He was a son of Amos Fanning Alexander and Betty Luther Alexander. He married Eliza Williams.
In 1930, the Alexanders lived with their daughter Lucy and her husband, Henry Hennessee, and grandchildren Alexander, Bennett, and Walter. He was working as an attendant / fireman at the State Hospital. In 1940, Robert and Eliza Alexander were living on East View Avenue, Morganton. He was a storekeeper.
He died at age 85 of an aortic aneurysm.
