Notes |
- SHREVEPORT, LA - Robert L. Hennessee, child of God and Minister of Word and Sacrament in the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America, died Wednesday, June 20th in Shreveport, Louisiana. A Service of Witness to the Resurrection will be held at First Presbyterian Church, Shreveport, Louisiana on Monday, June 25th at 11:00 a.m. Seminary classmates Robert Bruce, Pastor of First Presbyterian Church, Mount Airy, NC, and Howard Gordon, Pastor of First Presbyterian Church, Little Rock, AR, will officiate along with Robert Laha, Senior Pastor of First Presbyterian Church, Shreveport. Following the Service the family will welcome friends in the Dining Room at First Presbyterian Church. Interment will be at 1:00 p.m. at Forest Park Cemetery, St. Vincent Avenue. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 24th at Rose-Neath Funeral Home on Marshall Street in Shreveport.
The Reverend Dr. Hennessee was born June 14, 1931 in Waukegan, Illinois. His mother, Elise, and father, Charles M. preceded him in death. He is survived by his loving wife of 18 years, Simone, Executive Director of the Providence House Ministry in Shreveport; and by four children, Debbie Hennessee and husband Jae of North Augusta, SC, Tammie Meadows and husband Glenn of Augusta, GA, Robert Hennessee, Jr. and wife Kathryn of Birmingham, AL, Brenda Tengel and husband Mark of Charlotte, NC; five granddaughters, Krystal Meadows, Megan and Ryan Tengel, Karoline and Kaitlyn Hennessee; and brother, Ronnie Hennessee and wife Flo of Phoenix, AZ; and stepsister, Jean Lucille Allen of Louisville, KY; and a host of very special friends too many to name but not forgotten.
Pallbearers will be Jerry Sayres, Leonard Selber, Bob Schaff, Chuck Strickland, Joe Shyne, Bob Plummer, Harry McCain, and Chuck Moffet. Honorary pallbearers will be the Session St. Andrew Presbyterian Church.
The Hennessee family expresses its appreciation to a wide circle of friends and church members who have loved and supported us during Bob's illness, especially the Board of Directors and staff of Providence House, Willis Knighton Medical Center and Hospice of Louisiana, Charlotte and Bob Schaff, Harry McCain, Leonard and MaryAnne Selber, Ben and Julia Claire Land, Jerry and Jean Sayres, Drs. Patti and Mike Brannan, Dr. Michael Aura, Dr. Michael Moore, Dr. Lane Rosen and their staff.
Bob is remembered by his family and friends as an unusually able preacher, a student of the Reformed and Presbyterian tradition, a staunch ally and formidable foe, and a committed friend. He was a member of Pines Presbytery and was a faithful Presbyter and servant of the church in the most important senses of the words: that he loved God and neighbor, that he was an apt student of scripture and theology, that he had little pretense nor tolerated it in others. Bob served churches in Alabama, Virginia, North Carolina, Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana - and he had a particular affinity for mission work in Chile. Quite ill for a number of months Bob continued preaching almost to the end of his life and everyone who heard or read those sermons were stuck by their power and truth.
Bob's childhood of relative poverty and service in the U.S. Army and his experience in corporate sales with U.S. Steel, combined with his biblical scholarship, made him a particularly effective witness with a wide variety of people. His love of good food and drink and travel and strong debate were well known, as a matter of fact, the expression "he would argue with a fence post" could have been coined about Bob.
As a staunch supporter of his wife's ministry with homeless families, Bob requested that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the Robert Hennessee Education Fund of Providence House, 814 Cotton, Shreveport, LA 71101. This fund for education of homeless families was established in Bob's honor by a close family friend and Elder in the St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, where Bob finished his ministry.
Bob was privileged to plan his service of Witness to the Resurrection that will make extensive use of the Psalms. Now, for him, the promise of God is true, as in Isaac Watts' paraphrase of part of Psalm 23:
The sure provisions of my God attend me all my days; O may your house be my abode, and all my work be praise. There would I find a settled rest, while others go and come; No more a stranger, or a guest, but like a child at home. [2]

Hey cuz,
How are you doing? Hope things are well your way. I just wanted to let you know that I saw on Tammy's (Hennessee) facebook page that her father passed away this morning. I thought you might want to update your records. Also, I have found some of Charles Moses' descendants and I am trying to find out some more info not only on him but also on my great grandfather. Gloria, daughter of Charles Moses has said that James Robert had jumped off the bridge into the Little Calamut River (in South Chicago) and said it was in the 50s because she was a young teenager. This she had her daughter tell me. I am hoping to get to talk to her myself one day. They aren't very receptive it seems. I also have spoken to the ex wife of Robert LeRoy Hennessee (Marjorie McWaters) and she also confirmed hearing about James jumping to his death while he was drunk (no surprise there). I am also in contact with their daughter Tammie Hennessee Meadows. She seems much more friendly and open. I think she is going to try to talk to her uncle Ronald Kent (son of Charles Moses) who is still living. Nobody said if James was intentionally trying to commit suicide or just doing something stupid but I would guess the former (although I don't know obviously). I am trying to see if I can get in touch with Ronald Kent but no luck yet. I did pass your email address along to a few of the relatives. I will let you know if I find anything else out!
Love,
Stef [5]
