Elizabeth was the daughter of Thomas E. Roberts and Mary A. "Polly" Webb Roberts. She was the wife of James W. Swindell. She is almost certainly buried in one of the numerous unmarked graves at Johnson Chapel as most members of the Roberts and Swindell families are interred there, but no record of her burial is found at this time.

Thomas E. Roberts is believed to be the son of William Roberts, but there is controversy about the identity of his mother. Some family historians believe his mother was Sallie Humphrey(s) and some say it is Sarah Walling.

Thomas's tombstone gives his date of birth as October 14, 1808 but in his son, George Washington Roberts's, Bible, the date is written as September 4, 1804. Whatever the correct date, Thomas lived a brief life leaving his wife, Mary, a widow at a young age with a house full of children to raise alone. Only two of her children, Francis Asbury and James M. were married at the time of their father's death.

Thomas was married to Mary A. "Polly" Webb, the daughter of Rev. Jeremiah Webb and Sarah "Sallie" Copeland Webb of White Co. TN. Thomas and Mary had twelve children as stated in Mary's obituary. Several of their children migrated to Morgan County, Alabama; some just before the Civil War and others just afterward. Mary also moved to Alabama where she lived to be almost 94 years old and is buried at Johnson Chapel Cemetery in Morgan County.

Little is known about Thomas Roberts's life. There is a mention in the history of Mt. Gilead Church of a Thomas Roberts being one of the original trustees of the church and it is possible it could have been this Thomas Roberts. There are three young Roberts children buried adjacent to Thomas at Mt. Gilead who are likely his sons. They are Jeremiah, John W. and Thomas H. Roberts. All died young.

Thomas married Mary A. "Polly" Webb in 1824 in (White County, Tennessee). Mary (daughter of Reverend Jeremiah M. Webb and Sarah "Sallie" Copeland) was born on 15 Dec 1809 in North Carolina; died on 4 Sep 1903 in Danville, Morgan County, Alabama; was buried on 5 Sep 1903 in Johnson Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery, Danville, Morgan County, Alabama. She was the wife of Thomas E. Roberts, born October 14, 1809 in White County, Tennessee and died July 7, 1852 in White County, Tennessee. She was the mother of 12 children and a widow for the rest of her natural life. Carolyn Lane, a descendant of hers, found where she was buried and generously had a legible stone put near the original grave marker and supplied all the information below:

An article by Guinn Copeland in the January 23, 1890 edition of the Alabama Enquirer states that "Just about the beginning of the Lincoln campaign, a large family of Roberts came to Morgan County. A.F. Roberts (Francis Asbury) was a lieutenant in Capt. Harper's company of cavalry. He was brave and much esteemed. All the Roberts family were true to their country. All but one was in the Confederate Army and he was in the Union service. Not one of them was in the woods. Herd and William and Rev. Washington Roberts were brothers of Asbury. Their mother was a Webb and was left a widow when her many children were small. But she brought them up well."

An article in the Danville News on August 21, 1903 states: "Mrs. Mary Roberts, who has been confined to her bed and room so long is very feeble at this writing. She will be 95 years old in December 1903."

An article in the Neel News on September 18, 1903 states: "Died on the 5th inst.(meaning "of this month") at Danville, AL, Mrs. Mary Roberts, mother of W. J. Roberts of Neel at the age of 95. She has been a member of the Methodist Church for 70 years, probably the oldest member of that church in the county. She was an earnest Christian woman, full of good works, and loved by all with whom she came in contact. She was buried at Johnson Chapel on the following day, the service being rendered by J. L. Heaton and W. D. Brown."

Mary's obituary tells us much about her life, where she was born, and when she was married to Thomas. The following appeared in the New Decatur Advertiser October 9, 1903, some weeks after her death. It was written by her grandson Thomas "Edd" Roberts.

"Mrs. Mary A. Roberts, wife of Thomas E. Roberts, was born in South Carolina, December 15, 1809 and departed this life at the home of her son, Esquire J. H. Roberts, at Danville, Alabama September 4, 1903 at the age of 94 years, 8 months and 20 days. Her remains were laid to rest the following day in Johnson Chapel Cemetery to await the resurrection of the just. Rev. J. H. Heaton conducted the burial services.

Mrs. Roberts was the daughter of Rev. Jerrie M. (Jeremiah) and Sallie (Sarah Copeland) Webb. In her early childhood, she moved with her parents to Sparta, White County, Tennessee and in 1824 she was married to Thomas E. Roberts and to their union were born twelve children. In 1833 she professed faith in Christ, and with her husband, joined the Methodist Church in which she lived a faithful and consecrated Christian life for about 71 years--till God called. In 1852 she was left a widowed mother, with the responsibility of providing for and raising her orphan children resting upon her. She was the mother of Esquire J. H. Roberts of Danville, Rev. G. W. Roberts and W. J. Roberts of Neel, and a sister of that venerable minister, Rev. Elisha Webb, of Sparta, Tennessee. She was the mother of twelve chidlren, 59 grandchildren, 119 great grandchildren and 24 great, great grandchildren, making a total of 214 descendants.

We have corresponded before. Have been reviewing dna results lately. I'm Wm. Roberts b. 1765 kit 130762.

I also match as you do closely to the John Roberts b. 1733/35 of Surry Co NC. As for a possibility that your JAMES 1807 was the son of WM., son of JOHN 1733/35 of Surry, I looked over Earl Roberts extensive research. He's now deceased, desc. of John 1733/35, but he's got a pretty well documentation of that family.. James b. ca 1805 (whom you mentioned is prob the same James as yours who went to White Co. TN) and family all seemed to stay in Grayson Co. Va.. James 1805 children: Lorenzo Dow b. 1831, Joseph 1833, Phoebe 1837, Nancy 1845, Micajah 1846 and Peter
1849. I don't see any hints of his moving to TN, but I guess it could have happen.

Now, I descend from Wm. Roberts of Lee Co. Va. With that said, my dna matches are the closest to Earl and other known descendants of John 1733/35 of Surry as yourself, but I'm 99% certain my Wm Roberts did not descend directly from John of Surry. Besides John had a son already named William so my Wm. can't fit in his family. So, in my case, it seems that descendants who we are almost certainly closer related to me (such as yourself most likely) than John of Surry show a MORE DISTANT DNA match??? Go figure. I don't understand it.

I cannot offer any information regarding the relationship between Jesse Roberts and William C. Roberts.

However, regarding your question about William Roberts, son of Reuben Roberts, I have been researching my gr-gr-grandfather's relationship with the Reuben Roberts clan for the past 3 - 4 years now due to some misinformation contained in "The Generations of Reuben" written by Laney Roberts.

I am now of the opinion, based on the evidence I have collected, that the William Roberts married to Sarah Walling(or Wallen) is the son of William Roberts Sr. of Lee County, VA.

Others have suggested this same relationship before 'The Generations of Reuben' went to print. Laney Roberts goes to some length in Chapter IV of his book to conclude otherwise but the arguments he puts forth just are not convincing and seem to be based on incomplete information.

I am in the process of organizing a DRAFT of a more complete set of data, but for now, and for the sake of brevity, I will share the following facts I have gathered to support my position.

1) There was a William Roberts jr. from Lee County, VA. living in White county Tennessee in 1822.

Laney Roberts states in his book: "the writer has not been able to find any documented data which prove or in any way suggest that a William Roberts, Jr. of Lee County, Virginia, ever lived in White County, Tennessee."

Response - See Hawkins Co. TN Circuit Court Minutes 1822-1825. Page 57-58. Thursday 10th October 1822. E. Embree, surviving partner of E&E Embree vs. Amis Grantham et al. Depositions to be taken of:

John McKinney Jr. of Murray Co TN

According to the above, William Roberts, Jr. was in White Co TN during the period of 1822-1825. This would appear to be William Jr. s/o William Sr. of Lee Co VA because the other men mentioned are men associated with that family. William Sr. had deeds with John McKinney Sr.; Thomas is son of Wm Sr. and brother to Wm Jr. William Sr. married Katheryn, the daughter of Dauswell Rogers who was on the 1767 Pittsylvania Co VA Tax List, the first one taken when Pittsylvania became a county.

2) This same William Roberts can be found in 1810 Lee County VA Tax records living near the James Walling family.

3) James Walling nuncupative will made in White Co., TN in 1849 says his daughter Sarah was married to William Roberts.

4) Thomas E. and Joseph Roberts (sons of William C. Roberts identified by L. Roberts in his book as being the son of Reuben), stated in the 1850 White County national census that they were born in Virginia.

The evidence indicates "The generations of Reuben" is incorrect. I have more data that I am in the process of organizing a DRAFT which I will make available soon to further support my position and that the 'other' William Roberts, the son of Reuben, lived in Warren County, TN and was the father of Thomas, Ellis & James Roberts. I do not know who he was married to nor how many children they had - there are indications, none of which I can substantiate, that he may have been married to Sallie Humphreys.

Description: In "The generations of Reuben", Laney Roberts identified the wrong William Roberts as the son of Reuben Roberts. The William Roberts Laney identified as being the son of Reuben is actually William Roberts jr of Lee County, VA. I have spent considerable effort in working through the misinformation contained in "The Generations of Reuben". I recently submitted and obtained certification for Reuben Roberts to be included the First families of Tennessee Project sponsored by the East TN Historical Society in Knoxville, TN. My submission was based on my lineage through William Roberts of Warren County, TN -- the ETHS FFoT project had another Reuben Roberts submission from a descendant of William Roberts of White Co. TN (The one Laney Roberts incorrectly identified) at the same time and, after reviewing the submissions of each, the ETHS agreed that the Warren County William Roberts was the son of Reuben Roberts. The William Roberts of White Co. submission only had one source of information cited -- "The Generations of Reuben". Check one your other sources - "The Hache-Hash Genealogy and Allied Lines" by Gertrude Saylors. She correctly cited James M. Roberts m. Martha 'Patsy' Hash as the son of William Roberts. In his book, Laney Roberts changed the entry for James M. Roberts m. Martha 'Patsy' Hash to be the son of Caswell Cobb Roberts. Laney spends several pages in his book discussing why he thinks William Roberts of White county is the son of Reuben Roberts -- he is actually trying to discredit Mrs. Saylors work in his arguments (which are very weak). Check your sources - I have never seen a single primary source of information that indicates William Roberts of White County, TN is the son of Reuben Roberts whereas I found plenty to indicate William Roberts of warren County, TN is the correct son of Reuben Roberts. The ETHS has asked me to write an article for their quarterly journal to document William Roberts of Warren County, TN as the son of Reuben Roberts and to use the article as a case study of why people should check and verify their sources before publishing them. Currently in progress.

Sarah Copeland Webb was the daughter of William and Mary Copeland. Her husband was Rev. Jeremiah Webb. She was the mother of twelve children.

Her obituary reads as follows:

Sister Sarah Webb, daughter of William and Mary Copeland and wife of Rev. Jeremiah Webb, was born and raised in South Carolina and emigrated to Tennessee in 1817, embraced religion and joined the Methodist Church in which she lived an acceptable and useful member more than forty years and died February 18, 1858 in White County in her sixty-fourth year. She was a subject of deep affliction for twelve months before her departure but always evinced that spirit of resignation in which grace triumphed over human weakness. Not content with a mere nominal relationship to the Church, or the experience of the past as the ground of her hope, her anxious soul longed and struggled for full redemption in the blood of Christ and she often expressed unshaken confidence in God as the medium of all spiritual bliss. She conversed freely with the members of her family about her heavenly home, often expresssing an earnest "desire to depart and be with Christ". The future happiness of her children, three or four of whom were unconverted, was a source of great anxiety and often served as a serious obstacle to the depth of her own enjoyments. But when the final summons came, she was ready and urged her friends to pray that she might be relieved from suffering. As the soul struggled to be released from the frail casket, her faith grew strong and commanding and with the words of the dying martyr on her lips "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit" she bade adieu to earth to join the sainted throng above.

Sister Webb was a good woman and "full of the faith and the Holy Ghost" . She has written her own epitaph in the hearts of those who knew her. Her Christian course and her undeviating ?__________? in every relation constitute the monuments of her mortal life, the memorials that suggest and perpetuate her virtue to those that survive her; and in following her as she followed Christ our happiness is forever sealed. I have participated in the YDNA Roberts project. #130762. The farthest back I have *proven* is to William Roberts b.1765 who married Catherine Rogers (tradition) daughter of Doswell b. 1736. It is believed that William 1765 was son of William Roberts b. ca. 1740 who married Elizabeth Wallen, daughter of Old Elisha. My William (1765) settled in Lee Co. Va. and died there as far as i know. From the petition to form Lee Co. Va, I believe that William 1740 was there also along with William 1765...

The Roberts I connect closest to dna-wise are the "Roberts Cove" Roberts of Grayson Co. Va. who supposedly descend from John Roberts b. 1733/35 from Surry Co. NC. I think its possible that John 1733/35 was a brother of William 1740...

I'm sure those Roberts of White Co. TN connect to the William Roberts of Lee Co. with such close connections to Rogers and Wallens. I have not seen the name Reuben show up in any descendants in Lee Co. DNA would sure help prove it.

THE ROBERT WEBB FAMILY

The Robert Webb family was found early in Rutherford Co., N. C. They were fromVirginia, of Irish descent. The earliest W ebb’s noted in Rutherford Co. were John and Jeremiah Webb. In 1782 Jeremiah Webb lived ¾ mile north of the land of Robert Webb.Robert Webb lived near Second Broad River and Puzzle Creek. Robert Webb was born1750-60 in Va., died Oct. 30, 1843 in Rutherford Co., N.C. and is buried at ConcordBaptist Church Cemetery. He married first ca. 1779, it is thought, to Milly Clinton. This was passed down in the family of their oldest child, Clinton Webb. (There was a Robert Clinton in Rutherford Co., who according to deeds, lived in the same area as Robert Webb. Robert Clinton died 1790 leaving a will naming only his wife Margaret.) Robert Webb married second on April 30, 1824 in Rutherford Co., N.C. to Margaret (Peggy) Roach.

Robert Webb and Millie Clinton had thirteen children:

1. Clinton Webb, born 1778 in NC, died 1862 in Milton (now Fulton) Co., Ga. Married in 1802 in Rutherford Co. N.C. to Christina Robinson, moved before 1820 to Georgia.

2. Elisha Webb, born ca 1780 in Rutherford Co., N.C. died 1845 in Dallas Co., Ala.The will of John Sorrell names daughters Malinda, wife of Elisha Webb, and Nancy,wife of Robert Webb. In 1845 four of the Webb sisters who still lived in Rutherford Co., N.C. gave power of attorney to William Mooney of Greenville, S.C. to collect their share of the estate of Elisha Webb, deceased. late of Dallas Co., Al.

3. Robert Webb, born 1782 married Nancy Sorrell.

5. Temperance (Tempy), born 1785 in Rutherford Co., N.C. died after 1860 in Spartanburg Co, S.C. married ca. 1801 to Charles Hill. Their son, Stanhope WalkerHill, married Celia Edwards, lived at Horse Cave, Macon Co., N.C. Stanhope Hill was one of the founders of Highlands, N.C. He was the first mayor of Highlands.

6. Delila Webb born 1787 in Rutherford Co., N.C. died July 1867 in Cleveland Co.,N.C. Married 1801 in N. C. To David McBrayer. Both are buried at McBrayer Cemetery, Cleveland Co., N.C. David and Delila McBrayer lived in South Carolina until 1804 then moved to Rutherford Co. They were members of the Concord Baptist Church.

7. Hetty Webb, born ca 1790 in Rutherford Co., N.C. died before 1860 in St. Clair Co.,Al. married Sept. 19, 1808 in Rutherford Co., N.C. to Richard Goode, son of Edward Goode and Mary (Polly) Turpin. Both are buried in Ashville Cemetery, St.Clair Co., Al.

8. Jeremiah Webb born Sept. 15, 1791 in Rutherford Co., N.C. died Dec. 19, 1869 in White Co., Tn. Married Jan 19, 1809 in Rutherford Co, N.C. to Sarah Copeland.Jeremiah moved by 1824 to White Co., Tn. He was a Methodist minister serving Mt. Pisgah Church in White Co.

9. Druscilla Webb born 1794 in Rutherford Co, N.C. married Aug. 24, 1819 in Rutherford Co., N.C. to Samuel Aspey.

10. Didima Webb born 1797 in Rutherford Co., N.C. died 1865 in Ringgold, WalkerCo., Ga. Married in 1815 to Joseph Weir. They moved to South Carolina where Joseph Weir died. By l850 Didima and her children were living in Walker Co., Ga.They changed the spelling of their name from Weir to Ware.

11. Alfred Webb born Sept. 1, 1800 in Rutherford Co., N. C. died Oct. 7, 1883 inDawson Co., Ga. Married Arabella Hill in 1822. Both are buried in Mt. Vernon Church Cemetery, Dawson Co., Ga. Alfred joined the Concord Baptist Church and studied for the ministry here under Elders Dobbins and Hicks. He was pastor atMountain Creek Baptist Church, Gilkey, N.C. and was a delegate in 1823 to the Broad River Association held at Reedy River Church, Greenville, SC. In 1837 Alfred and Arabella Webb moved to Georgia. Alfred helped constitute four churches in Lumpkin Co., Forsythe Co. and Cherokee Co., Ga. He was a member of the Georgia Hightower Association for over 40 years. Alfred and Arabella had nochildren.

12. James Milton Webb was born Oct. 2, 1802 in Rutherford Co., N.C. and died April 24, 1854 in Rutherford Co., N.C. married 1st. Katherine White. He married 2nd.Nancy Hampton on May 3, 1849 in Rutherford Co., N.C. He is buried in Concord Baptist Church Cemetery. James Milton Webb was a Baptist minister. He was baptized at the High Shoal Baptist Church and was pastor at Concord Baptist Church and Mountain Creek Baptist Church. James M. Webb was editor of the Rutherford Intelligencer 1842-1843, and was elected to the General Assembly when only 26 years old. George M. Webb, a son, was also a Baptist minister serving at Shelby, Cleveland Co., N.C.

13. Sarah Webb born ca. 1803 in Rutherford Co., N.C. married on November 28, 1822 in Rutherford Co., N.C. to Robert Kincaide.

15. Malinda Webb born in 1827 in Rutherford Co., N.C. death date unknown married1 st. on Jan. 7, 1842 in Rutherford Co., N.C. to Rodney Toms; married 2nd. On July22, 1845 to Jacob Shuford. Both husbands are buried at Concord Baptist Church Cemetery. Rodney Toms and Malinda Webb had one son, James Madison Toms,who was raised by the Toms family.
