Notes |
- The Powell Family
Mary Reynolds, daughter of Henry Reynolds, of Greenwich, England or Weymouth (in the county of Dorset), born October 12, 1812, died April 13, 1899, married John Willian Powell, June 23, 1833. He died October 1, 1838. They had two (2) sons, John W., II and Henry. After John W., I, died in England, Granny Powell married Robert Sargeant on May 3, 1845 and they all came to America to live.
They left England in 1845 or 1846 and landed in America around 1850. The story as told, storms blew the sailboat back and forth so that it took over 18 months for them to reach America. As the boat started to leave going back to England their dog ran back on the boat and went back with it. Nothing else is know about their life until they came to the Cumberland Mountains of Tennessee in Sequatchie County, then to Powell Point on the mountain.
Granny Sargeant's first husband, John W. Powell was buried in the Family Vault or Crypt in Rotherrithe Church yard near London. Their names were Family Names as were Father and Grandfather were before him. Her name, Mary, was from way back also.
The Powell name is Welch. John William, II and Henry were born in Bristol, England. John is on record at the Episcopal Church that he was baptized at the age of 6 weeks. Grandpa Powell had a sister named Mary and she married James Strutts. He was Hatter (made hats). He would be called a milliner now.
Grandma Powell Sargeant had a sister Naomi, who married James Corbett and they had a daughter named Eliza M. Tillbrook in England and had lots of money as told. It's been told that Granny Sargeant was disinherited because she married a commoner as they were called in England, or a man from the lower class, or beneath her.
Granny Sargeant's second husband (Grandpa Sargeant) is buried at Liberty Cemetery near Viola. She is buried at Smyrna Cemetery. Granny had heart dropsy.
John and Henry were both in the Civil War. Emma Turner McGregor remembered her grandpa John telling about riding horses in the war. He was wounded in the war in June 1862, while riding on a train. John was six (6) year old and Henry was four (4) when they landed in New York from England.
