    • Billy and Hazel Hennessee

Billy was a dedicated father and grandfather. He highly treasured his children and grandchildren.

He was a passionate bird hunter which was in the Hennessee genes. Billy's bird dogs were extremely important to him. His love of quail hunting was a close rival to his love of family. He also thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of horse training and riding. He developed many friendships from his enjoyment of horses. Billy also loved working in his vegetable garden. He prided himself on having a beautiful, large garden, which provided many a family Sunday dinner for everyone. Neighbors and passer-biers on Hwy 58 often commented on Billy's garden and how they looked forward to seeing the results of all his hard labor.

Billy retired from Volunteer Electric Cooperative as a foreman of the line crew. Many funny stories occurred while he was working that Billy shared with the family. One particular line crewman, Jimmy W., was a real jokester and often pulled many funny situations out of the work day. The line crew were working out of town in a rural area and had to travel across a farmer's land to arrive at a work station. Billy gave Jimmy instructions to go ahead of the crew to inform the farmer that the foreman would be arriving soon with the line crew and Mr. Hennessee would give the farmer further details. Jimmy explained to the farmer that the foreman, Billy Hennessee, was extremely hard of hearing, almost deaf, and in speaking to Billy that he would need to talk very loudly. Upon Billy's arrival, the farmer said “HELLO” to Billy, almost yelling at him. Billy noticed that the farmer was speaking in such a loud tone, and decided that he must have a hearing problem. Therefore Billy introduced himself and continued to converse in a very loud voice. The farmer in turn continued to speak in very loud tones, which both of them were actually yelling at each other, as Billy discussed just where the line crew would be working and the access they would need through the farmer's land. Just a short distance away, all the crew knew what had transpired earlier with Jimmy's prank, and the entire crew were finally breaking out in laughter. After Billy pulled away and caught up with the crew, Billy remarked as to what in the world were they all laughing about anyway? Then Jimmy W. had to confess to the joke. Everyone, including Billy, had a big laugh as he reminded the crew to get back to work.

Hazel always had a true passion for music and gospel singing. She was always noted in the gospel singing arenas as the best alto singer around with a quality God-given talent. Hazel sang with the Decatur Quartet for many years, and traveled to many churches and conventions, as well as singing at many funerals on request. She also owned a Beauty Shop in downtown Decatur for many years, which she greatly enjoyed. After she retired as a hair dresser, she pursued a music degree and graduated from Cleveland State. Hazel also taught piano lessons for a few years from her home to area young people, who loved her dearly.

Hazel's family has always been a priority to her, and she spent every Sunday preparing meals for the famous Sunday dinner at Granny Hazel's house, to bring everyone together.

Funny story : Billy bought a bird dog from a man and the dog's name was Hazel. As any good bird hunter knows, you must train and reprimand all bird dogs with a firm hand. Hazel, the bird dog, had a bad habit of barking and howling during the night. Billy would open the bedroom window and yell out, “hush up Hazel, get back in there and hush.” The boys would listen from their bedroom and cringe thinking the neighbors must be hearing, and what would they think? Everyone in the family knew how important a dog's name is and there would be no changing of this name. We're sure this happened after much consideration, and Hazel reminding Billy of how loud his voice is and how it would carry to the neighbors; one day, without any discussion, the dog was sold. [3]
