David, In my research I am coming to believe that Thomas Rowe Hale's father was Benjamin Hale and not John Hale married to Mary Underhill. This belief is based on DNA from several descendants of Thomas Rowe Hale. The Haplogroup is different for John Hale than the descendants of Thomas Rowe Hale and Benjamin Hale is showing up in the same Haplogroup. John Hale Descendants are in a different Haplogroup. I have been in communication with several of the DNA contributors on the Hale Project with FTDNA.Com and there is a growing concensus that Thomas Hale's father was Benjamin Hale who was Son of Thomas Hale out of York Pennsylvania in Warrington Township. Have you done any research on the Hale family out of York PA? There has to be a connection to the Hale's of Baltimore but I have not found it yet. What do you know here and what is your opinion.

    • 24 Sep 2011 Thomas Hale is a Patriot...

Thomas Hale (Revolutionary War) was born in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. The seven children of John Haile were born while the family lived in Virginia. Hannah, the oldest, was born about 1748, Robert in 1750, William, who served in Rev. War with Thomas, was born in 1752, and Sometimes around 1759 John Haile moved his family to Rowan County, North Carolina. Thomas and William Hale went to school with Lawrence Thompson, son of Captain John Thompson. At the time of the Rev. War, Lawrence Thompson was a Lieutenant under whom Thomas and William Hale enlisted.

Thomas and William enlisted in Orange County, NC, a neighboring county where John Haile (their father) had later moved, following his second marriage in Feb. 1775.

Thomas Hale was seventeen when he left home to fight in the Rev. War. According to his military service record, he was enlisted in September, 1775 as a private in Orange County, NC by Lawrence Thompson, a Lieutenant in Captain Alfred Moore's Company and 1st Regiment of Provincial Troops. His military service is detailed in the book "The Hale Family of Virginia" by Esther V. Bartlett, which was taken from his own testimony from a court schedule of 22 October, 1823, in Franklin Co., VA. The military service record of Thomas Hale is preserved in the National Archives, Washington, D.C. under Rev. War Pensions, File Number S-37,975, Certificate Number 6857. Thomas's brother, William Hale, also made application for a Rev. War Pension, his file number is S-1522. In an earlier court schedule dated 3 Jul 1821, he testified that he owned a tract of land containing ninety acres more or less valued at ninety-six dollars.

After the Rev. War, Thomas Hale was engaged in farming in Rowan County, NC from 1780 to 1800. He and Rachel were the parents of two sons, William and Francis. They names the sons for Thomas's older brother, William, and for their wealthy uncle, Francis Haile, of Bedford Co., VA.

Thomas's wife, Rachel Sheridan, died in Rowan County, NC, and he married on 6 Nov 1801, Nancy Wood in Rowan Co., NC. Shortly after their marriage, Thomas and Nancy moved to Southwest VA. He selected a tract of land on Runnet Bag Creek in Franklin Co. From a land transaction recorded in Franklin Co., (Rocky Mount) VA, Deed Book No. 4, p. 576, proof is established that Thomas Hale and his two sons, William and Francis, each bought 96 acres of land on Runnet Bag Creek on 10 Mar 1804, from John Via, Jr.. All three deed were witnessed by Dennis Sheridan (probable brother of Rachel Sheridan).

Thomas Hale and his second wife, Nancy Wood, were parents of eight children, five sons and three daughters. They were born on the family farm on Runnet Bag Creek, Franklin Co., VA.
Thomas Hale and his wife, Nancy Wood had five (5) more sons not listed on the family page. Their names are unknown at this time, but his court statement when seeking Rev. War pension tells of these sons.

This is headed "Death Certificates...Pennsylvania" but is clearly the testimony of our Thomas Hale attempting to get his Revolutationary War pension. His sister Hannah Gillespie testified on his behalf in court in Franklin County VA. He apparently lost his mustering documents and was illiterate so had a very difficult time proving his claim. Fortunately Congressman Claiborne exerted some pressure on the War Department and Thomas Rowe Hale was given his just reward. The hearing was conducted in Rocky Mount, then as now the county seat of Franklin County VA.

I hope this will be of use to you.

Note that at least once, if not twice, was he declared ineligible.
