- All Hallows-by-the-Tower, also previously dedicated to St. Mary the Virgin[1] and sometimes known as All Hallows Barking, is an ancient Anglican church on Byward Street in the City of London, overlooking the Tower of London.
Founded in 675, it is one of the oldest churches in London, and contains inside a 7th-century Saxon arch with recycled Roman tiles, the oldest surviving piece of church fabric in the city. (St. Pancras Parish Church in King's Cross has been a place of Christian worship since the sixth century.)

- about Kippax Plantation...
Kippax Plantation was located on the south bank of the Appomattox River in what is today the City of Hopewell in southeast Virginia . Kippax Plantation was the home of Colonel Robert Bolling (1646-1709). Bolling married Jane Rolfe , who was the granddaughter of Pocahontas and John Rolfe . Their only child, John Bolling was born at Kippax in 1676, and settled nearby at Cobbs Plantation, just west of Point of Rocks across the Appomattox River in what is now Chesterfield County . While Jane's father Thomas Rolfe (1615-1675) never lived at Kippax Plantation, it is believed that he was buried there.
Kippax Plantation is considered to be a well-preserved archaeological site that is also well documented. Archaeologist Donald W. Linebaugh , of the University of Kentucky , located the remains of Col. Bolling's house in Hopewell, Virginia in 2002.[3]

Notes |
- Colonel Robert Bolling (December 26, 1646 - July 17, 1709) was a wealthy early American settler planter and merchant. His Mother was Mary Carie, his father was John Bolling born 1615. He was named after his Grandfather Robert Bolling, his Grandmother was Anne Clarke.
Ancestry and early life[edit ]
Robert Bolling was the son of John and Mary (Clarke) Bolling. He was born at Tower Street, All Hallows Barking Parish, in London on December 26, 1646.[1] His father John, was one of the Bollings of Bolling Hall , near Bradford , England. Robert's ancestry could be traced to Robert Bolling, Esquire, who died in 1485 and was buried in the family vault in the church of Bradford.[2] On October 2, 1660, at the age of fourteen, Bolling arrived in the colony of Virginia .[1] In 1674, he married Thomas Rolfe 's daughter, Jane .[1] Their son John Bolling was born January 26, 1676.[3] Jane is said to have died shortly after the birth.[4][5]
John Bolling (January 26, 1676 – April 20, 1729) married Mary Kennon, daughter of Richard Kennon and Elizabeth Worsham, and they had six children.[6] He was an ancestor to First Ladies Edith Bolling Wilson and Nancy Reagan , as well as Senator John McCain and both President Bushes.
Second marriage and death[edit ]
In 1681, after his first wife died, Col. Bolling married his second wife Anne Stith,[7] daughter of John Drury and Jane (Gregory) Stith. They had the following nine children together.
Jane Bolling (b. 1682), died young.
Robert Bolling Jr. (1682-1749), married Anne Mary Cocke. Robert was the grandfather of Beverley Randolph , the eighth Governor of Virginia .[8]
Stith Bolling (1686-1727), married Elizabeth Hartwell.
Edward Bolling (1687-1720), married Ms. Slaughter.
Anne Bolling (1690-1750), married Robert Wynne.
Drury Bolling (1695-1726), married Elizabeth Meriwether.
Thomas Bolling (1697-1734).
Agnes Bolling (1700-1762), married Richard Kennon.
Molly Mary Bolling (b. 1702), married Andrew Baker.
The descendants of Robert Bolling's first marriage are sometimes referred to in family history forums as "Red Bollings" and the descendants of his second marriage as "White Bollings". His grandson Robert Bolling was one of the most prolific poets in colonial Virginia.
As a merchant and planter, Bolling acquired a large estate. He was colonel of the militia and was a member of the House of Burgesses from Charles City County in 1702.[1]
Robert Bolling died on July 17, 1709, and was buried on his plantation Kippax , in Prince George Co. , Virginia , where his tomb still stands. However, in 1858, his remains were removed from Kippax to the Bolling mausoleum at Blandford Cemetery in Petersburg, Virginia erected by his great grandson.
Archaeological record[edit ]
Archaeologist Donald W. Linebaugh , of the University of Kentucky , located the remains of Col. Bolling's house in Hopewell, Virginia in 2002.[9]
The Archaeological Conservancy is currently trying to buy the site of Kippax Plantation to protect it from development. Thomas Rolfe , the son of Pocahontas and Robert Bolling's father-in-law, is buried there. The Archaeological Conservancy is in the process of raising the $205,000 needed for the purchase.[10] [4]

- Colonel Robert Bolling (December 26, 1646 - July 17, 1709) was a wealthy early American settler, merchant and planter. He is the ancestor of many prominent individuals including Presidents George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush.
He was born on December 26, 1646 at Tower Street, All Hallows, Barking Parish, in London. He arrived in Virginia at the age of fourteen on October 2, 1660. In 1674, he married Jane Rolfe the granddaughter of Pocahontas. They had one child, John Bolling, born on January 26, 1676. His descendants, the only American descendants of Pocahontas, are termed the "Red Bollings". They include Edith Bolling, wife of U. S. President Woodrow Wilson and John Randolph of Roanoke. Jane died after one year of marriage.
In 1681, Col. Bolling married his second wife Anne Stith with whom he had many children, including Robert Bolling, Jr., who was born on January 25, 1682. Both Presidents Bush are descended from Robert Bolling, Jr.
In 1702 Bolling was a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses representing Charles City Co., in 1702. He died on July 17, 1709 and was buried at his plantation Kippax, in Prince George Co., Virginia, where his tomb still stands.
Bolling's remains were moved postumously to Blandford Cemetery in Petersburg, Virginia. [3]
- Robert Bolling of "Chellowe", Buckingham County, wrote in French, about 1764, "A Memoir of a Portion of the Bolling Family, of England and Virginia". It remained in manuscript until 1868, when a handsome edition, a translrtion, was published by the well kuown Virginia Antiquary, the late Thomas H. Wynne. Mr. Wynne added many notes and obtained the permission of Mr. Thomas Bolling, ower of a long series of Bolling portraits to have them photographed for reporduction.
The book contains the following portraits"
(1) Col. Robert Bolling, the emigrant;
(2) John Bolling, the son;
(3) Mary Kennon wife of John Bolling;
(4) John Bolling, Jr.;
(5) Elizabeth Blair, wife of John Bolling, Jr.;
(6) Thomas Bolling, son of John Jr.;
(7) Betty Gay, wife of Thomas Bolling;
(8) Richard Randolph, of "Curls";
(9) Jane Bolling, his wife;
(10) Richard Randolph, Jr., of "Curls";
(11) Ann Meade, his wife;
(12) William Bolling of "Bolling Hall";
(13) Mary Randolph, his wife;
(14) Anne Meade Bolling, daughter of William Bolling;
(15) Portrait of a minister called "Rev. Hugh Blair"; as there was no such person in Virginia, the subject of this portrait is no doubt Rev. James Blair, President of William and Mary College, and uncle of the wife of John Bolling, Jr.; (16) Judge John Robertson.
The originals of all these portraits, except the last, are now owned by Mr. Richard Bolling, who also has another portrait of Betty (Gay) Bolling, with two children; of a "Captain Bolling", of U.S. Senate or Thomas Bolling Robertson, of Louisiana, and of Richard and John Morris, of Hanover Co., VA.
All of Mr. Bollings portraits have for a number of years been loaned to the Virginia Historical Society. When Mr. Wynne, obtained permission to reproduce the portraits for publication, it is stated that he has very fine water-color copies made and these were photographed for his book.
A comparison shows that these portraits were admirably copied.
The photographic negatives of all of these portraits are now the property of Mr. H. P. Cooke, photographer, Richmond, Va. Other portraits of members of this branch of the Bolling family are in existance. [8]

Other Interesting Facts:
Robert Bolling was buried at Kippax, as was Jane, his first wife, and probably Anne Stith, his second wife, as well as other family members. Eventually, the family graveyard was left unattended. Robert Buckner Bolling, great grandson of Robert I, moved the remains of the succeeding male heirs only, to a newly built mausoleum at Blandford Cemetery. An article in the Hopewell News, dated July 23, 1943, stated that Thomas Rolfe, as well as his daughter, Jane Rolfe, were lying in unmarked graves at Kippax. Attorney and Mrs. Thomas Brown Robertson arranged with Dr. Hamilton James Eckenrode, Director of History and Archeological for the Virginian Antiquities to mark the graves before the site was lost for all time. The two markers can be seen about 100 feet to the east of where Bland Avenue ends and 25 feet from the side of the driveway.
