Surnames: Wilcher, Welcher, Wilsher, Preston, Gilley, Collins, Carter

Joseph Wilcher was married before Hannah Preston. Daniel Preston was the uncle of Hannah Preston Wilcher. She married Vaach Crabtree...his first name was pronounced Vaych. She died during the Civil War in Cannon County, TN and I have visited the cemetery where she is buried. Joseph and Hannah's oldest son William H. Wilcher (or William H Wilsher) had two sons by his first wife, both died without issue. From memory I think her name was Mary Cox, but I do have their marriage record and his married to Emeline "Emily" Gilley daughter of Edward Gilley and Mary Collins. I descend from William H Wilcher through his son John A Welcher who married first to Elizabeth Canzada Carter. Possibly we have corresponded before, if you are related to the Mounce family? I have copies of the inventories and some other records from both Ky and TN that I obtained many years ago. I believe our Wilcher family came out of Amherst Co, VA. David Travillion Bunton

      David,
I believe that we have corresponded at some time in the past, but I think it has been quite some time ago before I had information that my Wilcher line (actually my husband's line) descended from Joseph Wilcher and Hannah Preston. Our line was through their son, Charles Madison Wilcher m1 Mary Cox. It did appear to me from the estate paper of Joseph Wilcher that Hannah Preston was related to Daniel Preston m Susannah Luttrell, but I could not determine how they were related. Can you tell me the source for believing that he was her uncle? Do you know who her father was? So does your Wm. H. Wilcher fit into this family? Do you happen to remember the cemetery that Hannah Preston Wilcher-Crabtree was buried in and was it a marked grave? As you see, I still have many questions on this line. Any information that you might have on these early lines would be greatly appreciated.

      Thanks so much,
      Joan McKinley Williams

      Hello Joan.

I'm disappointed that we didn't speak yesterday as a telephone call is so much easier than keying long messages. I, too, have a WILCHER line and have done a lot of work on this family on their travels from Virginia to Warren & Cannon counties, Tennessee.

      David,
I think I got your e-mail address mixed up with David Bunton searching this line. So, excuse me for that error. However, perhaps you can answer some of the questions that I asked of him.

      Thank you,
      Joan Williams
