- Biography
John Sparkman Sr. is thought to have been born in England in 1680, but no one is sure about the date. During his first years in the U.S., he lived in Isle of Wight, Virginia where he was a tobacco farmer with 640 acres. Some years later he sold his land in Virginia and moved to Chowan City, Bertie County, North Carolina. John Sr. signed a will on April 19, 1725 and died after April 19, 1728 in Chowan City, Bertie County, North Carolina. His will was probated on Oct. 8, 1728
Last Will & Testament of John Sparkman Sr.
In the name of God Amen the 19th day of April in the year of our Lord 1725. John Sparkman Senior of Chowan Precinct. Being sick and weak of body but of sound and perfect memory, praise be to God for the same, and knowing the uncertainty of this life on earth and being desirous to settle things in order, do make this my last will and testament in manner and form following, that is to say first and principally to commend my Soul to Almighty God, believing that I shall receive pardon for all my sins and be saved through the precious death of my blessed Savior, Christ Jesus and my body to the earth from which it was taken and as touching such worldly estate as the Lord in this mercy hath lent me, my will and meaning in the same shall be employed and bestowed as near after as this my will is expressed, and first I do revoke, renounce, frustrate and make void all wills by me formerly and declare and appoint this my last will and testament.
I give and bequeath to my son, John Sparkman, one half of a certain piece of land lying and being upon the Likin Root Branch, purchased from Henry Hakley being fifty acres or less.
I will and give and bequeath unto my grandson, Stephen Sparkman and son, Thomas Sparkman, the other half of said parcel of land aforementioned being fifty acres more or less as the line all ready marked them and their heirs lawfully begotten of their bodies forever.
I also give to my son, James Sparkman, all the cattle and hogs of the mark, that I gave to my son James Sparkman and their increase.
I also give to my son, John Sparkman, one cow and a calf.
I also leave to my son, Richard Sparkman, two cows and calves and all the hogs that was commonly called his and I also give to my son, William Sparkman and my daughter Sarah Sparkman and my daughter Mary Sparkman, two cows and calves apiece and that my son, William Sparkman shall have all the hogs that was called his.
I do appoint and ordain my son, John Sparkman, and John Green as Executors after all debts being paid, I give unto my sons and daughters, Richard, William, Sarah and Mary Sparkman, all my moveable estate, to be equally divided amongst the, all as witness my hand ye day above.
