  1. 1.  John Cunningham, Sr. was born 13 Sep 1782, Commonwealth of Virginia; died 12 Oct 1858, Warren County, Tennessee; was buried Cunningham Cemetery, Rock Island, Warren County, Tennessee.

    Other Events:

    • Occupation: farmer & merchant
    • Also Known As: John "Rock Island" Cunningham
    • Also Known As: John Cunningham, II
    • Military: War of 1812 Veteran
    • Alt Birth: 13 Sep 1781

There is no absolute proof of John's kiinship to John & Keziah. I wanted to assign John to John because of several CUNNINGHAM DNA kinships being reported by FamilyTreeDNA.org, however:

Additionally, some people have speculated that John Cunningham (1792-1858, War of 1812) is the son of John Cunningham (1792-1858 Rev. War) and his first wife Mary Hill Pettipool in Virginia after they were married in 1771. There are two major abnormalities with this proposal:

#1 -John Cunningham was born ca 1792 based on his later Federal census and War of 1812 pension application. Mary Hill Pettipool died ca 1774 in VA. (Side Note: Mary Hill Pettipool never lived and she did not die in Viola, Warren, TN in 1774 as listed on many Ancestry.com family sites.) John's birth about 18 years after her death is simply not possible.

#2 - The will of John Cunningham (Viola, Rev. War) lists all of his children by name, from both marriages, and John Cunningham (Rock Island, War of 1812) is not listed.

In summary, the "overwhelming preponderance of evidence" suggests there is no direct family connection between the two John Cunningham progenitors.

John Cunningham II (1792-1858) was known during the early 19th Century in White and Warren Counties, TN as a Christian, Husband, Father, Pioneer, Patriot, Farmer, Tanner, Carpenter, Blacksmith, Distiller, Democrat and Grandfather.

There are a number of newspaper accounts, family trees, etc. which speculate that John Cunningham II (Captain in War of 1812) of Rock Island, Warren, TN is a son of another John Cunningham (Rev. War Soldier) of Viola, Warren, TN. Yet, the two communities, Rock Island and Viola, are at opposite ends of Warren county. Regretfully, the speculations appear incorrect due to the lack of "original source" documents and "first person" accounts.

The two John Cunninghams, in their individual migration to opposite ends of Warren County, TN, apparently used two different routes, separated by over a decade of time. (John II of Rock Island migrated from VA about 1804-1810 yet John of Viola moved with his second wife and family from NC about 1822). Some people believe that John II of Rock Island is perhaps one of the sons of John of Viola first marriage in Virginia. However, John of Viola's Last Will and Testament lists all his children by name (in Virginia and Tennessee- including one deceased) from both marriages and John Cunningham II of Rock Island is not listed.

As of October 2009, there are no known original source genealogy documentation (e.g. wills, land transfers, Family Bible, court records, etc.) nor genetic DNA test results which connect John Cunningham of Rock Island (Haplogroup I2b1) with John Cunningham of Viola.

In summary, the "overwhelming preponderance of evidence" indicates there is no direct family connection between the two John Cunninghams. However, the on-going search for the parents of John Cunningham II of Rock Island, Warren, TN continues with renewed energy and determination.

There are four historical-based "leads" requiring additional research:

    (1) 1812 Tax List for Warren County
    (2) The Blanche Bently papers as recorded in McMinnville at a Milestone, by Walter Womack, lists a JOHN CUNNINGHAM at Rock Island as an early settler ca 1797 in Rock Island, Warren County, TN.
    (3) Goodspeeds History of Tennessee - Warren County, Highlights a {First name unknown}, CUNNINGHAM from VA who served in the Rev. War, father of John Cunningham II of Rock Island, Warren, TN (Captain in the War of 1812).
    (4) http://www.tngnetweb.org/white/_minutes/1814-211.html page 211 includes an example of early court records in White County, TN listing JOHN CUNNINGHAM and others by name involved in land proceedings.

David, it was nice to talk to you last week. As I told you I have had a serious back injury and am just now feeling like sitting very long at the computer.

After I talked to you I thought of something else that would verify that the father of "John Cunningham of Rock Island" was also named John. However I feel like that I have proved without a doubt that it is not "John Cunningham of Viola".

As I mentioned to you The 1812 Tax list has John Cunningham and Jon Cunnigan. We know that John Cunningham settled in the Rock Island area very early. He married in White county 1813, so most likely he and his father Jon Cunnigan probably were here together before he married. (This part I am getting from county records.)

In Goodspeed"s "History of Warren County" The article about John Cunningham was written by his son, George. It doesn't mention the name of John's father, but says he served in the Revolutionary War.

John and Sarah Jane's youngest son was also named John. He married Martha Qualls Greenfield. Son, John died in 1862 leaving his wife and four small children. After his death Martha married Hamlet Woods. That marriage ended in divorce. She then married Mr. Anderson. Martha died and is buried in Riverside cemetery. Her tombstone reads like this.

"Martha Q. Greenfield, Wife of John Cunningham III. Oct. 24 1835 Mar.11 1919"

Warren County death records has "Martha Anderson"

So this is another proof that there were three Johns in that family. But in no way does it indicate that "Viola John Cunningham" was in that family line. As I told you I have court records listing all of the children of John and Kiziah Cunningham and there is no mention of a son, John. Their son, Langston had a son, John Jr. He was administrator of Langston's estate. Jr. did not mean it was the name of the father. Many times a father would name their son after his father, a brother or even an uncle. If the baby was the second one in that family with that name he would be a Jr. I don't think I ever did convince Mary Barnes of this.

I hope I have helped you some on this, not confused you more.

I"m looking forward to seeing you next time you visit McMinnville.

WILLIAM CUNNINGHAM - (1816-1854) William was known as a family-oriented-man plus an astute, gentleman-farmer in the Rock Island community. What is remarkable about William's life-story is that he spoke for what he believed to be right, honorable, just and noble yet suffered the ultimate sacrifice. (See source document, SECRET IDENTITY, by Mary Carol Rucker Estes)

At his untimely death in 1854, just days after celebrating his 38th birthday, William's seven children ranged in age from only 3 months (James Monroe Cunningham) to age 14 (Sarah Elizabeth Cunningham). William is to be remembered for his courage of conviction, his devotion to family and his life's work on earth.

    David,

I just ran across these items from Goodspeed. I'm sure you are familiar with them and may have them. Anyway, here they are ready to cut and paste into notes in FTM.

George W. Cunningham, farmer and merchant of the Fifteenth Civil District of Warren County; was born in that county June 16, 1821, and is the son of John and Sarah Cunningham. The father was born in Virginia about 1792, and died in Warren County, Tenn., about 1857 He was of Scotch Irish descent. His father, our subject's grandfather came to Tennessee in 1810), and located near the celebrated falls of Caney Fork, being among the first settlers of Warren County. He was in the war of 1812, and his father was in the Revolutionary war. John Cunningham was a farmer and tanner by occupation, and a Democrat in politics. The mother of our subject was born in Hyde County, N. C., October 25, 1799, and is now living with her son, George W. She has a limited education, but has a very strong mind for one of her age. She is a member of the Baptist Church. Our subject is the fourth of six children born to his parents, and now lives on the farm where he was born. His occupation in life has been that of a farmer until 1885, when in connection with his farm he engaged in the mercantile business at Rock Island, Tenn. He formed a co-partnership with his grandson, Willie A. Moore, under the firm title of Cunningham & Moore. They carry a stock of goods valued at $2,500 and Mrs. Cunningham also owns 215 acres of land in Warren County, with the principal part under cultivation. This is the result of economy and judicious management. In August, 1842, he married Miss Sarah A. Hennessee, a native of Warren County, born about 1823, and the daughter of A. W. and Jennie (Neal) Hennessee. To them was born one child, a daughter, named Amanda.

George married Sarah Adeline "Sally" Hennessee August 1842, Warren County, Tennessee. Sarah (daughter of Archibald Wilcher "Archie" Hennessee and Elizabeth Jane "Jennie" Neal) was born 25 Aug 1823, Warren County, Tennessee; died ~ 1904, Warren County, Tennessee; was buried Cunningham Cemetery, Rock Island, Warren County, Tennessee. JAMES MONROE CUNNINGHAM - (1854-1920) James Monroe Cunningham was orphaned at an early age; his father, William Cunningham, died when James Monroe was only three months old, then his mother, Ann (Neal) Cunningham passed away in 1858, when James Monroe was about 4 years old. James Monroe was reared by others thanks to the watchful eye of an uncle. Ann (Neal) Cunningham's brother, Pleasant L. NEAL, was appointed guardianship of her financial affairs and minor children-Liminda, Samantha, Franklin Pierce and James Monroe. According to family documents, James Monroe was considered "quite a catch" and even had an inheritance--in spite of the financial devastation of the Civil War-- when he initially married at age 16 in 1870 to Nancy Elizabeth (Jaco) Cunningham.

One of James Monroe's daughters, Minnie Bell Cunningham (b 5 Nov 1875-d 27 June 1911), wrote about her father in a letter, dated 14 March 1905 at Walling Town, White, TN to her brother, (William Uriah "Monroe" Cunningham- living in McMinnville, Waren, TN) quote:

" Father {James Monroe} Cunningham took a 34 mile horse back ride yesterday. got in about 8 o'clock last night. he made Looneys a visit in the neighborhood of Peel(sp?)-Chestnut. he got up as galey as a bug this morning. he has wrote you a letter I don't know what is in it. it may be that he is abugging you for ans. his Vinia Yates note and it may be asking to borrow money, he has borrowed of me till he is ashamed to ask me to loan him any more. he left the house a few minutes ago down through the field to wards Mary Jones."

James Monroe Cunningham (16 June 1854-15 March 1920) was the "baby of the family", did not really know his parents, reared during the uncertainity of the greatest conflict on American soil, was "looked after" by extended family members, married at an early age, struggled to gain economic stability, became a widower at age 45, remarried a much younger woman in 1902, yet left a legacy of "true grit" and "determination" through subsequent generations beginning immediately with his 12 children.

James married Nancy Elizabeth Jaco 13 Oct 1870. Nancy (daughter of Uriah Jaco and Rhoda "Rodie" Cardwell) was born 28 Feb 1848, (Warren County, Tennessee); died 13 Nov 1899, Warren County, Tennessee; was buried Friendship Cemetery, Campaign, Warren County, Tennessee. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

    ALBERT FURM CUNNINGHAM - 1873-1957
Note # 1 -- Albert "Furm" Cunningham was the consummate image of a Christian man, dedicated to his
family, neighbors and God. Albert Furm had an insight into how to motive his six children while maintaining
a sense of humor coupled with an extra-ordinary amount of patience and understanding. {Observations by
    grandson, Albert McMurtry Cunningham}
Note # 2 -- Below is a tribute to Albert Furm Cunningham by one of his grandsons, Dr. Joel Luther
Cunningham, (Son of Elbert Claxton Cunningham and Ruth Morton Journey), 15th Vice Chancellor and
President at The University of the South, Sewanee, TN excerpted from a speech titled "What's Worth
    Learning".
"I told you that, in this reflection on what’s worth learning, I would come back to my father’s father, Albert
Furm Cunningham, of western Warren County, not so far from here down the mountain. He died on Good
Friday in 1957, when I was thirteen. He had farmed well into his eighties, working hard with his hands most
every day for nearly all of his long life. Thinking about him as I worked on this talk led me to wonder what, if
anything, our grandchildren may remember about me when they reach my age. From my line of sight,
looking back more than fifty years through the eyes of the kid I was then, Furm Cunningham was a good
example of most all of Benjamin Franklin’s virtues. He understood people and loved them. He embodied
grace, courtesy, respect, and affection in ways that favored most everyone who knew him. I believe
something he told one of my cousins and me near the end of his life is worth learning for all of us. He said,
“Boys, I believe life will go better for you if you’ll always pay more attention to other folks than to
    you do to yourself.”
Note # 3 - Excerpt from SECRET IDENTITY by Mary Carol (Rucker) Estes; published 2009, wife of
Wayne Estes (Professor of Law-Pepperdine University, California); daughter of Minnie Ruth (Cunningham)
Rucker; a granddaugher of ALBERT FURM CUNNINGHAM, page 39, paragraph 3:
"If Grandpa Cunningham had been asked what was his greatest success in his life, he would probably say
it was leaving his children free of his debt. That is not, however, what I consider his greatest
accomplishment. Grandpa had an excellent ability to adapt to changing circumstances and recognize
how he could best contribute to his family's well being. That was his goal - to do what was best for

    WILLIE LEE CUNNINGHAM - Born 1 Aug 1902 Died 9 Jan 1992
Note Number One: Personal letter by his sister Minnie Ruth (Cunningham) Rucker in October 1991 and appended in January 1992 (extracted & annotated)
    Title: "The Survivor"

Was it because he had wanted a girl not another boy that our father named him "Willie Lee?"
He was small and delicate, not at all like his older brother {Jewell Potter Cunningham}. Our father was a schoolteacher and knew how boys pick on one another. He may have thought that with a name which could be either male or female his son might learn to fight to prove he was a boy. he could not have known what a battle Willie Lee had ahead of him just to stay alive.
Willie Lee's first battle with survival came before he was six months old. He looked pale and sickly. Our mother was not well. Another child was on the way she had to wean Willie Lee at once. In those days babies deprived of their mother's milk had a poor chance of survival. Grandmother {Martha Ann (Youngblood) Potter} took him over and patiently fed him bit by bit. She loved him through this difficult time.
    He was her boy.
Roy {Eugene}, the new baby, was strong and healthy and rapidly outgrew Willie Lee.
One day as the three boys sat on a bench at the kitchen table eating corn on the cob, Dad said,---"Just look at my three little pigs and the one in the middle is the "Wee Pig."
Willie Lee or Wee Pig was just beginning to grow when the boys were caught by whooping cough. The oldest and the youngest had little trouble and hardly stayed down but the Wee Pig almost didn't make it. He stopped growing for quite a while. The nickname Wee Pig followed him through grade school. When he was eight years old a typhoid fever epidemic broke out in the school. Wee Pig's brothers did not get this disease. His faithful mother and grandmother nursed him all summer and he slowly recovered.
"Ole Joe" and "Big Blue", the mules that provided the power for operating farm equipment were a challenge for Willie Lee. Joe was slow and contrary. Blue was quick and feisty. Willie Lee's job was to take
them to the pond for water. He rode them one at a time for this task. One day, that slow, Ole Joe took off so fast he left Willie Lee high and dry with no mule under him. The bumps and bruises finally healed and he tried Ole Blue again. This time, Blue saw a dead chicken at the edge of the pond. It spooked the mule, throwing Willie Lee from his back. Willie Lee hit his head on a rock and didn't wake up until the next day. {Years later} Willie Lee was declared a winner after he saved a neighbor's prized stallion, a champion-gaited horse named "Polk". Polk had fallen into a sinkhole full of slime and water and could not free himself. The neighbors were all called. They decided to let Willie Lee get into that slime and tie a rope around Polk's middle, just behind his front legs, and they would all pull together to free Polk. Willie Lee tied the rope as instructed, jumped on the stallion's back, kicked him in the sides and persuaded that horse to help himself. A cheer cold be heard for miles for the hero- little Willie Lee- as boy and beast rode out. Willie Lee had a hot temper with quick action. Mother {Hannah "Jackie" (Potter) Cunningham} described him as "knocking you down with one hand and picking you up with the other." He was past nine years old when I {Minnie Ruth (Cunningham) Rucker} was born. I remember him most as a teenager. He was my protector and friend. I was singing and swinging in the front porch one day when my brother, Roy, and a neighbor boy wanted to swing without me in it. They dumped me out. I went crying inside to Mother but Willie Lee knocked their heads together and said, "You don't treat my sister like that." They saw the fire in his eyes and ran away.
When Willie Lee went to high school he had grown so straight and tall the nickname Wee Pig did not fit at all. He had become an athlete excelling in baseball and basketball. One time, the baseball coach yelled at him as he stole a base and scored a run. "You Monkey, I didn't tell you to steal" the coach's angry voice carried over the cheers for Willie Lee. "Monkey" or "Monk" was then his new nickname. Seeing the pictures of Willie Lee, the captain of the basketball team, holding the ball, made him my idol. He told me recently that he didn't know a thing about football but played anyway in college. When he
    crossed the goal line with the ball and everyone yelled "TOUCHDOWN" he thought they were saying "TOUCH DOWN" so he rubbed the ball in the dirt in the end zone. {Not to be a "show off" but simply an innocent act of exuberant compliance.}
About a week before Willie Lee was to get his college degree, our oldest brother {Jewell Potter Cunningham} called and said he had admitted our brother to Vanderbilt Hospital {in Nashville, TN}. The
diagnosis was tuberculosis or T.B. as it was called in that generation. It brought such terror to us as does the word AIDS to the present generation. This was the most frightening battle yet. That grim reaper had claimed four young adults from our community including our youngest brother {Albert Luther Cunningham} at age eighteen. The doctor told us he would have Willie Lee back to work in one year.
"Just rest and follow my instructions" the doctor said. Certainly the words a fighter does not like to hear.
Since winning the tuberculosis battle, he has survived radical surgery for bleeding ulcers, prostrate cancer,
    heart failure and a stroke.
Willie Lee is a fighter. he walks haltingly with a cane today but is still active and enjoys living. He loves the Lord and people. Visitors are always welcomed warmly. His nurses, doctors and other caregivers
probably give more of their time to him than he expects. He has been a fighter and survivor for 87 years
and is waiting in the vestibule of glory for his crown. His little sister knows he has run his race well and that our father knew what he was about when he named him.
James 1:12 the New International Version, sums up Willie Lee: "Blessed is the man who perseveres
under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to
    those who love the Lord."
Yes, our father named him well and Willie Lee is "A Survivor."
    APPENDED JANUARY 1992
Willie Lee's name was changed once more when he met the beautiful Iva May McMurtry in 1931. She called him {by his initials} "W.L", so right for him that all the other names faded into the background. Iva
May and "W.L." were married January 1, 1933. They enjoyed teaching school together until retirement.
Their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 1983 was a highlight to be remembered.
"W.L." did not have to wait very long in the vestibule of glory. He passed through the door January 9, 1992.
"Then he died in a good old age, full of days, riches, and honor" I Chronicles 29:28

    W.L. Cunningham's favorite sayings:
    · Watch you P's and Q's
    · Let your Uncle Dudley show you.
    · Won't amount to a hill of beans.
    · Give it some "spiz-a-rink-tum".
    · He's fudging the numbers.
    · Quick as a cat can wink his eye.
    · If he's sick, he has the "epi-zootik"!
    · What in the Sam Hill is this?
    · People become more like themselves every day.
    · People behave in a way which only they can understand.
Mr. W.L. Cunningham was a whistler. You knew he was happy and satisfied when you heard his "merry
    tune" around the campus.
Mr. W.L. Cunningham was a great believer in SERENDIPITY, the faculty of finding valuable or agreeable
    things not sought for.
