The family of Burton was seated for many centuries prior to 1460 at Richmond co York Sir Edward Burton for his services to the House of York in 14 battles had the singular houour of knight banneret conferred upon him by Edward IV in 1460 after the battle of St Albans Sir Edward settled at Longner co Salop and
from him descended his son Sir Robert Burton knt had the first grant of arms May 23 1478
his son Edward in Jocosa Coyney he d 1524 their
eldest son John in Elizabeth Poyner and d 1543
Edward his eldest son m Anne Madock he d 1558 and was buried in the garden at Longner
Thomas his eldest son succeeded at Longner where his descendants in the female line who have assumed the name and arms of Burton still remain
Edward the 2nd son of Edward of Longner was father of Thomas Burton of Bun craggy who settled in Ireland in 1610 and m Anne daughter of Thomas Shepherd of Bay cote co Hereford Esq from whom descended in the 4th degree Francis Burton Esq b Dec I 1696 representative in parliament for co Clare and a privy counsellor m Mary 3rd daughter of lieutenant general Henry Couyngham of Slane Castle and sister of Henry Earl Conyngham and d March 20 1743 leaving issue by her who d 1737 1 Francis Pierpoint 2 William of Slane Castle b 1733 teller of the exchequer vice admiral of Ulster governor of Donegal a privy counsellor and formerly a lieutenant colonel of the 12th regiment of drauoons d unm May 31 1796 Mary d unm 4 Alice m Sept 22 1743 Sir George Gore Bart and d April 23 1745
