  • Notes
    • Muncie Carson Ray Cantrell, 87, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at I.U. Health Ball Memorial Hospital.

He was born on August 29, 1925 in McMinnville, Tennessee to Wil and Lou (Hennessee) Cantrell. Carson served in The United States Navy on the U.S.S. Strickland as the ship's barber.

After the Navy, Carson married Oda Belle Dudley and moved to Muncie, where he worked at Acme Lees. During his time at Acme Lees, Carson went to Barber School and graduated from the International Barber School of Indianapolis. In 1953 he opened his own shop on the south side of Muncie.

Cantrell's Barber Shop, the oldest traditional barber shop in Muncie, has served generations of customers, many becoming lifetime friends of Carson. His business story has been featured in the Chicago Tribune, along with numerous local newspaper articles.

Carson was very proud of his humble childhood. He shined shoes and sold newspapers on the streets of Chattanooga and at Camp Forest Army Base in Tullahoma, Tennessee. He did this to support his family. He would take great pride in describing himself as "Just an old hillbilly who worked hard and saved his money".

Carson was well connected "behind the scenes" in local politics. His support helped numerous candidates get elected throughout his fifty plus years behind his barber chair. His name proved to be a great reference for those seeking employment, and he was quick to help when he could.

Carson's main hobbies were running his business and visiting with his customers. He would always welcome the chance to have breakfast at Brunner's with his sons and grandchildren.

Carson was a fifty year member of the Muncie Masonic Lodge. Later in life Carson was proud to become a member of True Light Baptist Church. He looked forward to attending when his health allowed.

This gentle, caring, southern man was preceded in death by his parents; a younger sister, Shirley; his wife, Billie; the mother of his two sons, Oda Belle Cantrell and a grandson, Tyler Allyn Cantrell.

Surviving are his two sons, Rick Cantrell (wife, Kathy) of Muncie and Bruce Cantrell (wife, Jan) of Yorktown; granddaughters, Dorian Lucas (husband, Michael), Encinitas, California, Erin Cantrell of Muncie, Jamie Char of Muncie and one grandson, Bret Cantrell of Muncie; two great-grandsons, Finn and Charlie Lucas; other survivors include a step-daughter, Patty Nicholson (husband, Dave) of Yorktown; a step-son, Mike Dillie (wife, Jan) of Northglenn, Colorado; step-grandchildren, Nathan and Hillary; two brothers, Alton Cantrell (wife, Wanda) of Kenneth City, Florida and Ronald Griffith (wife, Helen) of Nashville, Tennessee.

Those who knew Carson respected his honesty, and his unique ability to relate to people. He had a kind and complimentary word for strangers and friends. Carson can be remembered as a guy with a quick wit and a great story teller.

Carson Cantrell, brother, dad, grandpa, great-grandpa and friend; you will be deeply missed.

The family would like to thank Carson's home healthcare aides, Karen, Tina, Susie and Gayle, the Oncology and Intensive Care units at I.U. Health and the staff at Westminster Village for their exceptional care. The family would also like to thank the barbers for their years of service and devoted friendship.

Services will be 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel with Pastor Dennis Trimble officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory Cemetery, north of Muncie with Military Rites by The United States Navy and the Veterans of Delaware County. [2]
