  • Notes
    • Found the will of Turner Roundtree. Written in 1797 in Union Co. SC named among his other children is his daughter Molly Blassingame. He LOANED her some slaves and stated that at her death the slaves and their increase were to be sold and divided between her children. Molly's husband Thomas Blassingame died and she married Larkin Venable.

In 1810 a marriage took place in Warren Co. KY between Nathan Byars and Elizabeth Blassingame. In the late 1870s a woman named Ura McWhorter Byars wrote a book "Exits and Entrants". In this book she called the man listed on the 1850 Lawrence Co. Ala L. Nathan Byars and said his wife was Elizabeth Womack. They even put a modern tombstone on an unmarked grave at Bald Knob Cemetery in Lawrence Co. Ala. The mans name was engraved as L. Nathan Byars born 1795 and his wife Elizabeth Womack. So it's engraved in stone and it's wrong.

In 1846 a man in Miss. sued Molly Venable aka Molly Blassingame and won a considerable amount.

In 1849 Mrs. E. Foote and her husband sued Molly Venable her mother and her brother Robert Blassingame in Chancery Court. The suit was brought because some of the slaves had been sold. A copy of Turner Roundtree's will and a copy of the court case is in the Lawrence County Alabama Archives in Moulton, Ala. It names all nine children, seven sons and two daughters. One of the daughters formerly Elizabeth Blanssingame the wife of Nathan Byars was a complainent in the case. So we have proof that I have been looking for for 30 years.

My direct line is through Harrell Byars who married Nancy Tackett.

When I got a copy of the original marriage license from Lawrence Co. Ala attached to it was a note written and signed by Nathan Byars giving permission for his son Harrell to marry Nancy Tackett. Documented proof disputes what is carved in stone. How do we get people to look further for documentation? There is a tree on Ancestry that gives the children of Thomas Blassingame and Thomas Blassingame and Molly Roundtree to a William Blassingame. We all need to keep looking for more than just a census. Yes the census is wonderful, but it is not always correct and we need more prooof than just a census.

I rest my case. Clovis Byars Herring.
