10.Drury2 Simmons (James Seamons/1) was born 1806 in South Carolina, and died Bet. 1851 - 1898 in Van Buren Co., Tennessee. He married (1) Tabitha (Rutha) Sparkman23 Bef. 1843, daughter of George Sparkman and Martha Bryant. She was born 1810 in Grainger Co, Tenn, and died Unknown. He married (2) Tabitha or Rutha Adair Abt. 1856.She was born Bet. 1800 - 1830, and died Unknown.

    Notes for Drury Simmons:
The 1850 Census of White County Tennessee gives the following family of Drury Simmons & Rutha (not Tabitha) who was possibly Rutha Sparkman.

    Dwelling #419
DRURY SIMMONS age 44 Farmer $300 property born in S. C.
RUTHA (SPARKMAN?) age 40 born in Tennessee
William Simmons age 20 born in Tennessee
James Simmons age 18 born in Tennessee
Nancy Simmons age 17 born in Tennessee
Solomon Simmons age 15 born in Tennessee
Francis Simmons age 13 born in Tennessee
Zacariah Simmons age 10 born in Tennessee
Joseph Simmons age 8 born in Tennessee
Martha Simmons age 6 born in Tennessee
Stacy Simmons age 4 born in Tennessee
Fineas Simmons age 1 born in Tennessee

The above data would indicate that Drury Simmons was born in 1796 not 1806 as stated on the family group sheet and would make (Tabitha) Rutha born in 1810, and we know that Rutha who was married to Abner Ray was born in 1789.From this census record the children of Drury Simmons born 1806 are correct however his wife and these children's mother was not Rutha-perhaps the census taker was a little hard of hearing and misunderstood that Drury's wife was Tabitha Sparkman, not Rutha.Or even more likely is the possibility that Tabitha was already deceased, and Rutha, who would have been Tabitha's sister was just residing with Drury for a short while, although her name should be Rutha Sparkman Ray, not just Rutha Sparkman.

The above theory is repudiated in that the 1860 White Co., Tennessee gives the family of Drury Simmons as follows, and as you can see his wife is listed as Tabitha, not Rutha as it was in the 1850 census.

    Drury Simmons age 55
    Tabitha Simmons age 50
James Simmons age 28 and judged to be insane
    Solomon Simmons age 23
    Francis Simmons age 21
    Zechariah Simmons age 19
    Joseph Simmons age 16
    Martha Simmons age 14
    Stacy Simmons age 12
    Finis Simmons age 10

Note William and Nancy who were also children of Drury are not enumerated in the same household in 1860.The reason is that they were probably married and living in their own homes.

The Simmons and Adair families lived near each other in White County, Tennessee in 1860 and of course they were good friends, some of the descendants of these two families intermarried with each others families as well as the Sparkman family.

    Notes for Pleasant Adair:
In the 1850 White Co., Tennessee Pleasant was living with his father. In the 1860 White Co., Tennessee cenus the family of Pleasant is family #472, and on 22 June 1860 the census report indicates that Plesant Adair is 31 years of age, a blacksmith, and was born in Tennessee. His wife Nancy is 25 years of age.Children listed along with Pleasant and Nancy are William age 7, Marion age 4, and Sarah age 2.Pleasant and Nancy were not married until 26 May 1858 so it is quite probably that William and Marion are the children of his first wife Mary R. Early, whom he married on August 17th, 1850.

    ****************************************************************
    Information from James Earles:
"Not sure what additional information you are looking for but the following is some of what I have written on the William Earle branch of the family:

My information indicates William Earle was the oldest son of Gamaliel & Martha Earle and was born about 1740, a few years after Gamaliel immigrated to Brunswick County in the Virginia Colony. The surname was clearly Earle upon arrival from England but is most often recorded as Earles or Earls and sometimes as Earl, Erle, Erls, Yearl, & Yearls. In the early 1740's the family moved across the Roanoke River to Granville County, NC but lived very near the boarder and over the years family members also owned land &, at various times, lived on the Virginia side.

William shows up on the Granville County, NC 1762 tax record as living with Gamaliel and, after the Bute County split from Granville in 1764, shows up on the 1766 & 1771 Bute county tax lists. He purchased 100 acres 13 Feb 1772 and was assigned 40 acres from Gamaliel 19 Aug 1772. On 12 Nov 1777 he sold the 100 acres and in Feb 1778 is one of those listed as taking the State Allegiance oath. William most likely was in the local Militia during the Revolutionary War but nothing has yet been found to indicate he served with an active military unit.

On 16 Mar 1778 William is listed as having land on both sides of Callier's road adjacent to the Granville County line. In 1779 Bute County became Warren County and William Earles is listed on the 1779 & 1781 tax lists. The 1781 tax list indicates William has left the county and in 1782 a William Earles pays taxes on 250 acres in Montgomery County, NC. The supposition that this is the same William is strengthened by Frederick, a younger son of Gamaliel, marrying in 1785 and immediately moving to Montgomery County where he shows up on the 786 census. In 1790 William is counted on the Montgomery County Salisbury District census but Frederick had moved to Rutherford County and is counted in the sixth company of the Morgan District. The connection between William & Frederick is further strengthened by the 1790 Rutherford County census showing John Roberts & Robert Harden living adjacent to Frederick, both of whom were witnesses to the William Earle 1803 Will.

It appears William had moved to near Frederick in Rutherford County by 1792 because 3 of his children (William Jr., Priscilla, & Bennet) married in 1792 & 1793 to families that were living in Rutherford County. Rutherford County land entry records for Jan & Mar 1796 show 300 acres were granted to William Earle "on a branch at the head of Hickory Creek on waters of the First Broad River." His 1803 Will says the homestead "begins at the Sholley Branch & runs up his Spring Branch," and he bequeathed 100 acres to each of his three youngest sons (Pleasant, Nathan, & Elijah).

Lincoln County records show William Jr. purchased land in the lower first Broad River basin on the waters of
Buffalo Creek. The 1800 census counts William, third son Joshua, & daughter Priscilla (Ledbetter) in Rutherford County and William Jr. & Bennet in Lincoln County.

William Earle died in Jan 1803 and his undated Will names six sons (William Jr., Bennet, Joshua, Pleasant,
Nathan & Elijah), three daughters (Priscilla, Lucy, & Margaret) & wife Elizabeth. Census data indicate there was a fourth daughter who died about 1802 and court records show Elijah died before April 1803. William left the 100 acre Rutherford County home farm (beginning at the Sholley Branch and running up Spring Branch) to Nathan and his other 200 acres to Pleasant & Elijah. William Jr., Bennet, & Joshua were left 10 shillings each. Elizabeth remarried in 1805 and an 1807 court record indicates Lucy had died by that date and the remaining 8 children (6 sons + Priscilla Ledbetter & Margaret Hardin) & Elizabeth sold 100 acres (probably the parcel left to Elijah) to Charles Love in Jan 1807.

    Notes:

    Notes for GAMALIEL EARLE:
From Jim Earles, per Joe W. Stout:
Gamaliel immigrated to Brunswick County in the Virginia Colony from England. In the early 1740's the family moved across the Roanoke River to Granville County, NC but lived very near the border and over the years family members also owned land &, at various times, lived on the Virginia side.

The surname was clearly Earle upon arrival from England but is most often recorded as Earles or Earls and sometimes as Earl, Erle, Erls, Url, Urls, Yearl, & Yearls. For example, Warren County records for the 1782 marriage of Obediah & Joyce Cunningham show the name as Urls.

    ****************************************************************************
Gamaliel Earle was likely born in England, migrating to the Virginia Colony about 1735, either shortly before or just after he married Martha. This supposition is based on his living near a John Earle who also arrived about 1735 and settled in Brunswick County, VA, on the north side of the Roanoke River.

John Earle emigrated from England, settled in Virginia, made a crop of tobacco, then sent back to England for his fiancee, Mary Elizabeth Watts (a niece of Sir Isaac Watts), and boarded the ship to marry her before she disembarked. Records show John Earle was a tobacco planter on Allen's Creek where it joins the Roanoke River in what is now Mecklenburge County, VA, just across the river from where Gamaliel and Martha were living at that time. Following deaths of John & Mary, their son, John Earl, moved his wife Agness and three children across the Roanoke to Granville County in 1765 and located less than 15 miles southwest of where Gamaliel was living.

The spelling of the name was Earle when they first arrived from England, but numerous clerks came up with spellings ranging from Earle to Eril, Erle, Earls, Erls, Urls, Yearls, and Early. Various branches of the family wound up with different spellings.

There are traditions in a number of families who descend from Gamaliel stating there is a relationship with the John Earle family of Somerset, England, that immigrated to what is now Westmoreland County, VA, in the early 1640's. One researcher has traced that family back to Lord of Erleigh in Berkshire in the year 1000. The Westmoreland Co. John Earle family is well documented and Gamaliel does not appear to be a direct descendant. However, there likely is a relationship, although it may be a few generations back. By the 16th Century there were a large number of Earle families in the Southern England Counties of Surry, Sussex, Hampshire, Wiltshire, Dorset, and Somerset.

    *******************************************************************************

Gamaliel & Martha lived in Granville County, NC, near the Virginia border. They lived in the Fishing Creek District in 1749, and William Eaton's 1759 Will mentions Gamaliel Earles living on his land. Gamaliel and his sons were tobacco planters; and on 15 May 1761 he purchased 493 acres located on both sides of Ready Branch of Smith Creek in Granville County. He sold the same parcel on 23 February 1762. Gamaliel and his son, William, are listed in the1762 Smith Creek District tax record list and Gamaliel is identified as insolvent (most likely because he had sold the land being taxed). Gamaliel paid Granville County taxes in 1769 & 1771, and on 07 Jan 1772 paid for 40 ac in Bute County on the West side of Henderson's Swamp Creek. On 19 Aug 1772, that deed was assigned to Williams Earles. Gamaliel purchased wedges at an estate auction 11 Jan 1773, but he is not on later tax lists and probably died before 1775. Martha is not listed on the 1762 land sale deed, but that apparently was
not a requirement in North Carolina. However, she may have died before 1770.

As noted above, William Earles was living with Gamaliel Earle in 1762 & in 1772 Gamaliel assigned the Bute County land to him. William later assigned that land to Obediah Earls, who sold the 40 acres on 22 Dec 1792. William Earl paid Bute County Taxes in 1766, bought 100 acres in 1772 and sold that land in 1777. He paid Warren County taxes in 1779 & 1781. In 1781, he is listed as owing 136 shillings with 100 shillings to be allowed for insolvent mistakes, (which means he probably moved before the 1791 tax date). William Earles paid taxes in Montgomery County, NC, in 1782 and was on the 1790 census list for that county. In 1800 he was on the Rutherford County census list and in 1803 his Will was probated in Rutherford County.

Granville, Bute, & Warren counties NC, and Mecklenburg Co., VA, real estate, tax, census, and marriage records also list Thomas, Elisha, James,
