    • Letter-excerpts written June 13, 1993, by Phyllis Pirtle Smith:

      "Dear David,

It is with a heart full of tears that I write to let you know we buried my brother, Jesse Pirtle, June 2, 1993, 10:00 a.m.

May 9 was Mother's Day and Jesse and his wife, Margaret, were with their 3 grown children and seven grand kids and had the noon meal together.

May 10 Jesse felt like he was taking the flu so asked Margartet to call his doctor for an appointment. No appointment was available for days so Margaret took Jesse to the emergency room at the hospital.

Through a cat-scan, the aneurysm in the aorta was detected. He had surgery at 1 p.m. and stayed on the respirator in ICU for 19 days until his death at noon time May 29.

We went to Olathe for Jesse's funeral. It was a hard thing to do but I'm so glad I did it. Jesse was put to rest in a navy blue casket in a beautiful cemetery, on the hillside with much grass and trees. But the best and most important part, he was a Christian, a truly born again Baptist..." [5]
