Notes |
- In addition to researching these three lines of mine from Warren Co. I am currently working on documenting the names/genealogies of their slaves, hoping to match names from wills and deeds to the slave schedules, then connecting them to the 1870 census.
Notes as follows:
There are three Evans slaveholders, my 2nd, 3rd and 4th great grandfathers.
1. Abraham Evans (1765-1848)
1860 slave schedules:
6 slaves: 4M<10, 1M10-23, 1F36-54.
The 1848 will lists slaves: Nathaniel, Jerry, Preston, King, Betsy and her son Vincent.
I have not been able to locate any of these in the 1870 census.
2. John Walter Evans (1797-1880)
In 1845 John purchased 2 male slaves Gabriel and Nelson, and 1 female Annick from Benjamin Layne of Coffee Co., TN.
In 1848 Abraham willed Nathaniel to John.
1850 slave schedules:
7 slaves: M53B, F41B, M21B, M11B, M9B, F6B, M1B
In 1851 John gifted a 21 yr. old male slave to daughter Mary Ann on her wedding. John later took him back after the slave threw Mary Ann down a well. John took him to Nashville and sold him for $15. It is unknown if this was Nathaniel. The Davidson Co. deeds are not indexed for the sale of slaves. I am still looking for the deed on microfilm.
1860 slave schedules:
10 slaves: M63B, F37B, M19B, M17B, F15B, F11B, F8B, M5B, M3B, F6/12B
3. James Dodson "Big Jim" Evans (1834-1891)
1860 slave schedules:
Slave Schedules:
8 slaves: M28B, F27B, F17B, F12B, F10B, M8B, F4B, M2B
John and son James are the only two Evans slave holders listed in 1860.
In the 1870 census there are 3 African American Evans family listings:
Descan Evans 22
Beldin Evans 25
Colvin Evans 8
Laura A Evans 5
Willie Evans 3
George B Evans 6/12
Willie Ramsey 33
Tarentun Bonner 18
George Evans 60
Rosetta Evans 50
Arthur Towles 60
Mary Towles 47
James Cantrell 20
John Webb 12
Frederic Brooks 26
Esther Evans 53 domestic servant
Laura Evans 12 domestic servant
Note: Esther and Laura are enumerated two families apart from James Evans and John Evans.
Hamilton Neal 57
Nancy Neal 43
John Neal 23
Eliza Neal 13
Nancy Neal 13
Hamilton Neal 9
Lula Neal 7
Hickman Neal 5
Pleasant Neal 4
Joseph Neal 1
Baby Neal 3/12
Hiram Evans 19 farm labor
I have been unable to prove connection between any of these Evans and James/John so far. John treated his slaves badly so it's possible they chose not to keep the Evans name or they left the area.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On the Bonner surname, Bonner is a collateral line but there is a Miles Bonner listed on the bond with John Evans when he purchased Nelson, Gabriel and Annick. The only African American with the first name of Nelson in 1870 is listed as Nelson Bonner so interested in any info on the descendants of Nelson Bonner to determine if this was the same Nelson.
Burgess Harrelson "Harrel" Byars (1779-1874), my 4th great grandfather
Harrel is the only listed Byars slave holder in 1860.
1860 slave schedules:
4 slaves: F52, M30, M26, F23
The 52 yr. old I believe was Jude Byars and the 23 yr. old Nancy Byars her daughter.
They last appear in 1880, Jude 72 and Nancy 39 in the home of Harrel's
daughter Mary Byars Fuston.
I have been able to trace them forward after 1880 or to identify the other 2.
If anyone has any info on any of these, would love to hear. If you are a descendant or know anyone that is, would love to hear from you. I don't live in Tenn. so I don't know if there are African American Evans, Byars or Bonners still in the area.
Permission to forward this post granted.
Thanks everyone,
Dianne
