  • Notes
    • I too am very much interested in both the Colson Heaths who were in Putnam Co GA. My line descends from the elder Colson thru his son Daniel born April 1810, Montgomery CO VA. (I strongly believe they are one and the same, but no proof,-- yet.)
I have researched records in both the GA state archives in Atlanta and in the C/H in Putnam County. The Sr. Colson has been very elusive, as well as his wife, Elizabeth Morris.

Here is the trail I have followed for Colson,Sr.
First of all, I got started on my search thru Georgia from a book, Southern Relatives, author Sadie Hammonds, 2 vols. I believe pub. in the 1960's. There are sections on Heaths of Virginia, in the Carolinas and in Georgia. The GA archives has this book. In tracking several of these families, I believe there are close relationships with our Colson, but missing are some of the links.

The earliest record so far of Colson, Sr. is in Hancock Co, GA Feb. 1801 and again Nov 1802. He was a purchaser at estate sales. The second sale, Thomas Heath was also a purchaser. He seems to be moving with this Thomas.

He buys land in Putnam Co GA 1810, first 40 acres which he sales back to the original owner, then in Dec 1810 he buys a 200 acre parcel in Putnam Co where he resides with his family until 1824 - 1826. At that time the widow, Elizabeth is paying the taxes. My GG grandfather Daniel first recorded in Campbell CO TN (later becomes Union Co TN) 1826, as witness to Conrad Sharp's will (the father-in-law of his older sister, Nancy). The family returned to TN around 1823 - 1825 as Nancy's eldest child is born abt 1824. The Sharp family had been in TN much earlier.

I, too, feel that there are strong relationships amongst the three families of Putnam Co, i.e. Colson, Thomas and William.
William's wife, Margaret, is agent for Colson's orphans in the GA 1832 Land Lottery.

Colson, Jr. and Jane Castleberry were both members of the Bent Creek Primitive Bapt. Church which is about three miles from the 200 acres that Colson, Sr. bought.

Rhoda Heath, a widow, was a charter member of the same church 1807 when the church was constituted. I have checked the small cemetery at the church but did not find any Heath burials there. There were several graves in a grown over area covered in poison ivy that we didn't get to inspect.

This church is located about 10 miles east of Eatonton, GA, the county seat of Putnam.

I have a little more info I am willing to share if you would like to contact me directly.
