      Adam was married twice, his first wife, believed to be named Anna B., dying about 1840. His second wife Jane Raulston/Rawlston had two children already when she married Adam. The Will of Adam Thomas is in Knox Co. Archives, Estate Book 12, pages 98, 121,129, & 360. The Will was dated 12 October 1850 and filed in February 1855. John Brakebill was named as executor and presumed to be his daughter, Ann's husband.

      KNOXVILLE EAST TENNESSEE 15 December 1820 Land Grant No. 787

      IT IS HEREBY CERTIFIED THAT ADAM THOMAS, of ______ did, on the 15th day of December 1820, purchase the Lot or North East quarter of Section Twenty Two in __________ Township, number TWO, Range number TWO East in the HIWASSEE DISTRICT A which Lot or Quarter Section is estimated at, One Hundred Sixty Acres of Land which has been sold to the said ADAM THOMAS at the rate of Two dollars and no cents per acre, amounting in the whole to Three Hundred and Twenty Dollars and no cents, of which there has been paid agreeable to law to the Treasurer of East Tennessee. Eighty Dollars and no cents, being the one forth part of the purchase money for said Lot or Quarter Section.
      Now the remaining balance being Two Hundred and Forty Dollars and no cents, shall be paid to the Treasurer of East Tennessee at Knoxville, at or before the end of ten years from this date with interest commencing on one third at the expiration of two years, on one third at the end of four years and on one third at the end of six years, which interest is to be paid annually; the amount paid becomes forfeited if the said balance is not paid; but if it should be duly paid, the said ADAM THOMAS, or his assignee or legal representative shall be entitled to a grant for the Lot or Quarter Section above described.

      LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF ADAM THOMAS, SR.

      of Knox County, Tennessee

      An instrument in writing pertaining to be the last Will and Testament o f Adam Thomas, deceased, and Richard Keyhill and Benjamin Hackney, Gordon Desam, Subscribing Witnesse s thereto appearing in open Court, acknowledge that they saw Adam Thomas sign the said Will by makin g his mark and heard him acknowledge the same to be his last Will and Testament, the same thereupo n ordered to be admitted to Court.

      Know all men by these present that I, Adam Thomas of the County of Knox a nd State of Tennessee being of sound mind and disposing memory, enjoying tolerable good health being far advanced in years and knowing the uncertainty of life and earthy affairs, I do hereby make and Publis h this my Last Will and Testament to wit----.

      First, my Will is that all my funeral expenses and just debt be paid ou t of monies or property that I may have at the time of my death.

      Second, my will is that my beloved wife Jane shall have and enjoy fifty acres of land adjoining the lands of Jacob Thomas, heir and the land of Wm. Brown, James Crew and others. Said land having been granted by the State of Tennessee to me and dated the 4th day of March 1825, and als o two hundred dollars in cash to be expended in building of a house and lot and necessary improvements on said land as she may think fit and if she does not choose to spend said money enterly [entirely] on said land she may use it otherwise at her option, it is also my will that she have and enjoy two feather beds, unde rbeds and bed steads, and each bed to have one couterpen, two quilts, and one sheet, and as many articles as is now exempt from Executors for the benefit of heads of family and to her illegitimate son Jerry Rawlston , my will is that at the death of my wife Jane that he enjoy the said land forever, and that my Executor retain in his hands one hundred dollars to be expended in the support or schooling said child, or in any other lawfu l way, that said Executors may think best now if my wife Jane shall desent [dissent] from this my last Will an d Testament, then it is my Will that she only enjoy as the law may form to do and nothing else and as for Jerr y her son she will have to provide for him herself and the fifty acres of land shall be sold to the highes t bidder on a credit of twelve months but if she agrees to this my Will in that my plantation on which I now live and joining the land of C. N. Baker, Wilson, S. Enudle and others, may also be sold for cash on a twelve month credit after having given them three months notice of sale, but if my wife Jane should disent [dissent ] from said will then my will is that said land be sold reserving to her, her lifetime estate to one third of t he Home place. I also with that all personal property be exposed to sale on the above mentioned terms.

      And for my children my Will is as follows;

      To my deceased daughter Peggy Carpenter I wish her heir to enjoy all that their mother could of alive, to be equal with the rest of my children, the word above used as Peggy Carpenter heirs.

      I wish to be understood as to apply to all the living children and to by [my] daughte r Polly Doyle. I will that she receive an equal part with all the rest of my children and then to divide equally with her two sons Thomas and John so that each one may have one third of Polly’s part,

      and to Amy Breakbil l I likewise wish her to receive equal part with the rest. Also my son Henry to receive equally with the rest of my children,

      and to Caty Doyle I will to receive equal with the rest of my children,

      and to Susannah Walker I will equal with the rest and to Sally Davenport I wish her a equal part on and with the rest.

      Now the word equal with the rest. I wish to be understood to mean an equal portion of cash whatever amount that may be left in the hands of my Executor, weather [whether] by sale of land as in cash in hand, money in Bank to be paid over by said Executor soon as possible after my death as in lawful sale and collect th e money owed --

      but as to Adam Thomas, my son I will him five dollars in cash as he has already got all that I believe I owe him, and to the heir of my son Jacob Thomas, deceased to his two children each one dollar.

      And Lastly I do hereby constitute my dear friend and son in law John Breakbill, my Executor of this my Last Will and Testament, hereby keeping all other.

      12th day of October, One Thousand Eight Hundred and Fifty (1850)

      Whereas, at our County Court held for the County Knox, at the Court Hous e in Knoxville on the 1st Monday, February 1855 it appeared to the Court that Adam Thomas, late of said County had died having first made his Last Will and Testament, in Which John Breakbill is appointed Executor. It was ordered that Letter, Testament any issue known ? We therefore impower the said John Breakbill to take unto his possession all and singular the goods and chattel rights and Credits of t he said Testator. Wheresoever the same, may be found, and all Just Debts, Debts of said Testator, and all the Legacies specified in said Will, will and duly to pay. So far as the said goods and Chattel, rights and Credits may extend and in all things to administer said goods and chattel, rights and Credits according to the terms of said Will and the law of the Land.
