    • Per great-granddaughter, Linda Hennessee Taylor;

      "The first group of anecdotes concerns Patrick Alexander Hennessee (1838-1917) of White County. My information comes from his granddaughter, Ora Hennessee Cooper (1892-1979), the daughter of James Robert Hennessee (1872-1965). Ora told me Patrick was lazy and mean. He seldom worked. When he needed money, he would sell some of the land he inherited and his wife's property after they were married.

      Ora said he would sit by the fire and chew tobacco. He would spit it in the clean floor so his wife would have to clean it again. Once when Ora was staying with her grandparents, Patrick started fussing at her about something unimportant. Ora got so angry she told him, "If you don't hush I am going to throw this skillet of hot grease in your face." Patrick didn't bother her after this incident. Ora would become angry when telling the story.

      The meanest thing Ora remembered Patrick doing involved her brother William Clayton (1806-1918). Clayton was staying with his grandparents one cold winter. Patrick found fault with the way Clayton had built the morning fire. He threatened to beat Clayton with his cane. Clayton was so scared he left the house and ran about a mile to his other grandparents' house even though there was snow on the ground and he was barefoot. Grandmother Sarah Stone Wilhite was furious with Patrick. According to Ora, Patrick was not well thought of by anyone. Ora was blunt and plain spoken."

      Editor's Note: I interviewed Bula Simpson Bradley, 87, granddaughter of Patrick, in June of 1991. She told similar tales about her grandfather in that he was mean and ornery. As a child Bula would avoid Patrick and his cane at all possible costs...DAH.
