      June 9, 1782, son NATHAN LOVELACE is born in Maryland to Barton Lovelace and Lucy-tombstone date. Some wondered if this date on his tombstone, erected by someone else was correct.

      August 1, 1785, ASA LOVELACE, son of Barton Lovelace was born VA, and the census info given by his son.

      Nathan and Asa Lovelace are buried in the Lovelace/McSwain Cemetery in western Cleveland County "Cemetery Survey Cleveland County Cemeteries" by Roy Brooks. Dates are from their grave markers.

      The records were in the Library of Virginia, microfilm, Halifax Co., Reel 88, General Index to Order Books, 1752-1900 Defendants L, p. o, 123
      John Compton and Barton Lovelace were accused of stealing William Abbott's horse in Halifax County, Virginia.
      The judges ruling: they should receive trial before the Honorable in General Court of the City of Richmond, Virginia, the first day of court in April. They were sent back to jail until such trial could be held. (probably either April of 1786 or April of 1787)

      No one had any records of Abraham Cantrell in Halifax, Virginia.

      No one gave any proof that Barton Lovelace drowned nor that it was other than word of mouth. One researcher had the information of the drowning from a source dating back to about 1990 and is now deceased.

      William Lovelace drowned in the Potomoc River.

      Boundaries:
      1753 Orange Co, NC bordered the area of VA that included Halifax County.
      By 1786 other counties had broken off of Orange but it still left the Cantrell family near Halifax County, Virginia.

      No one has found marriage records for Lucy Watson Lovelace and Abraham Cantrell (Capt.).

      ...after the Revolution, Abraham moved with his family on the waters of Buck Creek in Spartanburg County, SC where he was listed in the 1790 census.

      Abraham was born in the "big valley" (200 mile long Shenandoah Valley)of VA and moved with his parents in 1753 to NC. The same researcher reported that all of his (Abraham's) children by Lucy Watson Lovelace were born in South Carolina. His first two children reportedly were born in VA.

      Abraham's name appears on the pay roll of NC soldiers in the auditor's office at Raleigh, North Carolina. Tradition says that he was a Captain and this is probably true, as he received more pay than the other soldiers.

      He is listed under "Special Certificates paid into the Comtrolers".
      The second line shows Certificate #1574, granted by Bruce and Munter to Abraham Cantrel 9 August 1782 in the sum of l66 pounds.

      Several of the Lovelace's went to Rowan including the Charles Lovelace for whom it appears Barton Lovelace may hae been a stand-in in the Revolutionary War in Maryland.

      Abraham Cantrell's household, two sons over 16 (both of Abraham's by his first marriage would have been over 16), none of Lucy's would have been, two under 16.
