The battle is considered a strategic Union victory, sometimes called the Battle for Kentucky, since Bragg withdrew to Tennessee soon thereafter. The Union retained control of the critical border state of Kentucky for the remainder of the war.

On October 7, Buell's army, in pursuit of Bragg, converged on the small crossroads town of Perryville in three columns. Union forces first skirmished with Confederate cavalry on the Springfield Pike before the fighting became more general, on Peters Hill, when the Confederate infantry arrived. Both sides were desperate to get access to fresh water. The next day, at dawn, fighting began again around Peters Hill as a Union division advanced up the pike, halting just before the Confederate line. After noon, a Confederate division struck the Union left flank—the I Corps of Maj. Gen. Alexander M. McCook—and forced it to fall back. When more Confederate divisions joined the fray, the Union line made a stubborn stand, counterattacked, but finally fell back with some units routed.[6]

Buell, several miles behind the action, was unaware that a major battle was taking place and did not send any reserves to the front until late in the afternoon. The Union troops on the left flank, reinforced by two brigades, stabilized their line, and the Confederate attack sputtered to a halt. Later, three Confederate regiments assaulted the Union division on the Springfield Pike but were repulsed and fell back into Perryville. Union troops pursued, and skirmishing occurred in the streets until dark. By that time, Union reinforcements were threatening the Confederate left flank. Bragg, short of men and supplies, withdrew during the night, and continued the Confederate retreat by way of Cumberland Gap into East Tennessee.[6]

Considering the casualties related to the engaged strengths of the armies[2], the Battle of Perryville was one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War. It was the largest battle fought in the state of Kentucky.[7]

28 Apr 1991 - William Butler Smith (1919-2007), great grandson of Thomas, retells the following story;

The tale is about his grandfather, James Thomas Hennessee, who at the young age of 10 or 12 walked back to Warren County,TN from Wright County,MO. It appears that Thomas was ailing and wanted to return his family to the his homeplace and sent son, James, in advance to ascertain that possiblity. James then returned to Missouri and Thomas & family returned to Warren County. Other family members tell me stories that James was head-strong and never gave an inch while teamstering, even when he had an empty load he would travel the middle of the road.

I cannot remember exactly, however I think my Dad told me stories of his grandfather running whiskey from the mountains. I once asked Dad about his grandfather, "Ol Jim" Hennessee and all he could remember was that they shared the same birthday. That irked him as he said the family paid attention to his grandfather and not him..DAH

James was a first cousin, once-removed, to his wife, Rachel.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF SHELLSFORD BAPTIST CHURCH

Shellsford Baptist Church is one of the oldest active congregations in Warren County, Tennessee.

Shellsford, located on the Collins River a short distance downstream from Buck Springs, was one of the earliest settlements in Warren County. The community got its name from the Shell family who settled here in the early 1800's near the ford of the river, hence the name Shellsford. James Shell established a grist mill at the Shellsford location, an exact date is not known. Shellsford, the old Shell mill, Buck Springs, and Shellsford Baptist Church became important in the history of early Warren County. Buck Springs, according to tradition, received its name as a result of the successful deer hunting of pioneer Jordan Sellars at the spring.

The Shellsford Baptist Church was originally known as the Buck Springs Baptist Church and was sometimes further identified by its location "on Collins River." The congregation was established in 1810 as a result of a brush arbor meeting held by Reverend William Thompson and Reverend George Stubblefield, prominent Baptist ministers of that era.

The original meeting house, built after the brush arbor meeting, was built of split logs. The church building consisted of one door, two windows and a fireplace. The first building stood until 1851 when it was replaced by a frame building. The present building was erected in 1947 and completed with the addition of a two story educational building in 1959.

There are many traditions linking the Hennessee Family to Missouri...while travelling in that state in a covered wagon the family was attacked by bandits and rescued by the JAMES Brothers. Frank and Jesse may have been former neighbors

(1). What is known for certain is that AJH met and married his wife in Warren County
(2). They moved to Sequatchie County (Dunlap) where he worked as a road boss. One day a worker threatened AJH whom he shot and killed. AJH soon fled to Canada (records have it that his son, Thomas, went Canada for a period of time) where he lived a number of years. Upon returning to Tennessee he lived briefly with his elderly wife on the poor farm where he died (3).

35th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry (5th Infantry) (1st Mountain Rifle Regiment)

35th Infantry Regiment formerly the 5th Tennessee Regiment Provisional Army, [also called 1st Mountain Rifle Regiment] was organized during September, 1861, at Camp Smartt, near McMinnville, Tennessee. Its men were from the counties of Grundy, Warren, Van Buren, Cannon, Sequatchie, DeKalb, Hamilton, and Bledsoe. It fought at Shiloh, Shelton's Hill, Richmond, Perryville, then moved to Knoxville, Shelbyville, and later Murfreesboro. During the war it was assigned to General L.E. Polk's, Granbury's, and Palmer's Brigade, Army of Tennessee, and from September, 1863, to April, 1864, consolidated with Nixon's 48th Regiment. The 35th participated in many battles from Murfreesboro to Atlanta, returned to Tennesee with Hood, and saw action in North Carolina. It had 369 engaged at Shiloh, lost nine percent of the 295 in the Richmond fight, and sustained 25 casualties at Murfreesboro. Twenty-nine percent of the 215 at Chickamauga were disabled and in December, 1863, the 35th/48th totalled 251 men and 207 arms. On April 26, 1865, it surrendered. The field officers were Colonel Benjamin J. Hill; Lieutenant Colonels R.B. Roberts, Joseph A. Smith, and John L. Spurlock; and Majors Joseph Brown, William W.J. Broawnlow, and G.S. Deakins.

(2)Mary Hayes, married Dec. 25, 1863, Warren County, TN., and 8 more children born this 2nd union:
Nancy Elvira, Elender, Carrie, Wm. Patrick, Rosettia, Jas. Archibald and twin sister, Mary "Polly", and Sarah Phillips Hennessee. Shortly after the death of Archibald, Widow Mary Hennessee left TN and joined her stepson, Ezekiel McGregor Hennessee and others of the Hennessee family who'd moved on to Texas. Arch's date of death confirmed by his widow "Mary (Hayes) Hennessee's" Confederate Pension Application, #9342.
