Subject: [REUBENROBERTS] Anderson County, TN - Notes regarding Thomas Roberts,William Roberts, and Moses Roberts
    Date: Mon, 31 Oct 2011 15:16:47 -0400 (EDT)

Hello to my fellow Reuben Roberts Researchers -- this message board has been very quiet for some time now..........
After having spent considerable time researching the WillIam Roberts line in Warren County, TN, a few months back I began to concentrate my efforts looking into Reuben Roberts and family in Anderson County, TN (1800 - 1817). I live in Anderson County and find myself fortunate to have easier access to information than many researchers as I am closer to the courthouse and the East Tennessee Historical Society in Knoxville. One of the things I was hoping to accomplish is to identify where Reuben & family lived while in Anderson County. I am getting very close but still need to complete a few title searches before I can confirm the location.

In doing this research I have found a couple of references to members of Reuben's family and of his in-laws, the Asher/Ashurst families. These tidbits prompt me to post this message in an effort to share some of what I've found and see if others have input or comments that will benefit us all.

    I. Thomas Roberts -- In looking at some of the 1999 posts on this board there was a bit of discussion around Thomas Roberts - who he was married to, did he move on to Iowa, etc? Per exchange of notes posted in May through June 1999 from Sheryl Fischer and Ken Robertson, I'm not sure if these issues were ever clarified.

There is an Anderson County Deed dated 19 October 1830 from Thomas Roberts to Richard Andrews witnessed by Reuben Roberts and John Roberts. This was apparently done as a result Thomas leaving his wife Elizabeth and children and his subsequent move to White County (See Chapter LXIV - Private Acts Passed at the First Session of the General Assembly of the State of Tennessee, 1833. See also "Tennessee Divorces 1797 - 1858" , Taken from 750 Legislative Petitions and Acts, by Bamman and Spero. Richard Andrews was married to Martha Ashurst, daughter of John Ashurst, who was a brother of Reuben Roberts wife Milly (i.e., Martha Andrews/Ashurst was a first cousin to Thomas Roberts).

Question - Could this earlier marriage of Thomas Roberts to Elizabeth Roberts answer some of the questions raised in 1999? The divorce mentions children of the marriage - does anyone have any information on them? The last name of Elizabeth?

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

II. William Roberts - There is another Anderson County deed dated 21 September 1831 naming William Roberts and Thomas Roberts as heirs of John Ashurst to Daniel Daugherty for the land of of the estate of the recently deceased John Ashurst.
“This Indenture made the 21st day of September in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight hundred and Thirty One between William Roberts & Thomas Roberts of the Countys of Warren and also of the County of White and State of Tennessee of the one part and Daniel Daugherty of the County of Anderson and State aforesaid of the other part. Witnesseth that the said William Roberts & Thomas Roberts for and in consideration of the sum of one Dollar to them in hand paid by the said Daniel Daugherty the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged hath and by these presents doth grant bargain sell and confirm unto the said Daniel Daugherty his heirs and assigns forever the undivided part of Two several tracts of land belonging to the heirs of John Ashurst deceased. We William Roberts & Thomas Roberts being heirs of the said John Ashurst deceased at law one tract of One hundred and six acres of land being the land where the said John Ashurst deceased formerly lived {land description follows} …………”
This deed was witnessed by Joseph M. Ashurst (brother of Martha Andrews) and James Roberts. This deed is significant because it is evidence of the link between the Reuben Roberts/Milly Asher family and William Roberts of Warren County, TN. This William Roberts is named as an heir to John Ashurst (along with Thomas Roberts) and noted as being from Warren County, TN, not White County (Thomas Roberts was living in White County in 1831).

I am posting a PDF version of this deed at https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=6c96c11afadfdc92&sa=356416004#!/?cid=1012221a9857853b&sc=documents&uc=1&id=1012221A9857853B%21110.

I have updated my previous notes regarding William Roberts to reflect this information in the same site.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

III. Moses Roberts - In looking at the Anderson County deeds I find references to Moses Roberts as living very close to where Reuben was apparently living. Example, The Grantee in the 1831 deed noted above, Daniel Daughtery, is found in the 1830 Anderson County census listed with one household between him and Moses Roberts. This Ashurst land is near where Reuben & clan lived. I have seen notes on the internet (uncornfirmed) and even on this messageboard about Reuben Roberts having a brother named Moses.

Does anyone have information regarding a brother of Reuben Roberts named Moses?

    David,
It was nice to get your phone call this morning. I will try to attach some of my data for the Swindell/Swindle family of White Co TN. I will also mail you a package with my grandson's ancestor charts and a number of family group sheets for his direct lines. This will give you an idea of my current progress and let you know the families that I am working on.

I am going to list the children that I have identified as likely belonging to Benjamin Rowland (ca 1775-1857). This line up is from the census and marriage records of Warren Co TN:

    1. Lod Rowland (1804-1888) m. Mary Elizabeth Webb (1807-1862), both buried in Mt. Vernon Cem White Co TN. I assume that this is your line.
    2. James Rowland (ca 1805-1876) m. Permelia ? (ca 1807-1896), both died in Warren Co TN, burial location not identified.
    3. Unidentified Female b. ca 1809
    4. Unidentified Male b. ca 1811
    5. Malinda Rowland (1813-1900) m. James T. Clenny; buried Long Cemetery in Warren Co TN.
    6. Jud Rowland (1815-1888) m. Jossie Dean; moved to TX in 1851.
    7. Samuel Rowland (ca 1816- ? ) m. Susan ?
    8. Nancy Rowland (1817-1865) m. James Purser in 1838 in Warren Co TN. Buried in Concord Cemetery in Warren Co TN.
    9. Unidentified Female b. ca 1823.
    10. Unidentified Male b. ca 1826.
    11. Benjamin Rowland Jr. (ca 1828-1872) m. ca 1850 to Phila Ann Bright (ca 1835-aft 1880). Burial location unknown.

Do you agree/disagree with this line-up of the children? Again, thanks for the phone call. I will get a package in the mail for your information.

    Dear Rowland Researchers,

I very recently came across the data that we had all been seeking. That is a confirmation of all of the children of Benjmin Rowland (1775-1857) of Warren County TN.

It was in a publication that I had not seen until a few days ago; "Tennessee Tidbits 1778-1914" which is a three volume set of abstracted records from across Tennessee.

Volume III contained data from Warren County TN. I am attaching to this e-mail a copy of the Benjamin Rowland data which identifies his heirs. I still have some problem with some of the daughters, but this is still very good information.

I hope to return to McMinnville, TN in the near future with a goal of getting copies of the original records at the court house.

    David,

Below is a descendants chart of Joseph Couch. It was sent to me by a fellow
researcher and is said to have come from a download from World Family Tree, but
I have not been able to find it. I have emailed messages to all addresses on
this chart and they have all bounced back. I have seen both Samuel and Timothy
Couch in census of White and Warren co, TN but the only connection I have found
is the Denton name given to a grand daughter of Timothy. Let me know what you
    think.

John Chisholm was the oldest son of David and Ann Chisholm and was born about 1730 in Hanover Co. VA. His marriage to Sarah Harris produced 12 Chism children: William, Rachel, Polly, "Hickory John", Betsy, Elisha, Elijah, Gatewood, Frances, Sarah, Nancy, James. I didn't realize I mistyped the date their son William Chisholm married Ann Praytor about 1793 -- not 1703. I'm still looking for parents of Sarah Harris and of Mary Middleton, who married 1760 William Praytor in SC. Does your line connect to these family surnames? Audrey

Recently, while tracking down one of the many Johns, I ran across the following information in the records of Madison Co, AL.

Letters of Administration for the estate of one John Chisolm were issued to a Lazarus Vann on 8/16/1830. These letters were issued with the consent of the widow, Sarah. John died intestate.

Filtering thru the notes and letters, I found the heirs to be: Sarah (widow), John Chisolm Jr., William Chisolm Sr, Isham Pullen, Alfred Marrow, Andrew Burnside, and Nancy Fisher. Nancy Fisher, and John Chisum had a letter written from White Co, Tn to the judge of probate requesting that slaves Hannah (old woman) and Dolly (girl), part of the estate of John Chisolm, be sold and the proceeds of the sale be divided among the heirs.

A LeRoy Chisum, who apparently lived in Madison Co, Al attached his concurrence. (Sarah, Nancy, and LeRoy can not write). LeRoy's concurrence is dated April or Aug. 18, 1832. One William L. Chisam charged the estate 2.00 for bringing the slaves to Huntsville on 7/2/1832. Around this time, Sarah, the widow, had a letter written to the judge of probate asking that the judge provide her with the status of the settlement of the estate, stating that she had not received a single penny from the estate of her husband and that she had sent a letter to the administrator but not heard from him. She also stated that her husband had promised that she would be able to keep the slaves to "wate" on her during her old age.

Soon after the letter was received, the judge ordered the sherriff to have Mr Van bring all records of the estate to court. No mention of the disposition or fate of Mr Vann is mentioned. I recoginized this John to be "Blind John" because several years ago I had read of his daughter's troubles in applying for his Revoloutionary War Pension.

"Blind John" is listed, in most accounts, as having died in Perry Co, AL but it is apparent he died in Madison Co, AL It could be that he was a resident of Perry Co and happened to die in Madison Co. That may be why $2.00 was charged to bring the slaves to Huntsville. No records I have seen show the first names of John's son in laws, Burnside and Pullen. I think this record in Madison Co makes those name clear. Alfred Marrow may be another son in law.

The file in Madison Co, AL has the estate sale, listing all property sold and to whom. There are also several slips of paper where Mr Vann made charges to the estate for "services" and one page which was faded and unreadable.

There was no charge for transportation of the body so I assume John was buried in Madison Co or someone transported his body free of charge to "wherever". There is a charge of $2.00 for a casket.

Hope this is helpful to you "Blind John" folks. BTW the spelling of the name Chisolm is all over the lot. Chisolm,Chisum,Chism,Chisam, etc. Seems that none could read or write.

I have a tree at ancestry.com. Here is the link:

My Grandmother was Clara Emmalynn Chisam from her you can follow the Chisam line to Overton (and his brothers) and beyond. As you will see in the tree,Overton, John and Preston Chisam (all brothers) married the three Hash sisters Celia, Matilda and Cynthia respectively.

I have been told by other researchers that at the time the two families properties were adjacent to each other.

There has been some controversy over the lineage of John “Blind John” Chisholm. Some say he descended from David and Adam Chisholm but that is another John Chisholm. There were so many John Chisholm’s that it is easy to muddle the lines. I’m certain of my research with Richard Cheesome (various spellings) being the patriarch of my clan lineage.

If for any reason this doesn’t give you the information you seek then let me know.

I have seen the sight you referenced and it looks like an old email of mine is with Mary Elizabeth Spencer. My Hennessee/Spencer line is also detailed in my tree with Mary Spencer marrying James Walker (in Georgia) and I have lots of other Walkers as well.

Happy New Year to you too!

It is a small world. If I can't find my ancestors in the normal way, I tend to go up and see if there is a downward connection. In my family notes I had written:

"I haven’t been able to prove the parents of Sarah. A number of years ago, another researcher reported her as the daughter of James and Sarah Harris of St. Martin’s Parish, Virginia.
27 April 1766 James and Sarah Harris of St. Martin's Parish, Louisa County, Virginia [formerly Hanover County] lived on a branch of Long Creek beside Waddy, Pope, Marks, Jones and Sharp – selling this property 11 August 1766 [Louisa County Deeds 1759-1774 by Davis]

One line that has been well researched from immigrants Capt. Thomas and Adria Harris was through their son Robert Harris who married Mary Clairborn; and their grandson William and Temperance Harris. William and Temperance Harris had children: Benjamin, Robert, William, Jr., John, James and Jemima. Several members of this family are found in the records of the Hanover County area."

I'm trying to prove or disprove my Samuel Howell, whose sons, David and Reece, settled in Lincoln County, TN is the same man as the Rev. Samuel Howell.

If I find a good lead, will let you know.

For details concerning Robert Rowland of Botetourt Co., VA, including his will naming George as son, see Joanne Kartak's web page at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~qvarizona/rowland.html . It is well documented and researched.

David Johnson has compiled an excellent, academic history of the ROWLAND family.

    Biography

ROBERT ROWLAND was born ca. 1716 in Britain or PA unverified1, and died 19 Jan 1782 in Botetourt Co. VA. He married Martha (?) Looney Bet. 1735 - 1739, who according to unproven tradition, was the daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Looney. Martha was born ca. 1718, probably in Ireland (?), and died between 1763-1769 in Augusta Co. VA5. Martha's name is almost always written with this (?) following her surname. It is known that the Rowlands had close ties to the Looney family and were neighbors in Virginia. Martha is not mentioned in her husband's will.

The exact year Robert and Martha arrived in Virginia is unknown. According to family bible records, their youngest son was born in December of 1741 in Augusta County, and the earliest known mention of Robert in the area as a member of the Augusta County Militia in 1742 under George Robinson. Many of the other men named in this militia are also in the early records of Lancaster and Chester Counties in Pennsylvania in the early 1700's,

A Seed-bed of the Republic: Early Botetourt County, by Robert Douthat Stoner, (1962)(pg. 19) Robert Looney owned several tracts of land, amounting to 863 acres, in 1742, on Looney's Mill Creek, which was named for him. Robert Looney had been granted lands at this River Crossing in 1742. The river crossing was known as Looney's Ferry. . . . (pg. 430) The Rowlands . . . settled south of the James on the waters of Looney's Creek and the Spreading Spring Branch as early as 1750".

The Rowlands became owners of large parcels of land in Virginia and Kentucky, and they seem to have been busy acquiring and disposing of land on a regular basis.
