Newcomer's Sons Floral Hills Chapel; burial in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 2-3 p.m. Saturday, at the chapel. Mr.Broyles was born in Wright County, MO. He worked as a mail/baggage handler for K.C. Terminal Railroad. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Red Bridge Baptist Church. Mr. Broyles is survived by his wife, Ruby Owens Broyles, of the home; three sons, Bill, Kansas City, MO, Tommy, Dallas, TX, and Edwin, Oklahoma City, OK; a sister, Estelline Mort, Sun City West, AZ; several grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Moved to Missouri. Appears in 1850 Wright Co.,MO Census. Living with him were two half-brothers, Thomas and Patrick. Gideon's family does not appear in 1860 Wright Co.,MO Census. Later found Gideon in Gainesville, Cooke Co., TX during census of 1860. Probably moved there in 1860 as his youngest child, Sarah, was born, in Missouri, in 1859. Also listed with this family was Elizabeth Mayberry, age 20.

Well, I found a land record for Thomas Hennessee in Wright County MO dated 1 June 1859.

Of note, there is a Thomas Hennessee in Robertson County, TN in 1862 on the IRS lists. He was listed as exempt which as I understand was the case with older people. Of course it could be someone else, I am not sure but thought it was worth sharing.

I am also including the land records I have for Gideon Cain. I wanted to see if perhaps he bought Thomas' land when Thomas left but it doesn't appear he did. I checked the land records to see exactly what the locations were. They are as follows:

1 June 1859 - Thomas Hennessee - North half of lots 1 and 2 of NW quarter of section 19 in township 30, range 13 AND NE quarter of the NE quarter of section 24, township 30 of range 14. Total of 124 acres and 43 hundredths of an acre.

15 Sep 1854 - Gideon C Hennessee - North half of lot 2 of the SW fractional quarter of section 18 in township 29 of range 14. Total of 26 acres and 33 hundredths of an acre.

15 May 1857 - Gideon C Hennessee - North West quarter of the south east quarter of section 13 in township 29 of range 15. Total of 40 acres.

1 Oct 1860 - Gideon C Hennessee - NE quarter of the SE quarter of Section 13 in township 29 or range 15 AND the south half of lot 2 of the northwest quarter of section 18 in township 29 of range 14. Total of 66 acres and 45 hundredths of an acre.

1 Oct 1860 - Gideon C Hennessee - south west quarter of the south east quarter of section 18 in township 29 of range 14. Total of 50 acres.

1 July 1861 - Gideon C Hennessee - south half of lot 1 of the south west quarter of section 18 in township 30 of range 13. Total of 40 acres.

Notice the dates for Gideon Cain's land patents. He and his family lived in Cooke county, TX in 1860 (census was taken 21 July). So that would put him moving there sometime between 14 Nov 1859 (his daughter Sarah's birth date) and 21 July 1860 and leaving there before 1 Oct 1860 unless he just made a trip there to buy more land before returning to TX of course. So it would appear his time in Texas was brief.

You will also be happy to know I FINALLY found a record for Gideon Thomas Hennessee's marriage to Mary Stewart! I looked forever for that thing before but I know why I didn't find it... someone incorrectly transcribed it as G F Hennessee and Marg Stewart. Also, they were married in Ripley County, Missouri although both lived in Walnut Ridge. They were married on 14 Sep 1891.

35th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry (5th Infantry) (1st Mountain Rifle Regiment)

35th Infantry Regiment formerly the 5th Tennessee Regiment Provisional Army, [also called 1st Mountain Rifle Regiment] was organized during September, 1861, at Camp Smartt, near McMinnville, Tennessee. Its men were from the counties of Grundy, Warren, Van Buren, Cannon, Sequatchie, DeKalb, Hamilton, and Bledsoe. It fought at Shiloh, Shelton's Hill, Richmond, Perryville, then moved to Knoxville, Shelbyville, and later Murfreesboro. During the war it was assigned to General L.E. Polk's, Granbury's, and Palmer's Brigade, Army of Tennessee, and from September, 1863, to April, 1864, consolidated with Nixon's 48th Regiment. The 35th participated in many battles from Murfreesboro to Atlanta, returned to Tennesee with Hood, and saw action in North Carolina. It had 369 engaged at Shiloh, lost nine percent of the 295 in the Richmond fight, and sustained 25 casualties at Murfreesboro. Twenty-nine percent of the 215 at Chickamauga were disabled and in December, 1863, the 35th/48th totalled 251 men and 207 arms. On April 26, 1865, it surrendered. The field officers were Colonel Benjamin J. Hill; Lieutenant Colonels R.B. Roberts, Joseph A. Smith, and John L. Spurlock; and Majors Joseph Brown, William W.J. Broawnlow, and G.S. Deakins.

Some years ago a number of old books and ledgers were discarded from the courthouse and were slated for the garbage dump when the courthouse janitor called me thinking I might want to survey the discarded material. I picked up all the books. Among them was a ledger containing a listing of insolvent estates for the period 1860-1881. Also listed in the ledgers was the Tax List for the 14th Civil District of Warren County for the year 1859.

It will be noted that the period following the Civil War was a difficult economic period for many residents who were considered somewhat wealthy prior to the conflict. This listing is valuable in determining the approximate death date of the individual involved in the insolvency.

ATTEMPTED SUICIDE.
Polk McVey, a well-to-do farmer of the Fourth district of this county, attempted suicide last Thursday night by blowing his brains out with a double-barrel shot gun. Part of his cheek was blown off and a very dangerous though not necessarily fatal, wound inflicted. Several days ago - an account of it appeared in our last issue - various creditors of McVey having claims aggregating several hundred dollars filed suit in the Chancery Court against McVey alleging that he was secreting himself from creditors and trying to dispose of his property to defeat their just claims, and attaching all his property, real and personal. It now develops that McVey was away on a big drunk and had no thought of defrauding creditors and coming home heard of these charges, and being still under the influence of liquor, attempted to kill himself with above results.

Mrs. Cecil Hillis McVey, 87-year-old resident of Route 9, died of a lingering illness in River Park Hospital at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. A member of the Church of Christ and native of Van Buren County, she was the widow of Palo McVey, who died in 1960, and daughter of the late Robert A.C. and Lucy Grove Hillis. She is survived by two brothers, Will Henry and A.C. Hillis of McMinnville, a niece and four nephews. Oscar Groves conducted services at 11 a.m. Thursday in McMinnville Funeral Home Chapel. Interment was in Crain Hill Cemetery.

McVey, died at her home in the Second District of this county, after a lingering illness, aged about 22 years, on Thursday, March 11, and was buried at Union, Saturday, March 13, funeral services being conducted by Rev.J.W. Cooley. She leaves a husband and infant daughter, besides her father and mother, Mr. James Best and wife. She was a niece of Messrs. J.M. and Jasper Bain of this place.

16th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry

16th Infantry Regiment was organized in June, 1861, at Camp Harris, Tennessee, with 952 officers and men. Its companies were drawn from the counties of DeKalb, Coffee, Warren, Putnam, and White. Sent to Virginia, the unit was active in Lee's Cheat Mountain Campaign and later moved to South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, then Kentucky. After fighting at Perryville, it was assigned to M.J. Wright's, Maney's, and Palmer's Brigade, Army of Tennessee. The regiment participated in the campaigns of the army from Murfreesboro to Atlanta, endured Hood's winter operations, and saw action in North Carolina. It reported 199 casualties at Perryville and lost fifty-two percent of the 402 engaged at Murfreesboro. Of the 242 at Chickamauga, twenty-eight percent were disabled and in December, 1863, it totalled 212 men and 157 arms. The unit surrendered on April 26, 1865. Its field officers were Colonels David M. Donnell and John H. Savage; Lieutenant Colonels Daniel T. Brown and Thomas B. Murray; and Majors Patrick H. Coffee, Henry H. Faulkner, Joseph Goodbar, and Ben. Randals.

The Battle of Perryville, also known as the Battle of Chaplin Hills, was fought on October 8, 1862, in the Chaplin Hills west of Perryville, Kentucky, as the culmination of the Confederate Heartland Offensive (Kentucky Campaign) during the American Civil War. Confederate Gen. Braxton Bragg's Army of Mississippi[5] won a tactical victory against primarily a single corps of Maj. Gen. Don Carlos Buell's Union Army of the Ohio. The battle is considered a strategic Union victory, sometimes called the Battle for Kentucky, since Bragg withdrew to Tennessee soon thereafter. The Union retained control of the critical border state of Kentucky for the remainder of the war.

On October 7, Buell's army, in pursuit of Bragg, converged on the small crossroads town of Perryville in three columns. Union forces first skirmished with Confederate cavalry on the Springfield Pike before the fighting became more general, on Peters Hill, when the Confederate infantry arrived. Both sides were desperate to get access to fresh water. The next day, at dawn, fighting began again around Peters Hill as a Union division advanced up the pike, halting just before the Confederate line. After noon, a Confederate division struck the Union left flank—the I Corps of Maj. Gen. Alexander M. McCook—and forced it to fall back. When more Confederate divisions joined the fray, the Union line made a stubborn stand, counterattacked, but finally fell back with some units routed.[6]

Buell, several miles behind the action, was unaware that a major battle was taking place and did not send any reserves to the front until late in the afternoon. The Union troops on the left flank, reinforced by two brigades, stabilized their line, and the Confederate attack sputtered to a halt. Later, three Confederate regiments assaulted the Union division on the Springfield Pike but were repulsed and fell back into Perryville. Union troops pursued, and skirmishing occurred in the streets until dark. By that time, Union reinforcements were threatening the Confederate left flank. Bragg, short of men and supplies, withdrew during the night, and continued the Confederate retreat by way of Cumberland Gap into East Tennessee.[6]

Considering the casualties related to the engaged strengths of the armies[2], the Battle of Perryville was one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War. It was the largest battle fought in the state of Kentucky.[7]

The tale is about his grandfather, James Thomas Hennessee, who at the young age of 10 or 12 walked back to Warren County,TN from Wright County,MO. It appears that Thomas was ailing and wanted to return his family to the his homeplace and sent son, James, in advance to ascertain that possiblity. James then returned to Missouri and Thomas & family returned to Warren County. Other family members tell me stories that James was head-strong and never gave an inch while teamstering, even when he had an empty load he would travel the middle of the road.

I cannot remember exactly, however I think my Dad told me stories of his grandfather running whiskey from the mountains. I once asked Dad about his grandfather, "Ol Jim" Hennessee and all he could remember was that they shared the same birthday. That irked him as he said the family paid attention to his grandfather and not him..DAH

James was a first cousin, once-removed, to his wife, Rachel.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF SHELLSFORD BAPTIST CHURCH

Shellsford Baptist Church is one of the oldest active congregations in Warren County, Tennessee.

Shellsford, located on the Collins River a short distance downstream from Buck Springs, was one of the earliest settlements in Warren County. The community got its name from the Shell family who settled here in the early 1800's near the ford of the river, hence the name Shellsford. James Shell established a grist mill at the Shellsford location, an exact date is not known. Shellsford, the old Shell mill, Buck Springs, and Shellsford Baptist Church became important in the history of early Warren County. Buck Springs, according to tradition, received its name as a result of the successful deer hunting of pioneer Jordan Sellars at the spring.

The Shellsford Baptist Church was originally known as the Buck Springs Baptist Church and was sometimes further identified by its location "on Collins River." The congregation was established in 1810 as a result of a brush arbor meeting held by Reverend William Thompson and Reverend George Stubblefield, prominent Baptist ministers of that era.

The original meeting house, built after the brush arbor meeting, was built of split logs. The church building consisted of one door, two windows and a fireplace. The first building stood until 1851 when it was replaced by a frame building. The present building was erected in 1947 and completed with the addition of a two story educational building in 1959.

There are many traditions linking the Hennessee Family to Missouri...while travelling in that state in a covered wagon the family was attacked by bandits and rescued by the JAMES Brothers. Frank and Jesse may have been former neighbors

(1). What is known for certain is that AJH met and married his wife in Warren County
(2). They moved to Sequatchie County (Dunlap) where he worked as a road boss. One day a worker threatened AJH whom he shot and killed. AJH soon fled to Canada (records have it that his son, Thomas, went Canada for a period of time) where he lived a number of years. Upon returning to Tennessee he lived briefly with his elderly wife on the poor farm where he died (3).

Alsa C. Yager was born in White Co, Tennessee, April the 6th, 1844, and came with her father's family to Wright Co about the year 1858.

She was united in the Holy bonds of matrimony with Eli Coday on the 18th of October 1860.

To this union was born twelve children, six boys and six girls, nine of which survive their Mother. The other three having passed on to their reward.

Those living are as follows: Calvin Coday, Seattle, Washington, Mrs. Andy Millsap, Exter, Cal, John, Hosie, Mrs James Coday and Malissa Coday, all of Mansfield, MO. Lon Coday, Mrs, Will Whitteker and Mrs. Emmett Quillen of Hartville, MO.

She had two brothers and one sister, Mr. Wesley Yager of Hartville, Mo, who passed on some years ago. Giddie Yager, and Mrs. James Dickerson of Oklahoma, yet survive.

She also had many grand-children and some great grand-children, and a host of relatives and friends.

She was converted to the Christian faith early in life, and became a member of the Christian Church to which she remained faithful to the end, October 24th, 1929 at Mansfield, Mo

Her husband who out-stripped her in this life passed on March 17, 1914 in Mansfield, Mo

"Thomas C. Hennessee is a son of G. C. and Sallie (Smith) Hennessee, of Warren County,Tenn. who emigrated to Wright County,MO., in 1842, where Thomas was born March 20, 1844. In 1863 the family moved to Arkansas and located in Lawrence County, where the father died in 1880. He served in the Confederate army through the war and was one of the raiders under Price during that general's daring exploits.

The family consisted of four sons and three daughters, who grew to mature years, of whom two brothers and three sisters are yet living. Thomas C. Hennessee remained with his father on the farm until the latter joined the Confederate army, in 1861. In 1862 he enlisted in the Second Missouri Battalion of Calvary, and served in that company until the close of the war. He was paroled and discharged at Shreveport,La., on May 10, 1865, and returned to his home in Lawrence County. During his career in the army Mr. Hennessee has, no doubt, seen about as much fighting , and also done fully as much as any soldier at that period.

He took part in the fights at Poison Springs, Marks' Mill, Jenkins' Ferry, and a great many skirmishes and fights of lesser note, but equally as hot as the predecessors. When he first joined the army, the battalion of which he was a member was composed of 476 men, and out of that number only seventy-four lived through the horrors of war to be paroled at its close. Mr. Hennessee received a gun-shot wound in one of his limbs, which disabled him for a time; and, on another occasion, was wounded by one of the guards, after being taken a prisoner, while walking over a log to cross a creek.

On December 21, 1815, he was married to Miss Levira Bagley, of Arkansas, and then settled to a farm life with his bride. He came on his present place in December, 1870, and has cleared up about 160 acres, and built a fair house, out buildings and all necessary adjuncts, besides a small orchard of well selected fruits. He also owns another farm of 187 acres, with about sixty acres cleared up and a comfortable house built upon it, owning altogether some 400 acres of rich bottom land, situated about five miles northwest of Walnut Ridge.

Mr. Hennessee was elected justice of Cache Township in 1874, and held the office continuously for twelve years. He is Democrat in politics, and a strong adherent to the principles and doctrines of his party. Both he and his wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church,South, and Mr. Hennessee is also a member of the Knights and Ladies of Homor. They have had five children born to them, all living. Their names are Martha, wife of J. S. Childers; Laura, wife of W. G. Duty, Joseph G., John H. and Sallie Anna. Mr. Hennessee started in life, after the war, without a dollar, and has accumulated his fine property by industry, economy and good mangagment , and is now one of Lawrence County's solid men and interprising citizens."

Services for John B. (sic John Drake) Hennessee, Comanche county pioneer, were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Lawton funeral home chapel. The Rev. Byron C. Smith, pastor of the Lutner Baptist church, officiated.
Mr. Hennessee, 75, died at 3 a.m. Friday at the home of his son, Raymond Hennessee in Saint Jo, Texas, where he had been visiting for two weeks. Born January 29, 1868, he came to Lawton in 1907 from Arlington, Texas. Here he made his home at 1001 "G" Street. A retired farmer and cotton buyer, he was a member of the Masonic and Odd Fellow lodges, and the Methodist church. Survivors are his son, one sister, Mrs. Lester Hayes of Houston, TX and nephews and nieces in Lawton. Music at the service was furnished by Mrs. Joyce Cothran, vocalist, accompanied by Mr. Smith at the organ.

Bearers were: John Cunningham, Sam Hennessee, Archie Rhodes, George Hennessee, Ernest Rhodes and Raymond Cunningham all nephews of Mr. Hennessee. Burial was in Pecan Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Lawton funeral home.

1910 Census Record indicates U. A. "Liss" and Callie were living in Lincoln Township, Comanche, Oklahoma and had two children living with them, Walter "Buster" who was 4 and Albert "Buck" who was just 16 months. Callie stated that she had given birth to two children and both of them were living. The Census also shows that Liss was a blacksmith and operated his own shop.

1920 Census Record indicates Ulysses "Liss" and Callie were living in Lawrence Township, Comanche, Oklahoma and had 6 children living with them, Walter "Buster" 12, Albert "Buck" 10, Archie 8, Ethel 6, Ruby 4 and Alma who was just 3. The Census shows they rented their home and Liss was a farmer. Archie was mistakenly listed as a daughter on this Census. Maybe they had so many kids running around they confused the Census taker.

1930 Census Record indicates Ulysses "Liss" and Callie were living in (Hinton) Quanah Township, Comanche, Oklahoma and had all 11 children living with them. Ulysses was 45 years old, Callie 40, Walter "Buster" 24, Albert "Buck" 21, Archie 19, Ethel 16, Ruby 13, Alma 12, Ray 10, Joe "Pod" 8, Charlie Leon 5, Laura Viola 3 and William "Bill" was just 4 months old. The Census much more information: They were renting their home and lived on a farm. Liss and Buck were farmers and Buster was a truck driver. Archie, Ethel, Ruby, Alma, Ray and Pod were in school in 1929. Buck and Buster were married but there is no mention of their wives living in the home. Unlike the 1920 Census...Archie was listed as a son and not a daughter.

The funeral services of L. A. Hennessey, who was killed Christmas night in South Pittsburg, were held at his home in Richard City Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 27 at 2 pm. The officiating minister was the Rev. T. L. Cox, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Atlanta, Ga, who was a close friend of Mr. Hennessey's.

Many friends gathered to pay a last tribute to Mr. Hennessey. Rev Cox spoke of his genial disposition and his ability to make and hold friends. A profusion of flowers from many friends bore evidence of his popularity. Special music was rendered.

The Knights of Pythias attended the services at the home in a body and accompanied the remains to Beene cemetery were interment was made.

The pallbearers were Elwood Shaw, Dr. J. L. Raulston, A. G. Morgan, Joe Guidi, James Heiskell and J. T. Mc Cabe.

Mr. Hennessey is survived by his wife, formerly Miss Sarah Jenkins, and by one daughter, Mary Frances; two brothers, Richard of Dallas, Texas' and Floyd, of California; one sister, Mrs. W. A. Merriman of Dunlap, Tennessee.

Among those from out of the city, coming for the funeral were Mrs. Hennessey's two sisters of Oklahoma, Mrs. R. F. Brittain and Mrs. W. Braittain; her sister in law, Mrs. H. L. Jenkins, of Chattanooga; Gene and Boulden Ladd of Chattanooga.

My grandmother, then my now 88 year old aunt has saved this page from the paper all those many years. My aunt, Jeanette Smith/Fowler/Leslie still talks about the morning they got the call about her uncle, Ewing W. Smith, was killed in this shootout. They lived in Atlanta and came up by car, to South Pittsburg. Her father, William Luther Smith was the brother of Ewing W. Smith. Also a cousin, who still survives and is in her eighties, Geneva "Sissie" Newton, lost her Grandmother's brother, George Washington "Wash" Coppinger.

Just because an event happened so very many years ago, doesn't mean that it's effects don't stay with those indirectly involved. This has affected my family since the day it happened.

Another cousin, James Parker, still has Ewing's shirt, tie and Tobacco pouch that he had on him, when he was killed that fateful night.They all have shotgun pellet holes and blood on them.

"Mrs. Millie Katherine Powell, widow of W.M.Powell, well known Warren county citizen, died at her home in the Smyrna community Friday morning at 5 o'clock. She suffered a heart attack an hour earlier and never rallied. Mrs. Powell was 79.

Funeral rites were held Sunday morning at 10 o'clock at the Smyrna Church of Christ. John W. High officiated and burial took place in the Smyrna cemetery.

A native of Warren county, Mrs. Powell was born August 13, 1870. She was daughter of James Hennessee and Rachel Ann Hennessee and was married to Mr. Powell, who died about 5 years ago.

Mrs. Powell was a member of the Church of Christ.

She is survived by four sons, James Powell, Jesse Powell, George Powell and Andy Powell, all of McMinnville; four daughters, Mrs. Martha Jones, Miss Rachel Mae Powell, Mrs. Bettie Cope and Mrs. Edna Taylor, all of McMinnville. Also five brothers, Jesse D. Word was received yesterday morning of the death in Detroit, Mich., of Jesse D. Hennessee, about 70. He had been residing in Michigan for about a year. The body will be returned her this afternoon and funeral services will be announced by High Funeral Home. Mr. Hennessee is the father of Mrs. Jim Byars, Mrs. Press Moore and Mrs. J.R. Lewis of McMinnville, and Jim Hennessee, Dallas and Bert Hennessee and Mrs. Bill Moss, all of Detroit.

Mr. Hennessee died Wednesday, July 23 at Detroit, Mich., where he had made his home for the past year.

Daddy D was a quiet and dignified man. As a young child, I didn't have the presence-of-mind to ask him about his life, come to think of it, what 6-year old child does? I do remember him as being very meticulous about his clothing - always cleaned and pressed. His white Stetson hat and cane. Later in life, those who knew him told me was a loving, gentle man. Wish I had conversed more with him...DAH

Shellsford Baptist Church is one of the oldest active congregations in Warren County, Tennessee.

Shellsford, located on the Collins River a short distance downstream from Buck Springs, was one of the earliest settlements in Warren County. The community got its name from the Shell family who settled here in the early 1800's near the ford of the river, hence the name Shellsford. James Shell established a grist mill at the Shellsford location, an exact date is not known. Shellsford, the old Shell mill, Buck Springs, and Shellsford Baptist Church became important in the history of early Warren County. Buck Springs, according to tradition, received its name as a result of the successful deer hunting of pioneer Jordan Sellars at the spring.

The Shellsford Baptist Church was originally known as the Buck Springs Baptist Church and was sometimes further identified by its location "on Collins River." The congregation was established in 1810 as a result of a Brush Arbor meeting held by Reverend William Thompson and Reverend George Stubblefield, prominent Baptist ministers of that era.

The original meeting house, built after the Brush Arbor meeting, was built of split logs. The church building consisted of one door, two windows and a fireplace. The first building stood until 1851 when it was replaced by a frame building. The present building was erected in 1947 and completed with the addition of a two story educational building in 1959.

Martha Bouldin Holt remembers him as "Uncle Ab". He was kind to children and always had candy or chewing gum for them. She also remembers "Aud" explaining his batchelorhood by telling Martha that "he couldn't marry Minnie Holland so he wasn't going to marry at all!". She married Jim Evans and had 6 children...DAH

Uncle Aud was quite a character. Whenever my Dad, Berth (1918-1985), and I were in McMinnville, we would always jump in the car and look for "Hennessees" - and there were a blue million of them!

Neither Dad nor I could really understand our relationship to the other Hennessees because of the many marriages enjoyed by the many Hennessee boys and the many half-brothers and sisters produced by their marital bliss. In point, my Dad's grandfather, James Hennessee (1846-1927), had two families totaling 16 children. We were never sure whether Uncle Aud, half-brother to my grandfather, Jesse, was really kin or only "half-kin". Nonetheless, Dad always spoke well of Uncle Aud and I was therefore anxious to meet him.

Trip after trip into the country looking for Aud invariably was met with, "Aud? Ya just missed him by 5 minutes! Where'd he go? Dunno...". After 30 years of missing him by 5 minutes and the passing of my father I gave up figuring that if my father couldn't find him - I never would.

A few years later, I went to the nursing home, in McMinnville, to visit my Aunt Georgie Newman Hennessee (1903-1988). Walking down the corridor I noticed a placard pointing to "Albert Hennessee". I wondered if this was "Aud" because Dad never knew his given name. In excited steps to his room I was fearing the "5 Minute Rule" and if he were there, what he would look like and if I could be sure that this was the phantom "Uncle Aud". I soon as I turned into the room and saw his bright blue eyes and prodigious proboscis there was no doubt that this man was a Hennessee like all the Hennessees I knew. I walked over to the bed and hugged him, joyous in the fact that I had finally found Aud and wishing Dad were there to share the great victory.

It would be further confirmed that this was, indeed, Aud Hennessee, because within ten minutes he had talked me out of a twenty-dollar bill...David Alden Hennessee.

AJH was born and grew up in Warren County, Tennessee.After the family moved to Sequatchie County he worked at several jobs and married his first wife.
They had three children together, but the marriage ended indivorce.

The subject and his second wife moved to Kentucky where he was employed as a coal miner.They returned to Tennessee and he was hired by the J.B. Hunt Stave Mill.
AJH eventually found a better job in Dunlap andmade arrangements to rent a house near his wife's maternal grandmother.

The Sunday night before they were to move in they attended services at the Church of God with the grandmother. The subject commented during theservice that he felt as if he were catching the flu.

He carried his daughter on his shoulders on the way home and stopped off to buy her some peanuts. Upon arriving home AJH went to bed because of aching joints and

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Methodist church for Mrs. Mary A Coday, 71, life long Wright county resident and long a prominent member of the Mansfield community, who died at her home here Saturday evening at 8 o'clock following a lingering illness. The Rev. C. A. Stephenson officiated and interment was in the Mansfield cemetery under direction of Steffe Funeral Home.

Mrs. Coday had been in declining health for several years and had been seriously ill for the past few weeks.

She was born in Wright county Sept. 11, 1868, the oldest daughter of a family of eleven children. She was married to the late Jas. K. P. Coday, who operated the Mansfield Drug Co. here for many years, Nov 3, 1889. Mr and Mrs Coday moved to Mansfield in 1890.

Her husband preceded her in death Feb 24, 1934. A daughter, Maude, also preceded her in death, Dec 1, 1918.

She had been a member of the Methodist church ever since she moved to Mansfield and had served on the official board of the church.

A large crowd gathered at the church to pay last tribute to the pioneer resident who was on of the last of the early residents of Mansfield.

Pallbearers at the services were Hadan Coday, Walter Coday, Oren Ballow, of this city and Paul McMahan, Evan McMahan and Alfred Pyatt of Seymour.

Mrs. Coday is survived by one son Ernest Coday of Seymour; a grandson Robert of this city; three brothers, Hosea Coday of Mansfield, John Coday of Mansfield, Calvin Coday of Seattle, Wash; and four sisters, Mrs. Andy Milsap of Mansfield, Mrs. Docia Whitaker of Hartville, Malissa Coday of Mansfield, and Mrs. E. V. Quillan of Norwood.

Unfortunately you’ve probably seen virtually all I know about Della’s family for the moment. I have been provided data from other researchers with much better information than I and in it Della has a brother named Jesse and a sister named Biatha and no others.

To start with, my Grandmothers name was Cerena (Serena?) Isabel Hennessee. My Grandpa's parents John and Cassia (Capshaw) Simpson lived in Rogersville,
Lauderdale Co. AL and my grandparents were married some where in "Middle Tennessee" and ended up in Pemiscot Co. MO by 1904 .

My father James Thomas Albert Simpson was born in 1904. One of my Aunts was a Della and one of my Uncles was an Alvin Lee.

I don't know the names of Cerena's parents or her siblings. Your places and dates made me think that maybe your Della and my Cerena (Serena?) Hennessee might have been sisters??
