James Moore of Bertie County, North Carolina and Pendleton District, South Carolina, and Van Buren County, Tennessee 1762 – 1849
    • The research of Robert T. Strong Jr, and others, traces this James Moore back to Bertie County, North Carolina. Since my research traces Onwin Moore back to that county as well, there is hope of establishing a connection.

Since Mr. Strong copyrighted his web site posting and the web site is gone, I cannot reprint what he wrote but I will note where he differs from my findings.

JAMES MOORE b. 22 December 1762 in Bertie County, North Carolina, d. 11 February 1849 in Van Buren County, Tennessee. (Van Buren formed from White County in 1840.) He was a lieutenant in the Revolution and applied for a pension in 1841 in White County. He resided in Cumberland County, North Carolina, after the war (his father died in Bertie County) then went to Pendleton District “about 20 years” then to White County, Tennessee for “24 or 25 years” prior to his 1841pension. Roughly, he arrived in Pendleton before 1795.

Since he met and married his wife in Pendleton District and they had a son born 1793-1795, he must have arrived by 1793. The will of his father-in-law, dated 1 September 1794, proves he was married by that date. However, the SC census data is missing a son who appears in the will of James Moore, so he may have had a first marriage in North Carolina or a son after leaving South Carolina.

The 1800 census indicates he had 4 children under 10, which again makes a marriage date of 1792/3 reasonable.

His father-in-law had lands in Wilkes County, Georgia and appears on the tax lists there as well prior to 1800.

The wife of James Moore was Agnes Findley, b.1765-1775 , d. 10 March 1849

in Van Buren County, Tennessee. She was the daughter of Samuel Findley,

      b. PA d. Oct 1794 – Jan 1795. His will, dated in September and proven 24

January 1795 establishes this as his death date (the district court was not in session from mid October to mid January).

Samuel Findley migrated from York or Chester County, PA as part of the “Presbyterian migration” of 1760 or so (by way of central NC). He resided in the Laurens District (or the lower part of the 96 District) before going up into Pendleton. He is listed on p.82 of the 1790 census of Pendleton County, close to other Finleys and to Edwin Smith, who witnessed his will.

1 September 1794. Will of Samuel Findley Sr. (Pendleton Co., now Anderson Co.

SC). Wife: Anna Findley. Sons: John, Samuel, Alexander (youngest). Daughters:

Mary Bowen, Agnes Moore (youngest daughter), Elizabeth Findley, Margaret Findley,

Jane Findley. Executors: wife Anna Findley & Richard Hall. Witnesses: Robert

Sloan, Edwin Smith, Daniel C. Cook. Probated: 24 Jan 1795.

Agnes Findley was the wife of James Moore (1762 – 1849).

James Moore age at this time was 32 years, married to Agnes Moore (youngest daughter).

The Doyles and Moores moved together to White County, Tennessee c.1814

Thomas Moore married Sarah Doyle, also descended from a Pennsylvania Presbyterian family.

7 September 1789. John Hunnicutt receives grant of land on 26 Mile Creek which will be owned by JAMES MOORE. See 15 Jun 1802, 26 Jan 1818.

1 August 1805. John Morrow to JAMES MOORE, both of Pendleton District, SC. For $600 Morrow transfers to MOORE 227 acres on 26 Mile Creek which were part of a grant to John Hunnicutt on 7 Sep 1789, then conveyed to Morrow by Sheriffs sale. Witnesses: Thomas Walker, ONWIN MOORE. Recorded 14 October 1806. See 15 Jun 1802, 12 Feb 1805.

James Moore gets this land at market price, implying that there is no family relationship to John Morrow. His witnesses, though, he would want to be close to him, which is why Onwin Moore seems to be related to David Moore (see 12 Feb 1805 above) and James Moore. Thomas Walker’s connection is unknown. When James Moore sold this land 26 Jan 1818 he also got market price: $700.

26 January 1818. JAMES MOOR to Daniel Green. For $700 paid by Daniel Green transfer is made of 227 acres on 26 Mile Creek. Part of land granted to John Hunnicutt 7 Sep 1789. Witnesses: EDWARD MOORE, Thomas Smith. Recorded 13 October 1818. See 1 Aug 1805

James Moore is on his way to Tennessee with his family. His nephew Edward Moore is his witness. This is James Moore’s last entry in Pendleton District. Daniel Green, 51 b.SC, in Forsyth Co, GA 1850 with wife Catherine 45 b.SC. (Brother of Curtis Green & Rebecca Moore of Floyd (not Forsyth) Co, GA. See Lazarus Moore.)

      James Moore (1762-1849) a Presbyterian?

Agnes Findley came from a Pennsylvania Presbyterian family. Thomas Moore married Sarah Doyle, also descended from a Pennsylvania Presbyterian family.

The Doyles and Moores moved together to White County, Tennessee c.1814. No need to make too much of it, but keep the Presbyterian connection in mind as a clue to the Moore ancestry.

Bob Strong’s 1998 article on JAMES MOORE is under the heading “NINTH GENERATION” but Strong himself was not positive about the ancestry of

James Moore in another 1998 posting on Rootsweb

James MOORE also served in the Revolution as a soldier from Cumberland County. He was born about 1762, possibly in Bertie Co., NC, but place of birth is uncertain. He served a six month tour with the Cumberland County militia, being discharged as a Lt. in 1781. After his military service he went briefly to Bertie Co., NC, where his father was then residing. He returned to Cumberland County after about 18 months, remaining in Cumberland County until about 1794, when he relocated to Pendleton District, SC. About 1816, he relocated again to White County, Tennessee, where he resided in the portion of that county that became Van Buren County. In 1841 he filed his pension application from Van Buren County. As yet the parents and siblings of James MOORE have not been identified. On the 1790 census of Fayetteville town there was a James MOORE who appeared to have 10 children and 15 slaves. This Moore family does not seem to be consistent with the 1800 census of my James MOORE family in Pendleton District, SC, which had only four children, all born after 1790. I will be most gratefull for any assistance received about persons named James MOORE who resided in Cumberland County, NC, before 1800.

Refer back to the 1790 census and locate Samuel Finley. Note that he is located between the two Robert Moores. Whoever these two are, James Moore must have landed with them in upper Pendleton District (what became Oconee County) before getting land on 26 Mile Creek in what became Anderson County. Granted, it is only several miles difference.
    • Charting JAMES MOORE (1762 –1849) in the census data:

1790 : no reliable sighting, although the following is interesting:

      p.43 Moore County, North Carolina: Moore, James 1 - 0 - 1 - 0 - 1

      1800 Pendleton District , South Carolina p.29 :
      Moore, James 1 0 0 1 0 - 3 0 0 1 0 - 0 1

      1 male < 10 (Thomas) 3 females < 10
(Note the slave in 1790, 1800. Not enough to prove the 1790 listing is him, but it’s interesting.)

      1 female < 10

Four sons, four daughters, but the will names 5 sons, 3 daughters.
Have to assume a son b.1810 after the census, and a daughter who d.bef.1820 leaving no issue.

      son b.c.1805 (1810, 1820, 1830 gone in 1840, back 1850) David

      son b.c.1810/1 (1820, 1830, 1840) “10” in 1820 Edward
Although not perfect, it is a “best fit” . The first two could be switched as to birth year. They were both listed as 16-24 in 1810, but the daughter was
gone by 1820. The son was 26-44 in 1820, putting him in the 1793/4 birth range twice. Robert T. Strong Jr. lists the children in this order: Thomas,
Edward, Elizabeth, Winny, William, David, Mary Ann, John, and a possible Sarah. Locating David in 1850 and 1860, and Edward in 1880 makes the
      above plotting more plausible.
      The Augusta County, Virginia Connection

The Presbyterian Migration, aka the Scotch-Irish Migration, from Chester and York Counties, Pennsylvania, proceeded down the flank of the Allegheny

Ridge, then the Blue Ridge, finding good land in the Shenandoah Valley. They formed a settlement then a county: Augusta. Many pioneers and future leaders of America passed through the Shenandoah Valley. A large clan of Moores fourished in August County. I call it the ALEXANDER MOORE clan though he appears to be with Andrew, James, John, William and David. All six served in the 1742 militia. From what little I know of these Moores, Alexander and David were brothers. A Quinton Moore b.c.1717 in Ireland, joined them and was an heir of Andrew Moore (will 1748).

Some of these Moores came to South Carolina and are found in the Pendleton District. In fact, there are several good reasons to believe that the main Moore characters of this report trace back to Augusta County.

Even JAMES MOORE b.1762 in Bertie County, NC can be constructed to fit a migration c.1757 from the frontier to the safer agricultural counties to the east. In this way, his father would be a “free radical” in Bertie County among the old-family Moores that came from Nansemond and Isle of Wight, Virginia. In favor of this would be his hints of Presbyterian roots (see above) and his propensity to plunge back into the frontier while the “old family” Moores were more likely to build on their heritage in the more prosperous eastern counties. Another hint is that the Augusta County pioneers were later prone to live among (and sometimes marry) the Cherokee.

In my studies of Cherokee genealogy I find that post-Revolution mixed marriages involve either Tories (children born before 1790) or Irish immigrants/Scotch-Irish (often from western Virginia) (children born after 1790). My direct ancestor, Colonel Robert Love (1760-1845) of western North Carolina, was born in Augusta County. I get Cherokee blood through him as well as through the Moores. (He captured and kept some Cherokee as slaves in the punitive raids of 1788, setting all but one (who was badly injured and needed care) free.) (Col. Love opposed the forced removal of the Cherokee in 1835 and ignored the fugitives hiding among his hundreds of thousands of acres in the Smoky Mountains.)

The “Scotch-Irish” names of Robert, David, Alexander, Andrew, Samuel, Agnes and Margaret figure into our lines of Moores. In short, it is worth considering the possible link to Augusta County. An online version of Lyman Chalkley’s amazing collection of these records is at : <http://www.rootsweb.com/~chalkley/>

By 1780 these settlers were in Rockbridge, Tazewell, Russell, Montgomery Counties in Virginia.

Charting DAVID MOORE (d.1830) in the census data:
1790 : no reliable sighting, although the following is possible:
      p.44 Moore County, North Carolina: Moore, David 1 - 1 - 1 - 0 - 0
This puts him close to ONWIN MOORE and a young JAMES MOORE.
Plus, it helps to solve a mystery – a missing son.
      1800 Pendleton District , South Carolina p.29 :
      Moore, David 2 1 0 1 0 - 1 0 1 0 0 - 0 0
      1 male 25-44 (David) 1 female 16-25 (wife Sarah)
      1 male 10-15 (Eli) 1 females < 10 (Lydia)
      2 males < 10 (Edward, Robert)

He is listed very close to JAMES MOORE (1762-1849) in upper Pendleton District, where Oconee County now is. Notice the son b.bef.1790. The fact that James and David are located in upper Pendleton then down to 26 Mile Creek at the same time indicates a family relationship. The male b. bef. 1790 indicated by the 1800 listing (and 1790 if you accept it) is accounted for below but it does challenge a long-held theory on where and when he met his wife.

Was James Moore a brother of DAVID MOORE?
There is enough circumstantial evidence to say that James Moore and David Moore are related, at least as cousins if not as brothers. But the evidence is not strong enough to be conclusive.

James had sons David and Edward; David had sons James and Edward. But neither followed traditional naming patterns: James named his three eldest sons Thomas, William, John; David named his three eldest Eli, Edward, Robert. The father-in-law of James was Samuel, and his wife had brothers Samuel, Alexander and John. The father-in-law of David was Edward, and his wife had brothers John and Edward.
    • While there is no proof that James and David Moore were brothers, a schematic for either that does not account for the other would be unsatisfactory.

Was Onwin Moore a brother of DAVID MOORE?

There seems to be a stronger connection between Onwin Moore and David Moore than between James Moore and David Moore. And there seems to be a stronger connection between Onwin Moore and James Moore than between James Moore and David Moore.

In other words, there is good reason to believe that Onwin was a brother of James and/or that Onwin was a brother of David, but the connection between James and David does not seem as strong.

Until more data is discovered, the connection cannot be proven. But, as with James, a schematic for David that does not account for Onwin would be unsatisfactory.

Maybe it was this David Moore served on both sides during the Revolution. James Seaborn is shown here as a possible clue to the Seaborn Moore name. On 14 May 1785 James Seaborn surveyed land in 96 District which on 5 June 1786 was granted to HUGH MOORE, then of Abbeville County, later of Spartanburg. (Recorded in Spartanburg.) Hugh Moore also bought land with William Young (above). Samuel Hamby m. Elizabeth O’Bryant, a half sister of Lazarus Moore, whose brothers Thomas and James Moore are shown above.

Notes on the Pendleton 1790 census Moores:

[1] ROBERT MOORE “SR.” & ROBERT MOORE “JR.”

It is interesting that they do not use “Sr.” and “Jr.”. They are located in the 23 Mile Creek area (what would become Anderson County) and among people

who intermarried with the Cherokee. Robert Moore “Jr.” is listed between

David Gentry and Alexander Drumgoole, both of whom had Cherokee families and became members of the tribe. Could Robert “Jr.” be JAMES MOORE, who is about to marry a daughter of Samuel Findley (listed close to the older Robert Moore)? Or is James Moore one of the males over 16 in the older Robert Moore’s household? Or is he listed in Moore Co, NC?

Robert Moore “Sr.” is listed close to Robert King Sr. (b.c.1740 d.c.1837 Anderson County, SC) who is listed in the 1790 census of Chatham County,

NC. (The SC census was taken in 1791 and much of the NC census was reconstructed from tax lists of the 1780’s. It is not uncommon to find people

on both rolls.) The Kings had land in Wilkes County, GA as did the Moores.

Robert King was born in England or Ireland.

The census shows 2 Robert Moores and 1 John Moore in the 26 Mile Creek area but the land records do not reflect these names. (I only copied half the records.)

      Possible Relatives in Tennessee?

[8] AARON MOORE. This is the older Aaron Moore of Pendleton District. We refer to him as Aaron Moore Sr. of 1790. (See “Three Aaron Moores of Pendleton District” in Part Five.) This AARON MOORE went to Tennessee c.1810.

A “younger old” AARON MOORE was b.c.1779 d.3 May 1857 Pickens District, SC, and was from Laurens District, SC. (He was the father of EMORY MOORE.)

Aaron Moore Jr. b.c.1790 m. Elizabeth Jane Tally and is the son of the older Aaron Moore who went to Tennessee.

      1. Aaron Moore Sr. of 1790

Aaron Moore Sr. was in the area by 1790 but went to Tennessee before

the 1810 census. His census data makes him a candidate to be the

      father of Sarah Moore b.1791.

It also suggests he was b.1745-1755. Still producing children in the 1790’s and vigorous enough to move to the frontier by 1810, sliding the probable birth date to 1750-1755, or c.1750 for now.

21 August 1797. William Hutton of Abbeville Co, 96 District, SC to AARON

MOORE of Pendleton Co, SC. For Ή 60 Hutton transferred to MOORE some

453 acres on Shoal Creek of the Keowee River near the Great Falls. The land

was granted to Hutton 7 Jan 1793. Witnesses: John Queal, Elizabeth McKinley.

Power of attorney for William Hutton granted to Samuel Dickson.

20 October 1806. AARON MOORE to Jacob Reese, both of Pendleton District,

SC. Moore conveys to Reese for $500 150 acres on a branch of the Keowee

River. Witnesses: Daniel Bain, Jacob Wolfe.

30 July 1811. AARON MOORE of Franklin Co, TN, formerly of Pendleton District,

appoints Jeptha Norton power of attorney to sell land on Keowee River.

16 August 1813. AARON MOORE of Franklin Co, TN, to Frederick Davidson of

Pendleton District, SC. Moore sells to Davidson for $300 the land on Shoal Creek

branch of Keowee River near the Great Falls, containing about 200 acres, being part

of a grant to William Hutton on 7 Jan 1793; also 100 acres that were part of a grant

to McFew. Bounded by Aaron Moore, Jacob Reece, Abraham Pence, Charles

Dohan, William Rose. (Recorded in Franklin Co., Tennessee.)
