Unclear in family what happened to Winifred and Abe. Winifred is on the 1910 Census. Abe does not appear in the 1920 Census. Both are listed with birthdates in a family bible. The bible does not list death dates for anyone, nor does it contain the names of anyone other than William, Mary, and their seven children.
William’s parents James and Bettie are present in Obion for the 1870, 1880, 1900 and 1910 Census. In the 1900 Census their son David is residing with them. William and Mary are residing in the next dwelling. (His name was reversed to Dodson William.)
On the other side of James Dodson resides Fannie Forbes who will later marry their son David Goodall Dodson. In 1910 Mary and William are no longer there, but have been replaced in the next dwelling by David and his wife Fannie.
William and Mary’s last child is born in Obion in 1907. The family leaves Obion, TN around 1910 for Crowville, LA. They have not been found in any 1910 Census. William Chambers Dodson dies in Crowville in 1913. His wife is alone on the farm with her children in the 1920 Census (Mary is listed as Bettie on this Census, all ages and children can be matched correctly. This is not her mother-in-law, also called “Bettie” at times.
Living separately in Crowville in the 1920 Census are William’s parents James R. and Bettie Dodson.
Bettie (wife of James R.) dies in Crowville in 1924. It is unknown what happens to James after the 1920 Census.
Mary Lester Dodson marries Alvin P. Brown before the 1930 Census. He and his children live on the farm with Mary and her grandchild Woody R. Hill (son of Mabel) who she raises. Mary and Alvin separate after some years. Mary dies in Crowville in 1940.
Sometime after their marriage in 1931, Mabel Dodson Hill returns to live on the farm with her second husband Walter Chachere. They are there by themselves on the 1940 Census. Woody R. Hill’s wife and children live on the farm for the 1957-58 school year while he has Navy sea duty. (Shirley Hill is one of the children.)
Walter Chachere dies in 1958. He and Mabel have no children together. Mabel continues to live alone on the farm until she dies in 1968. The farm was then sold. Woody R. Hill died in 1976.

I have additional info on the children, grandchildren and great-grand children of William and Mary Dodson. To my knowledge none will carry the name Dodson forward. I also info on the spouse and children of William’s sister Florence and brother David.
Mary Lester Dodson remains a mystery. I have no middle initial for her or any ancestors. I have been unable to link her to any other Lesters. None of the Mary Lesters I find turn out to be my Mary. My DNA match links me to other Lester DNA people. I have tried to determine the significance of Mary and William naming a son Abe Crittendon Dodson. There are plenty of Crittendons and Lesters in Obion at that time, but I can’t link to any of them.
