  • Notes
    • John was born about 1738. The place of birth and his parentage is unknown. He was a Revolutionary War soldier, R 10.736, enlisted South Carolina. He was in the SC area and listed on the 1779 census of the Old 96th District.

SPARTANBURG COUNTY, SC records (Equity Court, box 21, Pkg 3) tell us that John made a will dated 9 May 1813 and that it was presented to the court 5 July 1813. The witnesses of the will, were not able to attest to his being of sound mind, and the will was not proven.

His son-in-law, Nathan Byers, then requested to be administrator but Rebecca Turner, wife of the decedent, stepped up to claim the administratorship.

This will gave son, Nathan, a negro named Job and all his smith tools. To daughter, Sally, a negro named Sarah. All the rest to his wife, Rebecca, and after her death to be divided between all his children.

He named Joseph Price and Joshua Richards as his executors. Witnesses; Jesse Turner, Rachel Price and Robert Price. Appraisers of the estate were; Charles Hester, Joseph Price, Nathan Byers, Joseph Camp and Joshua Richards.

The estate was appraised and a sale of personal property was held. But the estate was vigorously disputed and not settled until after the death of Rebecca in 1836. [2]
    • In the Probate Court records of SRARTANBURG COUNTY (file 375 SC Archives) in the settlement of his mother's affiars, William's children are said to all live out of state and are named; Real Estate Papers of the Probate Court involve the sale of the property of Rebecca Turner after her death which took place before 17 October 1836. These papers showed the following information on John and Rebecca Turner's children:

      1. Samuel Turner deceased had 7 children: William Turner, John Turner, Mathias Turner, Elias Turner, James Turner, Samuel Turner, and Polly Price wife of Benjamin Price. All lived out of the State in 1836.

      2. William Turner deceased left 6 children: Jemimy Turner who married Jno. Parris; Polly married Henry Green/Gunn?; Rebecca married Mr. Starrs [may be Richard Stears]; Robert Turner; Elizabeth Turner; and William Turner. All lived out of the State in 1836.

      3. John Turner living in 1836 but out of state.
      4. Emily Byers wife of Nathan Byers.
      5. Ennice Price, a widow, "belongs to S.C.M.C."
      6. Jesse Turner deceased and heirs out of state.
      7. Henry Turner deceased and heirs out of state.
      8. Rachel Price a widow.
      9. Polly Price wife of Russell Price out of State.
      10. Nathan Turner an idiot out of state.

      11. Mathias Turner. A petition within the equity records showed the children of Mathias Turner who died in 1818 were:

William B. Turner, Davis Turner, Nancy Yarborough, Henry Turner, John Turner, Polly Phillips, Rebecca wife of John Campbell, Minerva wife of John Dauherty, Elizabeth Turner, and Anderson Turner.

      12. Sarah Turner. Died intestate in 1818. Estate Papers File
      #2036. Never married. [5]
    • Also: and I have no idea which is correct.... but I have your No. #15321 John Turner b. 1738 Ref that you show married to Rebecca McMehen I have him married to Rebekah Gimblett.

From there some of the information is combined.

Children are shared and will information is the same.

One record lists John Turner's birth as abt 1738 Spartanburg and the other b. 1765 Newton, South Carolina this one with a marriage to Rebekah Gimblett on 20 Apr 1790 in Chester South Carolina. [6]
