      Hi Bruce,

I don't have a marriage date for Hiram Sr. and Mary Lewis (1804-1870) but based on their children I would assume it was in the early 1820s. I also don't know who Mary Lewis' parents were.

Hiram Sr. was the son of William Childress (1762-1839) and Charity "Seroone." Charity's surname comes from my g-g-g-grandmother, Elizabeth Robinson Gracy, during an interview back in the 1920s with Viola Simrell Greenwood. Supposedly Charity was Cherokee, but it seems like every Tennessee family has a legend of Native American ancestry.

William and Charity's children were (at least):
      Susannah Childress (1786-1869)
      Sally Childress
      Elizabeth Childress
      Hiram Childress Sr. (ca1800-1883-ish)

Susannah Childress married John Robinson; they were Elizabeth Robinson Gracy's parents.

As for sources, at this point I'm sourced out. LOL! For years Mrs. Greenwood's research was considered The Source as far as Robinson/Childress information, and I've verified much of her work with probate documents and Census records. However we've found some flaws in her research: for instance, the person who was supposedly John Robinson's father, an elder John, did not mention a son "John" in his well. So there's the possibility that she misunderstood or misinterpreted what Grandma Gracy told her about the elder generations (Grandma Gracy was, after all, close to 100 at the time).

So now I'm back to plugging away at old White County records, searching for clues.

      Dean
