      Generation No. 1

      1. MATHIAS4 HARMON (CUTLIFF3, GEORGE ADAM2, JOHANNE MICHAEL1 HERMANN) was born 1772 in North Carolina. He married SALLY SHEETS Bet. 1790 - 1794 in North Carolina. She was born Bet. 1770 - 1774 in North Carolina (Ashe County?).

      Notes for MATHIAS HARMON:
Mathias moved to Indiana, but as his son Cutliff was born in Kentucky, I venture to say he went to Indiana via Kentucky and may have resided there for a time.

Per the Washington Census of Land and Wills, Mathias was appointed Guardian of Lewis, Elizabeth, John and Esther Townsend.

There are several Mathias Harmon, and unsure if this is the same the Mathias Harmon, who he and his brother John established a Hunting Camp in far eastern Ky. near the present town of Paintsville and it was called Harmon's Station. It was used as a camp for the likes of Daniel Boone and others as a base from which they ventured forth on great hunting trips into the "Dark and Bloody Ground of Kaintuck". It lasted thruogh the last years of the 18th Century until Kentucky became a seperate area of it's own and was severed from Virginia's control. Around the same time the State of West Virginia was established and soon after wards Kentucky became a State in it's own right.Much History has been recorded of our Countries developement and it is amazing to me the amount of participation of a people named ,[in one form or another ] "Harmon/Harman who were involved in the major Civilizing of what we now call"The South Eastern United States of America". One very good reason we Harmon/Harmans have to celebrate the 4th of July,1776-2006. 230 Years of Freedom and we Harmon/Harmans have been involved every step of the way.

Description: In Maj. Gen. Kirby Smith's 1862 Confederate offensive into Kentucky, Brig. Gen. Patrick R. Cleburne led the advance with Col. John S. Scott's cavalry out in front.

The Rebel cavalry, while moving north from Big Hill on the road to Richmond, Kentucky, on August 29, encountered Union troopers and began skirmishing.

After noon, Union artillery and infantry joined the fray, forcing the Confederate cavalry to retreat to Big Hill. At that time, Brig. Gen. Mahlon D. Manson, who commanded Union forces in the area, ordered a brigade to march to Rogersville, toward the Rebels. Fighting for the day stopped after pursuing Union forces briefly skirmished with Cleburne's men in late afternoon.

That night, Manson informed his superior, Maj. Gen. William Nelson, of his situation, and he ordered another brigade to be ready to march in support, when required. Kirby Smith ordered Cleburne to attack in the morning and promised to hurry reinforcements (Churchill's division).

Cleburne started early, marching north, passed through Kinston, dispersed Union skirmishers, and approached Manson's battle line near Zion Church. As the day progressed, additional troops joined both sides. Following an artillery duel, the battle began, and after a concerted Rebel attack on the Union right, the Yankees gave way.

Retreating into Rogersville, the Yankees made another futile stand at their old bivouac. By now, Smith and Nelson had arrived and taken command of their respective armies.

Nelson rallied some troops in the cemetery outside Richmond, but they were routed. Nelson and some men escaped but the Rebels captured approximately 4,000 Yankees. The way north was open.
      Result(s): Confederate victory

In Camp at Davis' Mill, Miss., November 19th, 1862, Excerpt from letter of a soldier..
The country hereabouts is in a high state of culture. For miles around, immense plantations of cotton and tobacco loom up n every direction; in fact, so thickly are these products cultivated around here that it is difficult to obtain camping grounds, without locating on an immense field of cotton, and you can readily believe that ploughed ground does not make a very pleasant camp, especially in inclement weather. Most of the cotton around here is yet unpicked. Gen. Grant has, however, taken measures for the collection of all contrabands in his department, who are to be organized and placed under command of Chaplain J. Eaton, Jr., of the 27th Ohio, for the purpose of collecting and baling the same.
