      W. H. Byars, 79, Church Leader, Buried Today

      W. H. Byars, 79, well known church leader and farmer of the Dibrell section, died Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock at the home of his eldest son, F.H. Byars in Sequatchie. He had been ill and confined to his bed for about seven months. Mr. Byars had resided at Dibrell for about forty years. He was the son of the late Elder P.G. Byars and Senie Byars, and his father was widely known as the founder of the New Bildad Primitive Baptist Church of which the deceased was a member.

He graduated from the old Smithville College in 1891 and married Miss Sara Ann Stevens of Dibrell in 1892. Survivors include his wife, three daughters, Mrs. Mary Lou Byrd of Jasper; Miss Jenny Woodward Byars of Murray Ky.; and Mrs. Turnmire B. Carrol of Hardin, Ark.; four sons, F. H. Byars of Sequatchie; Dr. Stevens Byars of Jasper; John Burns (Doc) Byars of Harrodsburg, Ky.; and the Rev. W. H. Byars Jr., of Palmer; also 13 grandchildren, four brothers, Joe and Poper Byars, Oklahoma, Floyd Byars, Calif., and P.G. Byars of McMinnville and one sister, Mrs. Mary Cantrell of Smithville.

David, I always appreciate how generous you are with sharing your info about our Byars line. However, there are a few things we differ in which I would like to point out.

First it seems most of the Wm. Harrell's children considered themselves born in Warren Co rather than DeKalb Co. I know Daddy said they were near the county line and their farm was often moved from county to county. They went to school at Bluff Springs, which is in Warren Co. They never moved from the farm on Isaac Adcock Road, just into a new house from the 2-room wood log-type house (which is still standing), the day Wm H. Jr. was born. DeKalb Co was formed 1836 so that was not the problem, just moving the boundaries.

Page 1 - Perry Green Byars, #699, occupation primitive Bapt Elder. He was a full time farmer also, and back then they only had church once a month. Married by P. G. Byars, Jr. I don't think so. He wasn't born yet. Perhaps it was P. G. Magness, or P. G. Potter.
I show Ascenith born 14th, not 18th, and died Oct 24th, 1913, not 25th. You added a note showing Ascenith may have married Isaac Adcock. Her sister, Laura Ann Potter (b. 1837), married Isaac Adcock. Please delete.

      I. Wm H Byars, SR, #726, I show married Mar. 10th, not 12th. Wife, Sarah Ann Stevens dau of Hoggett Goodloe Stevens. I know military records, etc. refer to that name, but Daddy always referred to him as "Papa Hockett" which was his real name. In your quote of his obit in the Southern Standard, it states he was son of Elder P.G.Byars...widely known as the FOUNDER of New Bildad Church. I don't think so, not at 9 yrs of age! New Bildad was formed in 1854 and PG was born 1845. Pls make a correction notation. He was not ordained until late 1886 or early 1887.

      B. Mary Lou Byars, #780, is buried in Pine Grove Cem in Marion Co, TN, as is her husband, Clayton Byrd.

      1. son Clayton Raymond Byrd, Jr, #20340, wife Betty Jo Graham died 25 Oct 1898 in Atlanta, GA, bur. in Marion Co, TN

You have omitted their dau. #3 Mary Claire Byrd, b. 14 Jan 1958, Jacksonville, FL, mar: Jul 11, 1981 Mark Alexander Duff, Knoxville, TN, 3 children

      C. Jenny Woodward Byars, #783, died Mar 11, 1985. Was also author of a published book, Letters From Pakistan, where she lived and worked several years. Buried Webb Cem. Bluff Springs, Warren Co, TN.

      D. Jimmie Turnmire Byars, #782, Please put quotes around "Turnmire" as I have never heard anyone refer to her as Jimmie, which makes me wonder who she was named for.
She was a twin to an infant who was buried at Potter-Magness Cem at Seven Springs.
Her husband Charles E. Carroll was born Carroll's Valley, Coffee Co, TN. He died 20 Aug 1945, not Jimmie. Bur. Walnut Grove Cem, Newport(one word), Ark. Occupation: Peridonist who treated gum diseases. Turnmire died 10 Nov 1988 in Oakland, CA and buried in Webb Cem, Bluff Springs, Warren Co, TN.

      1. Their son, Jimmy Byars Carroll's occupation is nuclear physicist. He married first
Barbara Ann Conner of Arcola, IL, 28 Dec 1956 . She was born 28 Aug 1934 and died 1966 in Hamburg, Germany. She was the Mother of his children. Then he married
Ann Berenson Wilson in Williamsburg, VA in 1968.

      E. Un-named twin Byars

      F. Lora Mae #6015, buried Pine Grove Cem, Jasper.

      ............

To be continued at a later date.

      Sue Byars Schumpf

P.S.--No I haven't phoned your Mother. Hope to have time soon.
