Thurland Castle, Tunstall, Lancashire, England
Thurland Castle, Tunstall, Lancashire, England

The earliest existing fabric dates from the 14th century,[1] and in 1402 Sir Thomas Tunstall was given a licence to crenellate the building in 1402.[2] It the passed down through his son Thomas to Bryan, a hero of the Battle of Flodden in 1513, who was dubbed the "Stainless Knight" by the king and immortalised in the poem The Stainless Knight and the Battle of Flodden Field by Sir Walter Raleigh. Bryan's son Marmaduke was High Sheriff of Lancashire for 1544. After two or three further generations of Tunstalls the castle was sold to Sir John Girlington in 1605. After passing to his grandson, Sir John Girlington, a Royalist major-general during the Civil War, it was badly damaged by Parliamentarian forces during a siege in 1643, following which it was described as being "ruinous".[1] Sir John's son, also John, was High Sheriff of Lancashire for 1663.

Aunt Margie was living with us in Detroit while she was attending secretarial school. Uncle Jack would come calling every night and every night Mom would throw him out of the house by mid-night as they wouldn't stop making-out on our couch...

Here he is in the garage on a chair where he & Pop would hang out and share a pint of "4 Roses" whisky - if Pop felt like sharing. Upper right is his book shelf which contained his favorite western or mystery novels written by authors such as Elmore Leonard and Louis L'Amour. Poor fellow, I don't think he could do much but read in his later years as he had little money...

BTW, I couldn't get over how much Pop, lying in his coffin, looked like Uncle Pete. DAH

On her FaceBook page...

First, my name is Vone, it is a long O and the e is silent. That means my name rhymes with Bone, Zone, Phone, and Cone....VONE! I only know 2 other Vones who spell and pronounce their name the same way and 2 of us got the name from our parents' knowing the other Vone. Any questions?

Now, about me....

I am a Mother, Teacher, Daughter, Girl Friend, Student, Friend, Sister, Aunt, Sport Fan, and much more.
I am the product of parents who raised me in a wonderful environment. I have been blessed with outstanding and incredible parents and an amazing daughter.
I have a passion for learning and teaching. The children are the future and we must teach them to be independent productive contributors to our ever changing society.

So much more about me to tell, but those who know me ...know me.
