41501 Saint Olga (Church Slavonic: ?????, died 969 AD in Kiev) was a regent of Kievan Rus' for her son Svyatoslav from 945 until 960. She is known for her obliteration of the Drevlians, a tribe that had killed her husband Igor of Kiev. Even though it would be her grandson Vladimir that would convert the entire nation to Christianity, for her efforts to spread Christianity through the Rus' Olga is venerated as a saint. While her birthdate is unknown, it could be as early as AD 890 and as late as 5 June 925.[1]

Eastern Orthodoxy
Feast July 11/24

Early life
Olga was reportedly from Pskov. The Primary Chronicle gives 879 as her date of birth, which is unlikely, given the birth of her only son probably some 65 years after that date. She was, hypothetically, of Varangian extraction.

She married the future Igor of Kiev arguably in 903, but perhaps as early as 901-902.

Regency
After Igor's death on 945, Olga ruled Kievan Rus as regent on behalf of their son Svyatoslav.[2]

In 947, Princess Olga launched a punitive expedition against the tribal elites between the Luga and the Msta River.[3] Following this successful campaign, a number of forts were erected at Olga’s orders. One of them is supposed to be Gorodets in the Luga region[4] a fortification dated to the middle of the 10th century. Because of its isolated location, Gorodets does not seem to have been in any way associated with the pre-existing settlement pattern. Moreover, the fort produced another example of square timber frames designed to consolidate the rampart that was seen at Rurikovo Gorodische. The same building technique was in use a century later in the Novgorod fortifications.

Olga remained regent ruler of Kievan Rus with the support of the army and her people. She changed the system of tribute gathering (poliudie) in the first legal reform recorded in Eastern Europe. She continued to evade proposals of marriage, defended the city during the Siege of Kiev in 968, and saved the power of the throne for her son.

Drevlian Uprising

The following account is taken from the Primary Chronicle. Princess Olga was the wife of Igor of Kiev, who was killed by the Drevlians. At the time of her husband's death, their son Svyatoslav was three years old, making Olga the official ruler of Kievan Rus' until he reached adulthood. The Drevlians wanted Olga to marry their Prince Mal, making him the ruler of Kievan Rus', but Olga was determined to remain in power and preserve it for her son.

The Drevlians sent twenty of their best men to persuade Olga to marry their Prince Mal and give up her rule of Kievan Rus'. She had them buried alive. Then she sent word to Prince Mal that she accepted the proposal, but required their most distinguished men to accompany her on the journey in order for her people to accept the offer of marriage. The Drevlians sent the best men who governed their land. Upon their arrival, she offered them a warm welcome and an invitation to clean up after their long journey in a bathhouse. After they entered, she locked the doors and set fire to the building, burning them alive.

With the best and wisest men out of the way, she planned to destroy the remaining Drevlians. She invited them to a funeral feast so she could mourn over her husband's grave. Her servants waited on them, and after the Drevlians were drunk, Olga's soldiers killed over 5,000 of them.[2] She then placed the city under siege.[2] She asked for three pigeons and three sparrows from each house; she claimed she did not want to burden the villagers any further after the siege.[2] They were happy to comply with the request.

Now Olga gave to each soldier in her army a pigeon or a sparrow, and ordered them to attach by thread to each bird a piece of sulfur bound with small pieces of cloth. When night fell, Olga bade her soldiers release the pigeons and the sparrows. So the birds flew to their nests, the pigeons to the cotes, and the sparrows under the eaves. The dove-cotes, the coops, the porches, and the haymows were set on fire. There was not a house that was not consumed, and it was impossible to extinguish the flames because all the houses caught on fire at once. The people fled from the city, and Olga ordered her soldiers to catch them. Thus she took the city and burned it, and captured the elders of the city. Some of the other captives she killed, while some she gave as slaves to her followers. The remnant she left to pay tribute.[5]

The story, however, is most likely a myth.[2]

Relations with the Holy Roman Emperor

Seven Latin sources document Olga's embassy to Holy Roman Emperor Otto I in 959. The continuation of Regino of Prèum mentions that the envoys requested the emperor to appoint a bishop and priests for their nation. The chronicler accuses the envoys of lies, commenting that their trick was not exposed until later. Thietmar of Merseburg says that the first archbishop of Magdeburg, Saint Adalbert of Magdeburg, before being promoted to this high rank, was sent by Emperor Otto to the country of the Rus' (Rusciae) as a simple bishop but was expelled by pagan allies of Svyatoslav I. The same data is repeated in the annals of Quedlinburg and Hildesheim.

Christianity

Princess Olga meets the body of her husband. A sketch by Vasily Surikov.
Olga was the first ruler of Rus' to convert to Christianity, done in either 945 or 957. The ceremonies of her formal reception in Constantinople were detailed by Emperor Constantine VII in his book De Ceremoniis. Following her baptism, Olga took the Christian name Yelena, after the reigning Empress Helena Lekapena. The Slavonic chronicles add apocryphal details to the account of her baptism, such as the story of how she charmed and "outwitted" Constantine and spurned his proposals of marriage. In actuality, at the time of her baptism, Olga was an old woman, while Constantine already had a wife.

Olga was one of the first people of Rus' to be proclaimed a saint for her efforts to spread Christianity throughout the country. Because of her proselytizing influence, the Eastern Orthodox Church, the Ruthenian Greek Catholic Church, and the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church call Saint Olga by the honorific Isapâostolos, "Equal to the Apostles". She is also a saint in the Roman Catholic Church. However, she failed to convert Svyatoslav, and it was left to Vladimir I, her grandson and pupil, to make Christianity the lasting state religion. During her son's prolonged military campaigns, she remained in charge of Kiev, residing in the castle of Vyshgorod with her grandsons. She died in 969, soon after the Pechenegs' siege of the city.[6][7]

Kiev, Olga of (I51061)

41502 Saint ¥lfgifu of Shaftesbury, also known as Saint Elgiva[1] (died 944) was the first wife of Edmund I (r. 939–946), by whom she bore two future kings, Eadwig (r. 955–959) and Edgar (r. 959–975). Like her mother Wynflaed, she had a close and special if unknown connection with the royal nunnery of Shaftesbury (Dorset), founded by King Alfred,[2] where she was buried and soon revered as a saint. According to a pre-Conquest tradition from Winchester, her feast day is 18 May.[3][4]

Queen consort of England
Tenure 939 - 944
Died 944
Burial Shaftesbury Abbey
Spouse Edmund I, King of England
Issue Eadwig, King of England
Edgar, King of England
Mother Wynflaed

Family background

Will of Wynflµd (British Library Cotton Charters viii. 38)[5]
Her mother appears to have been an associate of Shaftesbury Abbey called Wynflaed (also Wynnflµd). The vital clue comes from a charter of King Edgar, in which he confirmed the grant of an estate at Uppidelen (Piddletrenthide, Dorset) made by his grandmother (ava) Wynflµd to Shaftesbury.[6] She may well be the nun or vowess (religiosa femina) of this name in a charter dated 942 and preserved in the abbey's chartulary. It records that she received and retrieved from King Edmund a handful of estates in Dorset, namely Cheselbourne and Winterbourne Tomson, which somehow ended up in the possession of the community.[7]

Since no father or siblings are known, further speculation on ¥lfgifu's background has largely depended on the identity of her mother, whose relatively uncommon name has invited further guesswork. H. P. R. Finberg suggests that she was the Wynflµd who drew up a will, supposedly sometime in the mid-10th century, after ¥lfgifu's death. This lady held many estates scattered across Wessex (in Somerset, Wiltshire, Berkshire, Oxfordshire, and Hampshire) and was well connected with the nunneries at Wilton and Shaftesbury, both of which were royal foundations. On that basis, a number of relatives have been proposed for ¥lfgifu, including a sister called ¥thelflµd, a brother called Eadmµr, and a grandmother called Brihtwyn.[8]

There is, however, no consensus among scholars about Finberg's suggestion. Simon Keynes and Gale R. Owen object that there is no sign of royal relatives or connections in Wynflµd's will and Finberg's assumptions about ¥lfgifu's family therefore stand on shaky ground.[9] Andrew Wareham is less troubled about this and suggests that different kinship strategies may account for it.[10] Much of the issue of identification also seems to hang on the number of years by which Wynflµd can plausibly have outlived her daughter. In this light, it is significant that on palaeographical grounds, David Dumville has rejected the conventional date of c. 950 for the will, which he considers “speculative and too early” (and that one Wynflµd was still alive in 967).[11]

Married life

The sources do not record the date of ¥lfgifu's marriage to Edmund. The eldest son Eadwig, who had barely reached majority on his accession in 955, may have been born around 940, which gives us only a very rough terminus ante quem for the betrothal. Although as the mother of two future kings, ¥lfgifu proved to be an important royal bed companion, there is no strictly contemporary evidence that she was ever consecrated as queen. In a charter of doubtful authenticity dated 942-946, she attests as the king's concubine (concubina regis).[12] but later in the century ¥thelweard the Chronicler styles her queen (regina).

The remains of the Norman buildings which replaced the earlier ones at Shaftesbury Abbey.
Much of ¥lfgifu's claim to fame derives from her association with Shaftesbury. Her patronage of the community is suggested by a charter of King ¥thelred, dated 984, according to which the abbey exchanged with King Edmund the large estate at Tisbury (Wiltshire) for Butticanlea (unidentified). ¥lfgifu received it from her husband and intended to bequeath it back to the nunnery, but such had not yet come to pass (her son Eadwig demanded that Butticanlea was returned to the royal family first).[13]

¥lfgifu predeceased her husband in 944.[14] In the early 12th century, William of Malmesbury wrote that she suffered from an illness during the last few years of her life, but there may have been some confusion with details of ¥thelgifu's life as recorded in a forged foundation charter of the late 11th or 12th century (see below).[15] Her body was buried and enshrined at the nunnery.[16]

Sainthood

¥lfgifu was venerated as a saint soon after her burial at Shaftesbury. ¥thelweard reports that many miracles had taken place at her tomb up to his day,[17] and these were apparently attracting some local attention. Lantfred of Winchester, who wrote in the 970's and so can be called the earliest known witness of her cult, tells of a young man from Collingbourne (possibly Collingbourne Kingston, Wiltshire), who in the hope of being cured of blindness travelled to Shaftesbury and kept vigil. What led him there was the reputation of “the venerable St ¥lfgifu [...] at whose tomb many bodies of sick person receive medication through the omnipotence of God”.[18] Despite the new prominence of Edward the Martyr as a saint interred at Shaftesbury, her cult continued to flourish in later Anglo-Saxon England, as evidenced by her inclusion in a list of saints' resting places, at least 8 pre-Conquest calendars and 3 or 4 litanies from Winchester.[19]

¥lfgifu is styled a saint (Sancte ¥lfgife) in the D-text of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle (mid-11th century) at the point where it specifies Eadwig's and Edgar's royal parentage.[20] Her cult may have been fostered and used to enhance the status of the royal lineage, more narrowly that of her descendants.[21] Lantfred attributes her healing power both to her own merits and those of her son Edgar. It may have been due to her association that in 979 the supposed body of her murdered grandson Edward the Martyr was exhumed and in a spectacular ceremony, received at the nunnery of Shaftesbury, under the supervision of ealdorman ¥lfhere.[22]

According to William of Malmesbury, ¥lfgifu would secretly redeem those who were publicly condemned to severe judgment, she gave expensive clothes to the poor, and she also had prophetic powers as well as powers of healing. [23]

¥lfgifu's fame at Shaftesbury seems to have eclipsed that of its first abbess, King Alfred's daughter ¥thelgifu,[24] so much so perhaps that William of Malmesbury wrote contradictory reports on the abbey's early history. In the Gesta regum, he correctly identifies the first abbess as Alfred's daughter, following Asser, although he gives her the name of ¥lfgifu (Elfgiva),[25] while in his Gesta pontificum, he credits Edmund's wife ¥lfgifu with the foundation.[26] Either William encountered conflicting information, or he meant to say that ¥lfgifu refounded the nunnery.[27] In any event, William would have had access to local traditions at Shaftesbury, since he probably wrote a now lost metrical Life for the community, a fragment of which he included in his Gesta pontificum:[28]

For some years she suffered from illness,
And gave to God a soul that it had purged and purified
When she died, God brought lustre to her blessed remains
In his clemency with countless miracles.
If a blind man or a deaf worship at her tomb,
They are restored to health and prove the saint's merits.
He who went there lame comes home firm of step,
The madman returns sane, rich in good sense.[29]

41539 Sampson Bethell (b. 10 Jul 1750, m 24 Aug 1773, in Rockingham, NC, Mary Cantrell, b. 4 Dec 1754, New Castle, DE, d. 1820, Liberty, DeKalb, TN. Sampson died 10 Feb 1806, Warren, TN)

Sible Floyd Bethel listed Constance Sampson as the wife of William Bethell and mother of Sampson. He also surmised that the line of James of 1635, ran to William, to John, to Samuel, to William (& Constance Sampson), to Sampson. It is more likely that it is William, to John, to William (the brother of Samuel), to William (& Jean Hurst) to Sampson.*

The following is from a September 23, 1992, letter from Tommy Webb. "My information on the parents of Sampson Bethell came primarily from Mr. John P. Bethel of Des Arc, Arkansas, in 1980. He had done a vast amount of research, hired genealogists, etc., and had lots of documentary evidence to support that William Bethell and Jean Hurst were the parents of Peggy, William Samuel and Sampson (and possibly John, Martha and Elizabeth). John P. Bethel did not state positively who the father of William Bethell (m. Jean Hurst) was, but he thought it was William (1676-1750) the son of John Bethell (1655-1707). I likewise subscribe to this theory, but I acknowledge it to be only theory. John P. Bethel had the records of Augusta and other Virginia counties searched, and no evidence was found of a Constance Sampson anywhere. S. F. Bethel does not present any evidence either. Perhaps further information will eventually turn up to clarify this." ...The Early Bethells and Their Descendants 1635-1994, Carol Garde, Jim Garde, p. 28

Branch, Samuel (I18547)

41543 Samuel Cantrell was the son of Reuben Cantrell of New Castle, PA. He was a 5th generation descendant of Richard Cantril of Derbyshire England who came to America about 1682. Samuel married Mary Lou Giles and fathered at least 11 children, many of whom settled in Western NC and Northern Greenville Co. SC Cantrell, Samuel (I4085)

41544 Samuel Denton 1631-1713

Samuel DENTON was born in 1631 in Halifax, Yorkshire, England. Christened on 29 May 1631 in Coley Chapel, Halifax, England. Died on 20 Mar 1713 in Hempstead, Long Island, NY.

Samuel was listed on the 1673 Dutch Census at Hempstead, NY and owned property in Hempstead from 1662 and lived in the area most of his life. Transactions in 1703 show that he owned slaves. In 1685, he was reported to be owning 240 acres of land.

The 1698 Census at Hempstead, NY lists six of his nine children.

"New York Surrogate 8-305: Adm. Samuel Denton, late of Hempstead, intestate March 20, 1713 to his sons Samuel and Jonas." Papers filed with the clerk in Court of Appeals, Albany, NY named a daughter, "Hannah, wife of Thomas Treadwell," also spelled Tredwell.

From the "Tennessee Valley Historical Review:" Hempstead town records show that Samuel Denton and others took up land, 50 acres each, on the same terms as the first proprietors. In 1663, jointly with Thomas Rushmour, Samuel Denton obtained all rights and privileges upon Matthew Garrison's Neck and at Mattinacock, from Jeremy Wood of Hempstead.

On April 18, 1665, John Smith of Hempstead sold to "my son-in-law Samuel Denton" certain lands. In 1698 he was called Samuel Denton, Senior. A deed of gifts from Samuel Denton of Hempstead, Yeoman, in consideration of "paternal love and affection I have and do bear toward my well-beloved son James Denton of Hempstead, Yeoman" to land within the township of Hempstead.

December 16, 1710.

The date of Samuel's inventory was March 15, 1713 and was taken by Obediah Volintine and James Serion. "March 10, 1713, Hempstead. Mary Denton ye widdow and Relict of Samuel Denton, late of Hempstead in Queens County, doth for divers good causes and consideration hereunto moving, refuses to administer upon the estate of her deceased husband, Samuel Denton." So the administration was granted to Samuel and Jonas Denton, sons of said deceased. The records pertaining to the administration of the estate clearly show receipts from the children calling each by name. Therefore we have a definite list of the children of Samuel and Mary Smith Denton.

From Genelogical Data from Inventories of NY Estates 1666-1825 by Kenneth Scott and James Owne. "Denton, Samuel of Hempstead, Queens Co., yeoman - Renunciation (20 March 1713/4) of Mary Denton of her right to administer the estate of her dec'd husband in favor of his sons, Samuel and Jonas Denton.

Her renunciation was witnessed by Jacob Smith and John Sprague. Inventory (15 March 1713/4) taken and appraised by Obadiah Volentine and James Searing, by order of Col. John. Jackson, J.P.

The chief item was a negro boy and girl (90 Pounds) and a Negro man listed as 'worth nothing.' Account of Samuel and Jonas Denton, administrators, records the following payments to heirs of the dec'd.:

to Mary Denton (Widow of the dec'd.)

to Peter Smith (Son of Mary Ellison, dec'd who was a daughter of the intestate),

to Joseph Robinson and Jane his wife (who was a daughter of the dec'd.,

to Jonathan Seaman and Elizabeth his wife (a daughter of the intestate),

to Abraham Denton (son of the intestate, to James Denton (son of the intestate),

to Thomas Beadwell and Hannah his wife (a daughter of the intestate),

to Robert Mitchell and Phoebe his wife (a daughter of the intestate),

to Ezekiel Smith and Martha his wife (a daughter of the intestate) and

to Jonas Denton (a son of the intestate)."

He married Mary Rock SMITH in 1654 in Hempstead, Long Island, NY.

Mary Rock SMITH was born on 20 Jul 1630 in Dorchester, Suffolk, MA. Died on 15 Mar 1713 in after in Hempstead, Queens, NY.

They had the following children:

Samuel II DENTON
Jonas DENTON
Benjamin DENTON was born in 1660
Mary Ellison DENTON
Jane DENTON
*Abraham DENTON Sr.
James DENTON
Phoebe DENTON
Hannah DENTON
Martha DENTON

41548 Samuel Higginbotham was a Rev. Soldier. He was the son of Aaron Higginbotham and Clara Graves, the dau. of Francis Graves. He m. Jane Satterwhite of Essex Co., VA in 1772. Jane was the dau. of John Satterwhite. Samuel was a member of, and a Vestryman of, Christ Church in Lexington Parish, Amherst Co., VA. Samuel's Rev. War service is well documented in many books. They were in Elbert Co., GA by 1792. Samuel had died by Feb. 1803 when the Court met in Elbert Co., GA. Higginbotham, Captain Samuel (I20718)

41549 Samuel Hillhouse (wife Ann Hillhouse)

Born 1707 FreeHall Londonderry Northern Ireland
Passed on 8/17/1782 (per registered NC will) SAMUEL HILLIS WAS BORN IN 1707,IN FREEHALL,DERRY IRELAND, TO JOHN AND RACHEL HILLHOUSE (JOHN 1655-1716)-(RACHEL 1667-1716).SAMUEL HILLIS WAS ABOUT 9 YEARS OLD WHEN HIS PARENTS DIED.

SAMUEL CAME TO AMERICA AS A YOUNG MAN LANDING IN PENNSYLVANIA. HE MEET AND MARRIED ANN LUCKEY, THE DAUGHTER OF ROBERT AND ISABLE LUCKEY OF LANCASTER CO. PENNSYLVANIA.The first time I find samuel hillis' name in print,is in the will of Robert luckey Ann hillis' father, in that he states that he leaves to his daughter ann the wife of samuel hillis, five shillings. ON THE 13th DAY OF APRIL 1754 ANN (LUCKEY ) HILLISES FATHER ROBERT LUCKEY WROTE HIS LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT,HE PAST AWAY THE 21st DAY OF NOV 1757,AFTER HIS DEATH SAMUEL ,ANN AND MEMBERS OF THE LUCKEY FAMILY SET OUT FOR " THE IRISH SETTELMENT" IN ROWAN CO. north carolina. I belive that samuel and ann hillis' sons Robert and sampson were either born in pennsylvania,or on the way to north carolina, because I don't find any record of samuel till he is granted land in north carolinain 1761. WITH SAMPSON BEING BORN IN 1753, AND ROBERT BEING BORN IN 1755.

The book the carolina cradle by Robert w. Ramsey states that the will of robert luckey, written in 1754in the martic township, lancaster co. pennsylvania, referred to sons hugh, john, andrew, james, robert and samuel and to daughters isbel the wife of william sleven, and ann the wife of samuel hillis. also mentioned was agnes luckey the wife of robert pendry. By 1762 john luckey, john luckey jr., joseph luckey, robert luckey, samuel luckey, william luckey, william sleven, alexander pendry and samuel hillis were all residents of the Irish settlement.

Arriving by way of the shenandoah valley from pennsylvania and maryland, these avid scotch-irish presbyterians settled in the western part of the present rowan co.(26 counties were finally carved out of the original county, the present county taking its shape in 1840). About this time the eastern part of the county was settled by germans of the reformed faith. Both groups kept strictly to themselves for over a hundred years.

THE COUNTY RECORDS OF ROWAN CO. NORTH CAROLINA (BOOK 5-PAGE 78) REVEALS THAT ON DECEMBER 21,1761 SAMUEL HILLIS AND MEMBERS OF THE LUCKEY FAMILY WERE GRANTED LAND IN ROWAN CO. NC BY THE EARL OF GRANVILLE;. SAMUEL HILLIS WAS GRANTED 640 ACRES OF LAND DESCRIBED AS BEING ON THE NORTH SIDE OF SECOND CREEK . THIS SECTION OF LAND WAS PAID FOR AT THE RATE OF TEN SHILLINGS FOR EACH 100 ACRES OF LAND,OR $7.80 FOR THE ENTIRE 640 ACRES.

AT THIS TIME IN ROWAN CO. NORTH CAROLINA MANY PEOPLE WERE DIVDED ON THE SUBJECT OF INDEPENDENCE. KING GEORGE HAD MANY LOYAL FOLLOWERS IN THE COLONIES; HOWEVER THE SCOTCH-IRISH IN EVERY COMMUNITY WERE ALMOST TO THE MAN FOR INDEPENDENCE. THEY HAD SUFFERED MUCH FROM BRITISH OPPRESSION IN IRELAND AND HAD COME TO AMERICA, THAT THEY MIGHT HAVE RELIGIOUS AND CIVIL LIBERTY.

All five of samuel hillis' sons Sampson, robert, john, samuel jr. and palser all fought in the war.Sampson fought in the continental line-revolutionary war. robert fought with co. B under gen. griffith rutherford army of north carolina and under col.francis locke reg. comm. and with capt.w.m wilson. samuel jr. fought under griffith rutherford 10th regiment of the continental army at the age of 16 yrs. john hillis served under capt. bell and was present when cornwallis surrender, and served under capt. hyskill. his brother palser also served in the war.

In 1782 samuel hillis wrote his last will and testimony, samuel hillis died August 7, 1782 he is buired in the cemetery of the Thyateria presbyterian church at mt. ulla in the mill bridge area of rowan co. north carolina.(ann luckey hillis is not buired beside him).

IN HIS WILL SAMUEL HILLIS STATED THAT HE KNEW HE WAS WAS VERY SICK OF BODY BUT OF PERFECT MIND AND MEMORY, AND WHILE BEING IN THIS CONDITION, HE WONTED TO DISPOSE OF HIS WORLDLY POSSESSIONS AS FOLLOWS;

to his loving wife ann he bequeathed three cows, her mare, spinning wheel, bed clothes, and possession of the farm for her lifetime.

to my son sampson, one-third of the farm, the plow, mall and wedges, and one cow.

to my son samuel jr. ,one-third of the farm, the family house and improvements, three cows, mare.

to my son robert, one-third of the farm.

to my daughter elizabeth, her mare and saddle, three cows, her bed and furniture.

to my daughter ann, her white mare.

to my daughter martha, five shillings in hard cash.(65 cents)

in addition, samuel asked that he be giving a decent christian burial.

samuel didn't mention john or palser in his will.I belive john and palser left rowan co. north carolina in september of 1779,with Daniel Boone when he lead a large party of emigrants to kentucky.

NOW THAT THE WAR WAS OVER, AND SAMUEL SR. WAS DEAD,SAMUEL JR. HIS MOTHER,BROTERS AND SISTERS DISPOSED OF THE FAMILY FARM AND MOVED. THIS MOVED OCCURRED ABOUT 1786 AND TOOK THEM TO FAYETTE COUNTY ,KENTUCKY.

41551 Samuel Lipman, 60, a pianist and critic who was publisher of the New Criterion, a conservative journal of the arts, died of leukemia Saturday in New York City. In 1982, Mr. Lipman became publisher of the New Criterion. Previously, he had been known chiefly as a concert pianist and the music critic of Commentary magazine, but he soon became a leader in the neo-conservative movement, writing and lecturing on political and cultural subjects. Four years ago, as the moderator of a symposium on intellectuals in public life, Mr. Lipman deplored the disappearance of intellectuals from government. "One would have to go back to the 1920s, to the Coolidge and Harding administrations, to find a time when intellectuals were as absent from public life as they are today," he said. Lipman, Samuel (I35090)

41552 Samuel Magness was born about 1716, probably in Frederick County Virginia. he is thought to have married first about 1784 Mary Morgan, and second by 1800 Nancy Ragin. Nancy and Samuel signed a deed on 22 january 1800, recorded in Greenville Co., SC Deed Book E, page 405. By 1790 Samuel Magness was living in Greenville County, South Carolina with a son and two daughters; by 1800 he had five daughters and three sons. On 3 May 1792 Samuel had a land transaction recorded in Greenville County Deed Book C, page 436. Samuel was still living in Breenville County on December 19, 1817, when he sold his share of the William magness estate to his brother-in-law, John Roberts, for $625. (27) Nevertheless, he joined his three brothers in 1819 in a lawsuit over William’s personal property. (28) Samuel Magness is thought to have moved to Arkansas about 1828, first to Independence County, then to marion County. On 15 August 1829 he made a deed as Samuel Magness of the Territory of Arkansas, County of Independence. (29) Samuel Magness died in Marion County, Arkansas, in 1831. His wife Nancy died there in 1841. Samuel had several children by his two wives; some of their names are not known.

I. James Magness, b. 25 May 1789 South Carolina, died 2 Aug. 1872 Marion Co., Arkansas. married 22 July 1813 in South Carolina to Narcissa Barnett, b. 12 Feb. 1796 SC, died 26 May 1862 in marion Co., Arkansas.

II. Joseph Magness, born about 1790 South Carolina, died 1840’s Marion Co., Arkansas, married Martha (Patsy) Springfield in South Carolina.

III. Perry Green Magness, born about 1801 Greenville Co., SC, married Jane -----. Lived Union Co., Ga 1850, later in Polk Co., Tn., and died after 1880, probably in Fannin Co., Ga. (both James and Perry Green are mentioned as sons of Samuel Magness in Greenville Co., SC Deed Book Q, page 86.)

IV. Elizabeth (Betty) Magness born about 1810 SC, died 14 July 1889 in Independence Co., Arkansas, married there on 20 Sept. 1829 to Washington Bradley.

History of Odell name

Last name at birth for William should be Odell, not O'Dell. William and his descendants were all born with the last name of Odell until at least 1860. It wasn't until Irish immigrants started arriving that the name started to be misspelled as O'Dell. Census takers and others started the misspelling thinking that any name that started with an O & D, must be Irish and should have an apostrophe. But Odell is not Irish, it is English and should not be spelled that way. Eventually, some Odells who had their names misspelled, started using the apostrophe version. And their descendants all used O'Dell. To verify this, I did a last name search for the Census of 1860. There are about 5,000 Odells in that census. I could not find any of them who spelled the name with an apostrophe. Then I checked the 1910 Census, and there were about 800 people who now used O'Dell, the rest still used Odell. Probably more started using O'Dell after 1910. Added by Thomas Odell 1/6/2019

41564 Sancho III (1134 – 31 August 1158), called the Desired (el Deseado),[1] was King of Castile and Toledo for one year, from 1157 to 1158. He was the son of Alfonso VII of Leâon and Castile and his wife Berenguela of Barcelona, and was succeeded by his son Alfonso VIII. During the Reconquista, in which he took an active part, he founded the Order of Calatrava.[2] His nickname due to his position as the first child of his parents, born after eight years of childless marriage.

Life

He was the eldest son of King Alfonso VII of Leâon and Castile and Berengaria of Barcelona.[3] During his father's reign, he appears as "king of Nâajera" as early as 1149. His father's will partitioned the kingdom between his two sons: Sancho inherited the kingdoms of Castile and Toledo, and Ferdinand inherited Leâon.[4] The two brothers had just signed a treaty when Sancho suddenly died in the summer of 1158, being buried at Toledo.[5]

He had married, in 1151, Blanche of Navarre, daughter of Garcâia Ramâirez of Navarre, and had two sons:

Alfonso VIII of Castile, his successor
infante Garcâia, who died at birth in 1156, apparently also resulting in the death of Queen Blanche.
There may also have been an older son who died in infancy.

In "Wills and Inventories of White County, Tennessee" - Mary F'. Mitchell, 1810-1841, published 1949. Will of Joseph Whiteley. wife Sally. All any children (unnamed) Teste. John Herbert and David Ervin proven 1818. P. 114.

In Warren County, Tennessee, early tax records, there was a Sally Whiteley listed in 1820. Having two males between 10-16 years and 18 to 26 years, and one female over 16 years. Sally was a widow past 45.

Sally Whiteley lived her latter years with her son John in Ohio and died in Clark County in 1836. Was buried in the "Fletcher Chapel Cemetery". Frances T. Graves' brother visited grave in 1957 and saw headstone.

Birth: Sep. 23, 1760, USA Death: Apr. 24, 1836 Springfield Clark County Ohio, USA
Two gravestone markers are in Fletcher Chapel Cemetery in Springfield, Ohio. The older grave marker was probably placed there by her son John with whom she was living at the time of her death. It reads: "IN MEMORY OF SARAH, WIFE OF JOSEPH WHITELEY DIED 24 APRIL, 1836 75 YRS. 7 MO. 1 DAY."

If Sarah died 24 April 1836 at age 75 yrs. 7 mo. and 1 day as on her older headstone, her birth date would have been on 23 Sept., 1760. She would have been about 15 when she married Joseph and 16 when she had her first child, Thomas born in 1776. She would have been about 49/50 when her last child, Sallie was born. Amos N. Whiteley stated in his book that Sallie died at age 20 in 1830.
The newer marker reads: "GREAT GRAND MOTHER SARAH STAPLETON WHITELEY,MOTHER OF JOHN WHITELEY, 1754-1836". This last headstone was placed on the grave by a great grandchild. Sarah's death age for these dates would be about 82 years old. She would have been about 22 years old when first son, Thomas was born, but she would have been about 56/57 in 1810 when, according to Amos' book, the daughter Sallie was born in 1810, which is highly unlikely. The first headstone is believed to be correct. (Source: Doris Estes, author of The Whiteley Family book.)

Biography

Sarah Lynn Patton was probably born in Ulster Province, Ireland, between 1663-1670. She was likely the daughter of David Lynn and Margaret [Patton]. A duplicate Wikitree profile for Sarah stated that her father was "William David D Lynn" but there was no source for this information. The name of the village that the profiles/sources state she was born in was "Kilmacrenan". There is a village called Kilmacrennan in County Donegal, traditionally part of Ulster. Some profiles state that Sarah was born in Scotland, however, other research indicates that it was her ancestors who came from Scotland, not she[1].

Different Wikitree genealogists have provided a number of siblings for Sarah, most of these consistently stated that she was the sister of Elizabeth Lynn, William Lynn, Margaret Lynn, John Lynn, Charles Lynn and Ann Lynn. Some profiles also include an additional brother, Audley Lynn while the Rootsweb chat indicated there may also have been a brother called Samuel.

On October 21, 1757, Dr. William Lynn of Fredericksburg, Virginia - known brother of Margaret (Lynn) Lewis of Augusta County, Virginia and of "Elizabeth Hutcherson in Ireland", "Charles Lynn in Ireland", and "Audley Lynn in Ireland" - wrote his will and named those four siblings and no more.

It is likely that Sarah married Henry Patton in 1685. A record of this marriage can be found in the US and International Marriage Records 1560-1900 data set maintained by Ancestry.

Multiple profiles also provided different children for Sarah Lynn. "Lynn-84" contained a list of chlidren called Andrew Patton, Richard Patton, two sons called John Patton, William Patton, James Lynn Patton. Henry Patton's profile indicates that there could have been many more. No sourced information provided about where the children were born. One son called John Patton was reputed to be born in Virginia in 1702, but most profiles state that Sarah died in Ulster, Ireland. Is it likely that she would have emigrated to Virginia and then returned to Ireland to die in 1757? Some profiles (Lynn-495) state that Sarah died in 1692 in Londonderry, Ireland, or after 1705 (Lynn-653). This information should also be verified.

Sarah Lynn's middle name may have been Cameron[2]

Please refer to the G2G discussion highlighted on the right hand side of this profile for more history on the duplicate profiles.
