Biography
Joel was born about 1777 in Amelia Co., VA. He married (1) Elizabeth Hill (2) Celia Batten. Joel moved with brother Epps to Smith Co., TN (now DeKalb). He lived on Hales Branch in old 16th Dist. of DeKalb Co., TN. He was a land and slave owner; his occupation was farmer. He made his will on 5 Feb 1856 and presented to court on 1 Jul 1867. In his will he named his wife Celia, sons John M., Tilmon V.; daughters, Elizabeth A. Cheatham, Mary C. Martin, and Permelia Hayes. He also mentioned grandsons, Isaac Hill Hayes, son of Isaac H. and Permelia Hayes. He passed away about 1867 in DeKalb Co., TN.
