  1. 1.  Alice Marie "Marie" PrinceAlice Marie "Marie" Prince was born 20 May 1922, Sherwood, Franklin County, Tennessee (daughter of William Calvin Prince and Alice Moss Taylor); died 16 Nov 2012, Boulevard Terrace Nursing Facility, Murfreesboro, Rutherford County, Tennessee; was buried 19 Nov 2012, Rose Hill Memorial Gardens, Tullahoma, Coffee County, Tennessee.

    Notes:

I was told that as a very young child, I would climb on her lap and beg, "Rockie-Rie-Rockie".

She & Uncle Fred lived up the street from us in Detroit during the mid-to-late 1940's. Uncle Fred was then a bus driver, so Aunt Rie made me a smaller version of Uncle Fred's uniform - I was so proud when I wore it. Now that I am reminising, she was a wonderful cook and baker...

So many fond memories of Aunt Marie. After Uncle Fred's tragic death. she married "Uncle James" Millsaps and they had a daughter, Martha Ann. Although the Millsaps were not blood kin, the Byars family extended their familial arms around Marie, James and Martha Ann and loved each as our own....

I think that William was maybe a cousin or uncle o the one I am researching. This one was the son of David b 1750, and Amelia ?, had siblings Gilbert, Richard, Hardy, Mary and Polly. There were several Williams in this family, as well as John, David, Edward, Richard, and Davids.

Here is what I know about David. I have his birth as about 1745 in Sussex County, Virginia. He married Milly, but her name may have been Amelia, Millicent, Mildred, or Melia. David died about 1792 in Johnston County, North Carolina. The children of David Prince are

    Richard David - b. 1765,

    Hardy - b. 1770,

    William, Gilbert, Betty, and Polly.

  3. 68.  William Roberts, IV was born 15 Feb 1732, (Connecticut) (son of William Roberts, III and Mary Vaughn); died 6 Feb 1816, Knox County, Tennessee; was buried Washington Pike Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Knox County, Tennessee.

    Notes:

This William Roberts was actually the 4th generation of William Roberts in his family line. His father was also named William Roberts, born abt. 1693 in Connecticut and married to Mary Vaughn. His grandfather was also named William Roberts and he was born before Sep. 4, 1664 in Milford, New Haven, CT. (husband of Elizabeth Lobdell). William's great grandfather was also named William Roberts and he was born abt. 1617 in Hertfordshire, England (wife Johanna).

We are told that this William Roberts (William the 4th) was married to Isabel Graham, daughter of Nathaniel Graham and Margaret Codry, on Feb.14,1767, in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. However there do not appear to be any marriage records that survived for that time and place (according to the Somerset County, PA. GenWeb website). So if that is correct the date and place must have come from family records (family Bibles).

Adding to the doubt on this date for their marriage is the fact that their first born child, Mary Roberts, was born in September 1768, in Rowan County, North Carolina.

Their second known child, Henry Graham Roberts, was born in Sullivan County, Tennessee in May of 1773. And their next six known children were all born there in Sullivan County, Tennessee as well (Rachel b. July 1775, Margaret b. Dec. 1777, David b. Jan. 1780, William the 5th b. July 1782, John b. Oct. 1784, and Graham b. March 1787). Their youngest known child, Isabella, was born in Feb. 1790, in Hawkins County, TN.

William married Isabella Graham 14 Feb 1767, Somerset County, Pennsylvania. Isabella (daughter of Nathaniel Graham and Margaret Codry) was born 2 Aug 1744, Monmouth County, New Jersey; died 15 Jan 1833, Knox County, Tennessee; was buried Washington Pike Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Knox County, Tennessee. Daughter of Nathaniel Graham and Margaret Codry.

Wife of William Roberts. We are told that they were married on February 14,1767, in Somerset County,Pennsylvania. However the Somerset County GenWeb website reports that marriage records for that time do not exist. So we have to assume that this alleged date and place of their marriage has come from a Family Bible or other family records.

Isabel gave birth to at least nine children. There may have been others. The following are the children or hers that we do know of (to date):

Mary Roberts b. Sep. 16, 1768 in Rowan County, N.C.

Henry Graham Roberts b. May 14, 1773 in Sullivan County, TN. Husband of Margaret Forgey

Rachel Roberts b. July 16, 1775 in Sullivan Co., TN., married to John Anderson, on Dec. 28, 1792 in Knox Co., TN.

Margaret Roberts b. Dec. 13, 1777 in Sullivan Co., TN., died in 1797 in Knox Co., TN., married to Andrew Anderson in Knox Co., TN., on Dec. 11, 1797, son of William Anderson and Jane Bryan.

David Roberts b. Jan. 1, 1780 in Sullivan Co., TN.

William Roberts the 5th b. July 1, 1782 in Sullivan Co., TN., married in 1806, in Knox Co., TN., to Elizabeth Anderson, daughter of William Anderson and Jane Bryan.

John Roberts b. Oct. 28, 1784 in Sullivan Co., TN., married in 1807 to Jane Anderson, daughter of William Anderson and Jane Bryan.

    Tragedy for the family...

I am descended from Archibald and your post was not quite correct on what happened to him.
It was not Archibald Sr. but his son Archibald Jr. who was killed in the massacre. His wife Ann was initially captured, but escape, and received a frosty reception from relatives when she arrived to reclaim the family property from them.

Quite a few of Ann's relatives were also killed in the massacre. As for Archibald Jr. and Ann's children, this is a somewhat confusing point:
-- An oldest son named John is said in some accounts to have been killed, but in others to have escaped. I have seen some researchers claim to be his descendants.
-- A baby was kidnapped and eventually killed. One version has the baby killed immediately when Ann escaped. Another has a Shawnee family adopting the child, but killing it a few years later. Both versions describe a gruesome death by the child's head being bashed in.
-- Jane Clenndennin was the young daughter of Archibald Jr. and Ann, who was captured by the Shawnees. She was held captive by near Pittsburg for nine years. At the age of 14 she was released in a hostage swap or some such arrangement. According to one version, she was with child and Ann intially would not accept her as her daughter.

Jane married a Mr. Davis. Her daughter Mary Gray Davis (wife of Congressman Ballard Smith of Virginia) is my direct ancestor.

Since one version of the story implies that Jane's oldest child was not really a Davis, I would be very interested in learning more about whether that is accurate and whether that was Mary or an older sibling (half-sibling).
