Early Families of N. C., Counties of Rockingham and stokes with Revolutionary Service. As a resident of Guilford County, North Carolina, Winkfield Shropshire served in Capt. Richard Vernon's Company of Light Horse Cavalry in October 1781, under Col. John Paisley. (Capt. Richard Vernon's list of Men in this company, National Archives, Washington, D. C.) Winkfield Shropshire was issed Revolutionary War pay voucher #1595 for three pouds 5 shillings for Public Claims on 9 August 1782, State of North Carolina, Salisbury District by Auditors Charles Bruce and James Hunter. Ref: Revolutionary War Accounts, North Carolina Divisions of Archives and Records, Raleigh, North Carolina. Added by James Rea Aug 9, 2016.
Winkfield Shropshire was granted 100 acres of land in Guilford County on the North Fork of Buffalow Island Creek adjoining Gustavos Hill 22 October 1782. (Guilford County Deed Vol. 2 (B), page 383). This land was in the section the became Rockingham County in 1785. He moved about 1792 to Greene County, Georgia; then about 1806 moved to that part of White County, Tennessee that became Franklin County. His will is recorded there in Will Book 1808-1876, pages 17-18. Added by James Rea Aug 9, 2016.
